In the distance is Plum Island, where animal pathology research started there in 1954.
United States Department of Homeland Security (DHS) assumed ownership of the island and all its facilities in 2003. The facility was closed in 2008/

It was to be sold privately but that was changed when the local people protested. It is now designated to be taken over and preserved by a Federal agency. If no agency wants to manage it then it will be offered to The state or local Governments to manage and preserve.
