Art Talk: Harvard Art Museum

in Art Talk8 months ago (edited)

Continuing my theme of museums this year.

While exploring Harvard campus Whitley and I discovered the Harvard Art Museum. Wow what a great museum. It was rainy out so a lot of other people found refuge in the art museum too.

Here are the highlights

Ancient Greece and Roman

Since I am starting my Art certificate program in October (Ancient to Renaissance) we went to the Greek and Roman section.

Head of a Male Votary First half of 6th century, GreeceWater Jar: Dionysos and Entourage, 400 BCE, GreekYouthful Hero or God, 1st-2nd century CE, Roman

Sarcophagus Sections with Men Fighting Amazons

Early Christian

The next unit in my class is early Christian so that was nice to see some pieces, glass, wood, and oil.

Scene from the Life of Thomas Becket, 1190-1205Female Figure, early 12th centuryAdoration of the Magi, 1520

A gorgeous six panel folding screen called Crows and Egrets, Japan 1900-1903.

It was amazing to see paintings by artist I know well that I had never seen before. Could you name the artists? 1-7

John Singer Sargent

This trip had a lot of John Singer Sargent, at the Isabella Stewart Gardener, The Boston Public Library and here at the Harvard Art Museum

Sargent was born, died and lived abroad most of his life. His family was from Massachusetts so it makes sense he would visit and work in Boston!

The Building

This museum on Harvard's campus was a delightful surprise and I would recommend it to those visiting Harvard.

Looks like an impressively diverse collection; I suppose university collections with huge endowments often are. Lovely looking space, too... so light even on a rainy day. Thanks for the share!

Yes, I did enjoy the light in the museum, it was nice in the rooms too. Whitley and I sat and talked and watched the rain fall.
