Today I present to you an Old and Forgotten River that I met 40 years ago, with 3 km of course that rises from the Neverí River in Barcelona, capital of the state of Anzoátegui in Venezuela, and flows into the Bay of Barcelona in Lechería, called Río Viejo.
Hoy les presento a un Viejo y Olvidado Río que conocí hace 40 años, con 3 km de recorrido que nace del Río Neverí en Barcelona, capital del estado Anzoátegui en Venezuela y desemboca en la Bahía de Barcelona en Lechería, llamado Río Viejo.

In the image taken from Google Maps on Sunday, November 28, 2021, we can appreciate the current route of the Río viejo.

At the end of the '80s, it was impressive to see how blue crabs or crabs walked freely along the riverbanks, observe a diversity of birds that delighted with their singing, being a spectacle, including herons and corocoras were also easily and frequently sighted. In great measure, due to the mangroves and the abundant vegetation that accompanied the river in its course.

By the year 2007, I returned to this area, there were substantial changes, avenues, many houses, and by 2013 they installed a mobile electrical substation a few meters from the river, as well as electrical distribution towers forming part of the current urban landscape for those of us who pass through there.
Para el año 2007 regresé a esta zona, había cambios sustanciales, avenidas, muchas viviendas, y para el 2013 instalaron una subestación eléctrica móvil a pocos metros del río, así como torres de distribución eléctrica formando parte del actual paisaje urbano para quienes transitamos por allí.
In addition to this, unfortunately, sewage from two municipalities flows into it, which has contaminated it. Many mangroves succumbed for this reason, and others were cut down by the development of the avenue and nearby constructions.
Sumado a esto, lamentablemente desembocan en él aguas servidas de dos municipios, que lo han contaminado. Muchos manglares sucumbieron por esta razón, y otros fueron cortados por el desarrollo de la avenida y construcciones aledañas.
This area is conducive to biodiversity and has not been appreciated as such, being subjected to neglect and mistreatment, the evidence is clear. However, there are neighbors who continue to raise their voices. Reason for this, I make reference to one written by the Chronicler of Lechería, Historian Maximilian Kopp M. where he highlights its importance, Río Viejo: Un Patrimonio Natural Esencial de Lechería y Anzoategui
Esta zona es propicia para la biodiversidad y no sido apreciada como tal, siendo sometida al olvido y maltrato, las pruebas son evidentes. Sin embargo, hay vecinos que siguen levantando su voz. Razón por el cual, hago referencia a uno escrito por el Cronista de Lechería, Historiador Maximilian Kopp M. donde resalta su importancia, Río Viejo: Un Patrimonio Natural Esencial de Lechería y Anzoategui.
At the end of 2020, as it happened in the world, several species of birds began to be visible, and in the trees, they danced. By the time I am writing, those songs of various bird species that we used to hear and see, have already diminished and others have appeared, such as the Macaws.
A finales del 2020, como sucedió en el mundo, varias especies de aves empezaron a ser visibles, y en los árboles danzaban. Para el momento que escribo, esos cantos de variadas especies de aves que solíamos escuchar y ver, ya ha mermado y han aparecido otras como las Guacamayas.
In spite of everything, Rio Viejo continues to give its fruits that we continue to appreciate, with the birds and their songs. The crabs and corocoras are no longer seen and, sporadically, a solitary heron comes to visit it, struggling through the pollution looking for something to feed on.
Pese a todo, Rio Viejo sigue dando sus frutos que seguimos apreciamos, con las aves y sus cantos. Ya, los cangrejos y corocoras no se ven y, esporádicamente pasan a visitarlo una garza solitaria que lucha entre la contaminación buscando algo de que alimentarse.
While it is true, normal and usual is to find this wonder of nature, because it is in an area facing the Caribbean Sea very close to the mouth of the Neverí River and should be protected, that protected nothing at all, this friendly Río Viejo continues to give life.
Si bien es cierto, normal y habitual es encontrarse con esta maravilla de la naturaleza, porque está en una zona frente al Mar Caribe muy cerca de la desembocadura del Río Neverí y debería estar protegida, que de protegida nada de nada, este amable Río Viejo sigue dando vida.
The Old is still there, battling against its aggressors and still fulfilling its function of harboring species of flora and fauna
El Viejo todavía está allí, batallando contra sus agresores y sigue cumpliendo su función de albergar especies de flora y fauna.

Una triste y lamentable verda que dia a dia esta ante nuestros ojos ante la mirada indolente de las autoridades y quienes pueden contribuir a que esto no siga sucediendo, espero al igual que tu que la humanidad reflexione sobre el daño que se le esta haciendo a nuestra naturaleza y al planeta en general lo mas pronto posible.

Hola @janettyanez gracias por estar a tono con lo que expuse. Cada vez que caminaba me encontraba destrucción, pero es increíble como la misma naturaleza se abre espacio, a pesar del maltrato y hace presencia y puede ofrecernos maravillas. Gracias
Hola @alfonsoalfonsi, importante reflexión que presentas del impacto del crecimiento urbanistico y actividades del hombre, sin considerar la debida protección de la naturaleza.
A pesar del deterioro esta zona es parte de la biodiverdad en la ciudad, y pocas veces es mostrada su situación actual.
Buen tema para los amantes de la naturaleza, apreciar la belleza en todas sus expresiones y condiciones.

Gracias, gracias @raizayanez por leer mi post y comentarlo. El impacto que se hace en dirección al ambiente es cada vez mas duro. Este espacio, debería estar protegido y no dejar que siga la explotación de sus adyacencias. Las fotos que ofrezco fueron tomadas en el recorrido del río, son reales y pueden contar historias. Gracias.
