Saludos a todos mis queridos lectores y apasionados por los regalos que nos da a diario la naturaleza. En esta ocasión vengo a compartir con ustedes imágenes e información de una planta realmente hermosa, pero, a la vez, como ya deben haber leído en el título de esta publicación, también es un poco peligrosa, ya que, es venenosa. Todas sus partes poseen un alto nivel de toxicidad, es más, a nivel mundial se encuentra catalogada como la planta más venenosa, pudiendo llegar a causar la muerte del humano o animal que la consuma.
Greetings to all my dear readers and lovers of the gifts that nature gives us every day. This time I come to share with your images and information of a really beautiful plant, but, at the same time, as you may have read in the title of this publication, it is also a bit dangerous, since it is poisonous. All its parts have a high level of toxicity, moreover, worldwide it is ranked as the most poisonous plant, and can even cause the death of humans or animals that consume it.
Aquí en Venezuela la conocemos de forma popular como Flor de la Reina, sin embargo, no es el único nombre con el que se le identifica en el argot popular, a este arbusto perteneciente a la familia de las Apocunaceae y al género Nerium. Adelfa, Berbería, Baladre, Rosa Laurel, Laurel de Campo o de Jardín, Laurel romano, Falsa Rosa, Narciso, Rosa de Berbería y Yerba Mala, son otros de los nombres con los que se le suele nombrar a esta hermosa planta.
Here in Venezuela we know it popularly as Flor de la Reina, however, it is not the only name by which it is identified in the popular jargon, to this shrub belonging to the family of the Apocunaceae and to the genus Nerium. Oleander, Barbary, Baladre, Laurel Rose, Laurel Field or Garden Laurel, Roman Laurel, False Rose, Narcissus, Barbary Rose and Yerba Mala, are other names with which this beautiful plant is usually called.
En el ámbito científico se le conoce formalmente como Nerium Oleander, nombre genérico con el que se le identifica a la especie. Sin embargo, existes en la actualidad diversas variedades de esta especie, entre las cuales se encuentra la que hoy tengo el placer de mostrarles y que específicamente lleva por nombre Nerium oleander Splendens.
In the scientific field it is formally known as Nerium Oleander, generic name with which the species is identified. However, there are currently several varieties of this species, among which is the one I have the pleasure of showing you today, specifically named Nerium oleander Splendens.
Algo que quizás pueda resultar intrigante, es la razón de la popularidad del uso de este arbusto para ambientar espacios públicos e incluso jardines particulares, tomando en cuenta, el peligro que representa debido a su toxicidad. Bueno, primeramente, juega mucho a su favor el aspecto general de la planta, además, posee bellísimos y vistosos ramilletes de flores y si a esto le agregamos, una floración realmente abundante, este arbusto resulta ser un verdadero espectáculo visual. Además, el desagradable sabor amargo que posee, no la hace ser nada atractiva para ser ingerida por la mayoría de los animales, y mucho menos por los humanos, por lo que, no es muy común que se den casos de intoxicación.
Something that may be intriguing is the reason for the popularity of the use of this shrub to decorate public spaces and even private gardens, taking into account the danger it represents due to its toxicity. Well, first of all, the general appearance of the plant plays in its favor, in addition, it has beautiful and showy flower clusters and if we add to this, a really abundant flowering, this shrub turns out to be a real visual spectacle. In addition, the unpleasant bitter taste that it has, does not make it attractive to be ingested by most animals, much less by humans, so it is not very common that cases of poisoning occur.
Pero ahora hablemos más al detalle sobre las características generales de este hermoso arbusto de origen europeo alcanzando incluso el medio oriente. Sin embargo, su gran atractivo a nivel ornamental y su relativa facilidad de cultivo y mantenimiento le ha permitido extender su hábitat a prácticamente todo el mundo. Es un árbol que se adapta fácilmente a diversas condiciones ambientales, la podemos ver a la sombra o expuestas a pleno sol, ya que, soporta bastante bien la sequía y el calor intenso. Aunque, realmente se desarrolla mejor en condiciones intermedias, solo que los espacios se encuentren bien iluminados, porque, esto favorece su proceso de floración.
But now let's talk more in detail about the general characteristics of this beautiful shrub of European origin reaching even the Middle East. However, its great ornamental attractiveness and its relative ease of cultivation and maintenance has allowed it to extend its habitat to practically all over the world. It is a tree that adapts easily to diverse environmental conditions, we can see it in the shade or exposed to full sun, since, it supports quite well the drought and the intense heat. Although, it really develops better in intermediate conditions, only that the spaces are well illuminated, because, this favors its flowering process.
El arbusto de Flor de la Reina o Adelfa se caracteriza por poseer una ramificación muy tupida con un elegante y abundante follaje. Por otro lado, su crecimiento es rápido y llegando a alcanzar una altura de alrededor de los 6 metros. Sus hojas perennes de color verde grisáceo, emergen en grupos de 3 a 4, tienen forma de lanza, por lo que sus medidas oscilan entre 0,5 a 2 cm de ancho por entre 10 y 12 cm de largo. Además, poseen una textura dura y lisa, sobresaliendo en el centro un nervio bien marcado de tonalidad amarillenta o blanquecina.
The Queen Flower or Oleander shrub is characterized by a very dense branching with elegant and abundant foliage. On the other hand, its growth is fast and can reach a height of around 6 meters. Its grayish-green evergreen leaves, which emerge in groups of 3 to 4, are lance-shaped and measure between 0.5 to 2 cm wide and 10 to 12 cm long. In addition, they have a hard and smooth texture, with a well marked yellowish or whitish nerve protruding in the center.
En lo particular, para mí lo más cautivante de este arbusto es su magnífica floración, compuesta por maravillosas inflorescencias que se desarrollan de forma muy prolifera en grandes y espectaculares racimos. Como han podido observar en las imágenes que hoy tengo el placer de compartirles, cada inflorescencia está conformada por un número significativo de vistosas flores de aproximadamente 40 mm de diámetro, que, además, son muy aromáticas. En el caso de esta variedad en específico, las flores son compuestas, es decir, cada flor posee una doble capa de pétalos, por lo que las hace más hermosas y se asemejan a pequeñas rosas. Otro detalle a resaltar de las flores es que son hermafroditas y que demás del color que hoy les muestro, también es posible encontrarlas de color blanco, amarillo, salmón, fucsia, carmín, purpura y rojas.
In particular, for me the most captivating thing about this shrub is its magnificent flowering, composed of wonderful inflorescences that develop very prolifically in large and spectacular clusters. As you have been able to observe in the images that today I have the pleasure of sharing with you, each inflorescence is made up of a significant number of showy flowers of approximately 40 mm in diameter, which, in addition, are very aromatic. In the case of this specific variety, the flowers are compound, that is, each flower has a double layer of petals, which makes them more beautiful and resemble small roses. Another detail to highlight about the flowers is that they are hermaphrodite and besides the color that I show you today, it is also possible to find them in white, yellow, salmon, fuchsia, carmine, purple and red.
Para finalizar, hablemos un poco de los frutos de esta planta, los cuales son del tipo vainas, son alargadas, de forma cilíndricas y de color pardo, además, se encuentran recubierta de una especie de vellosidad. Miden entre 6 y 16 cm de largo, una vez alcanzan la madurez se abren únicamente por uno de sus lados para dejar salir de su interior las numerosas semillas de forma redondeada que contiene. Curiosamente, las semillas están cubiertas de una especie de pelos plumosos, estos tienen la función de permitir que, al salir de las vainas, estas queden suspendidas en el aire y puedan ser dispersadas por el viento.
Finally, let's talk a little about the fruits of this plant, which are pods type, are elongated, cylindrical in shape and brownish in color, in addition, they are covered with a kind of hairiness. They measure between 6 and 16 cm long, once they reach maturity they open only on one side to let out of its interior the numerous seeds of rounded form that it contains. Curiously, the seeds are covered with a kind of feathery hairs, these have the function of allowing that, when leaving the pods, they are suspended in the air and can be dispersed by the wind.
