Hello community, this is my first post over here. Last Wednesday in the complete silence of my classroom, I started reflecting about the importance of a strategy that is effective in teaching any discipline or technique of visual arts, focusing mainly on what I teach, which is graphic arts, or engraving how is commonly known.
Hola comunidad, esta es mi primera publicación por acá. El miércoles en el silencio de mi aula de clase, me puse reflexionar sobre la importancia de una estrategia efectiva en la enseñanza de cualquier disciplina o técnica de las artes visuales, enfocándome principalmente en la que yo dicto, que es artes gráficas, o como se conoce comúnmente grabado.
This being a lesser known technique, (in fact in the school I work as a professor it is a senior year lecture and only lasts one course, as opposed to drawing and sculpting that are studied during that four years of the career), I'm going to explain a little bit of what the engraving technique is about.
Ya que esta técnica es poco conocida, (de hecho en la institución donde imparto clases se da en el último año y se estudia nada más un año a diferencia de dibujo, pintura y escultura que si se estudian los cuatro año de carrera), que les voy a explicar un poco en que consiste la técnica del grabado.
It is a printing technique that consists on drawing an image over a rigid surface called matrix, leaving an imprint that's going to hold the ink and will be transferred by pressure to another surface as paper or fabric, obtaining several reproductions of the same print.
Es una técnica de impresión que consiste en dibujar una imagen sobre una superficie rígida llamada matriz, dejando una huella que después alojará tinta y será transferida por presión a otra superficie como papel o tela, obteniendo varias reproducciones de la estampa.
After making the concept known, is to say the next phrase "engraving is not drawing, and is not painting", despite needing some drawing knowledge, and color, but according tommy own experience it is not an impediment. Because I have had students that, without any knowledge on drawing or painting, and have made a very good graphic work.
Lo siguiente que hago después de darles a conocer el concepto, es decirles la siguiente frase “el grabado no es dibujo, y no es pintura”, a pesar de que debes tener conocimientos de dibujo, y color, pero según mi experiencia no es para nada limitante. Ya que he tenido estudiantes que, no han tenido ningún conocimiento de dibujo o pintura, y han realizado un buen trabajo gráfico.
After explaining the technique, I teach them about each tool and material. And we start developing the sketches of the first technique, that I consider less complicated, so we start moving onto different techniques, according to the difficulty level. On this phase motivation is key because every process of engraving are quite meticulous and detailed, they need concentration and patience, and despite using oil based inks the work needs to be impecable, it is a contradictory process. And all needs to be understood, analyzed, reflected on, and internalized to have a satisfactory outcome on graphic arts.
Después de explicar en qué consiste la técnica, les doy a conocer todas las herramientas y materiales. Y empezamos desarrollando los bocetos de la primera técnica, que yo considero es la que posee menos dificultad, así avanzamos con las diferentes técnicas, en función del nivel de dificultad. En esta etapa la motivación juega un papel muy importante ya que los procesos del grabado son muy minuciosos y detallados, hay que tener mucha concentración y paciencia, y a pesar de que se usan tintas a base de aceite el trabajo debe quedar impecable, es un proceso muy contradictorio. Y todo esto es lo que los estudiantes deben comprender, analizar, reflexionar, e internalizar para lograr un desempeño y resultado satisfactorio en las artes gráficas.
I believe that as a professor this strategy has been working for me, because in my class are many graduated students that are still coming to my lectures to keep on developing their graphic work. On next posts I will be talking about each one of the engraving techniques . So everybody gets to know a little more of my passion.
Actualmente creo que como docente esta estrategia me ha funcionado, ya que en mi clase se encuentran muchos estudiantes egresados que continua asistiendo a mi clase para seguir desarrollando su trabajo gráfico. En próximas publicaciones desarrollare cada una de las técnicas del grabado. Para que todos conozcan un poco más de lo que me apasiona.
