No saben, lo contenta que estoy con lo que les traigo hoy, producto del fruto de mi investigación, después de una ardua labor logre identificar la planta que hoy compartiré con ustedes. La encontré en un vivero y al verla me fascino, por supuesto, no pude dejar de fotografiarla, aunque, debo reconocer que no todas las fotos me quedaron tan lindas como me hubiese gustado, pero, resulto un objetivo difícil de capturar. Pensé que recabar información sobre ella sería un trabajo fácil, porque en la maceta supuestamente tenía su nombre. Pues resulto, que no, porque el nombre estaba errado, y ni modo, ya mi curiosidad se había despertado, así que inicié mi búsqueda.

You do not know how happy I am with what I bring you today, product of the fruit of my research, after a hard work I managed to identify the plant that today I will share with you. I found it in a nursery and when I saw it I was fascinated, of course, I could not stop photographing it, although, I must admit that not all the photos were as nice as I would have liked, but, it was a difficult target to capture. I thought that gathering information about it would be an easy job, because it supposedly had its name on the pot. As it turned out, it didn't, because the name was wrong, and no way, my curiosity had been aroused, so I started my search.

Me tomo muchas horas de trabajo infructuoso, sin poder encontrar nada, ya estaba dispuesta a abandonar la investigación, cansada de saltar de página en página, sin resultado alguno. Cuando al fin, sucedió lo que esperaba… encontré imágenes de una planta igual a la de mis fotografías. Resulta, que la esquiva planta la llaman Penta, Estrellita de Jardín o Estrella Egipcia, bueno, al menos, esa es la forma más popular con la que se conoce. A partir de allí, como generalmente ocurre, se abrió la puesta para encontrar suficiente información, la cual trataré de resumirles en los siguientes párrafos.

It took me many hours of fruitless work, without being able to find anything, I was ready to give up the research, tired of jumping from page to page, without any result. When finally, what I expected happened... I found images of a plant just like the one in my photographs. Turns out, the elusive plant is called Penta, Garden Star or Egyptian Star, well, at least, that's the most popular way it's known. From there, as is usually the case, it was open season to find enough information, which I will try to summarize for you in the following paragraphs.

Empezaremos por el nombre científico de esta planta, originaria del Oriente Africano, Yemen y Arabia. En el ámbito de la botánica, se le conoce a esta especie como Pentas Lanceolata, pertenece a la familia de las Rubiáceas, y al género de Pentas. Ahora bien, presenta una apariencia redondeada y es lo que se conoce, como un arbusto herbáceo de follaje perenne. Por otro lado, su tallo es vertical pudiendo llegar a medir hasta poco menos de 2 metros de altura y casi 1 metro de ancho.

We will begin with the scientific name of this plant, native of the African East, Yemen and Arabia. In the field of botany, this species is known as Pentas Lanceolata, it belongs to the Rubiaceae family, and to the genus of Pentas. Now, it has a rounded appearance and is what is known as an herbaceous shrub with evergreen foliage. On the other hand, its stem is vertical and can reach a little less than 2 meters high and almost 1 meter wide.

Es una planta de follaje denso, muy apreciada en el ámbito de la jardinería por su valor ornamental, además, aunque parece delicada resulta que es una especie muy vigorosa y resiste. En climas cálidos o templados, con cuidados muy básicos, un adecuado riego y recibiendo luz solar directa, normalmente florece abundantemente, casi todo el año. Por otro lado, aunque esta planta adora estar a pleno sol, también es posible mantenerla en condiciones de sombra parcial, pero, se debe estar consciente, que sus flores disminuirán en términos de cantidad e intensidad de color.

It is a plant with dense foliage, highly appreciated in the field of gardening for its ornamental value, in addition, although it seems delicate, it is a very vigorous and resistant species. In warm or temperate climates, with very basic care, adequate watering and receiving direct sunlight, it usually blooms abundantly, almost all year round. On the other hand, although this plant loves full sun, it is also possible to keep it in partial shade conditions, but be aware that its flowers will decrease in terms of quantity and color intensity.

En lo que respecta a su follaje, ya les adelanté, que es denso y tiende a tomar una forma entre ovalada o lanceolada. Por otro lado, sus grandes hojas, pueden llegar a medir 15 cm y se distribuyen a lo largo de los tallos, ubicándose una frente a la otra en pares. Poseen un llamativo color verde oscuro, y su forma se asemejan a una especie de puntas de lanzas. Como dato curioso el revés de sus hojas y los tallos tiernos son pubescente, o lo que es lo mismo, están recubiertas de unos pequeños vellitos.

Regarding its foliage, I have already told you that it is dense and tends to take an oval or lanceolate shape. On the other hand, its large leaves can measure up to 15 cm and are distributed along the stems, located one in front of the other in pairs. They have a striking dark green color, and its shape resembles a kind of spearheads. As a curious fact the back of its leaves and tender stems are pubescent, or what is the same, are covered with small hairs.

Quizás el aspecto más llamativo de esta planta, son sus maravillosos racimos que emergen de forma erecta sobresaliendo y contrastando primorosamente sus brillantes colores sobre verde follaje. Los ramilletes agrupan delicadas flores hermafroditas de forma acampanada, con cinco pétalos puntiagudos, que asemejan diminutas estrellas, de allí, precisamente deriva sus nombres más populares Estrella Egipcia y Estrellita de Jardín. Comúnmente las encontramos en tonalidades desde el blanco, rosado, lila, fucsia, carmesí, rojo, hasta incluso purpura y como pueden ver en mis imágenes, su centro normalmente posee otro tono más claro. Para finalizar, un dato muy interesante sobre la Pentas lanceolata, es que resulta que es una planta melífera, cuyo néctar atrae a las mariposas, abejas y colibríes. Así que, si los quieres frecuentemente de visita en tu jardín, solo debes plantar esta hermosa especie.

Perhaps the most striking aspect of this plant are its marvelous clusters that emerge erect, standing out and contrasting beautifully with their bright colors on green foliage. The clusters group delicate bell-shaped hermaphrodite flowers, with five pointed petals, which resemble tiny stars, hence, precisely derives its most popular names Egyptian Star and Garden Star. They are commonly found in shades ranging from white, pink, lilac, fuchsia, crimson, red, and even purple, and as you can see in my images, their center usually has a lighter shade. Finally, a very interesting fact about Pentas lanceolata is that it happens to be a melliferous plant, whose nectar attracts butterflies, bees and hummingbirds. So, if you want them to visit your garden frequently, just plant this beautiful species.
