You probably get about as much sun as we do. Germany was way ahead of the UK on alternative energy when I lived there. Our house was designed to benefit from solar gain in terms of warming it up. We have south-facing windows that make it feel warmer on days like this. You would think that all homes would have that as a consideration, but people can be very traditional in what they want.

We started with solar panels in the old house - hardly needed heating - the new house needs more energy and we can not add more panels right now
Heating is a major cost, so anything to reduce that ought to be good. Maybe we will get a heat pump eventually.
