Siempre digo que la naturaleza nos sorprende con la maravillas y diversidad que nos regala a diario. Y entre estos innumerables regalos se encuentra la especie que hoy les quiero compartir, la cual, por cierto, posee una notoria belleza e interesantes propiedades medicinales.
I always say that nature surprises us with the wonders and diversity it gives us every day. And among these countless gifts is the species that I want to share with you today, which, by the way, has a remarkable beauty and interesting medicinal properties.
Se trata nada más y nada menos, que de la Cerecita de Monte o Semeruco, nombres con los que se le conoce de forma común aquí en Venezuela a esta planta. En lo particular, siempre que veo esta planta o su fruto, regresan a mi memoria esos hermosos recuerdos de mi niñez en casa de mis abuelos maternos. Allí crecían de forma silvestre y cuando era época de cosecha, era maravilloso deleitarse con el delicioso sabor de sus bayas. Su sabor es una mezcla acida y dulce muy refrescante y agradable al paladar.
We are talking about nothing more and nothing less than the cherry of bush or Semeruco, names by which this plant is commonly known here in Venezuela. In particular, whenever I see this plant or its fruit, those beautiful memories of my childhood at my maternal grandparents' house come back to my memory. There they grew wild and when it was harvest time, it was wonderful to delight with the delicious taste of its berries. Its flavor is a sweet and sour mixture very refreshing and pleasant to the palate.
Acerola, Cereza de las Indias o manzanitas, son otros nombres comunes con los que se les conoce a esta planta arbustiva perteneciente a la familia Malpighiaceae y al género Malpighia. El nombre científico de la especie es Malpighia emarginata y es originaria de Centro América, las Antillas y las regiones tropicales de Suramerica, donde crece de forma silvestre. En la actualidad, gracias a su gran adaptabilidad, no solo se cultiva en países tropicales, si no, además, también en países subtropicales, como Australia, Etiopia, Filipinas, India Madagascar, Indonesia, Pakistán, Tailandia y Vietnam, por nombrar algunos.
Acerola, Indian Cherry or little apples, are other common names with which they are known to this bushy plant belonging to the family Malpighiaceae and the genus Malpighia. The scientific name of the species is Malpighia emarginata and it is native to Central America, the Antilles and the tropical regions of South America, where it grows wild. Nowadays, thanks to its great adaptability, it is not only cultivated in tropical countries, but also in subtropical countries, such as Australia, Ethiopia, Philippines, India, Madagascar, Indonesia, Pakistan, Thailand and Vietnam, to name a few.
En cuanto al aspecto del arbusto, este posee un tronco muy ramificado de corteza oscura y puede llegar a alcanzar como máximo unos 5 metros de altura. Su copa frondosa y de forma redondeada, está conformada por ramas cortas, que tienden a ser frágiles y cuando se desarrolla de forma silvestre poseen pequeñas espinas. El espeso follaje es de un hermoso y brillante color verde oscuro, logrando un maravilloso contraste con sus pequeñas abundantes bayas de color rojo carmesí.
As for the appearance of the shrub, it has a very branched trunk with dark bark and can reach a maximum height of 5 meters. Its leafy, rounded crown is made up of short branches, which tend to be fragile and, when growing wild, have small thorns. The thick foliage is of a beautiful and shiny dark green color, achieving a wonderful contrast with its abundant small crimson red berries.
Como ya les comenté, la planta de cerezo silvestre, se caracteriza por poseer un follaje frondoso. Está conformado por pequeñas hojas simples de color verde oscuro, en forma ovalada, que se encuentran dispuesta de forma opuestas en torno a las ramas y miden entre 5 y 12 milímetros de largo.
As I have already mentioned, the wild cherry plant is characterized by its leafy foliage. It is made up of small, simple, oval-shaped, dark green leaves, which are arranged opposite each other around the branches and measure between 5 and 12 millimeters long.
Las flores del arbusto de Semeruco son pequeñas y delicadas, constan de 5 pétalos y llegan a medir hasta 15 mm. Suelen desarrollarse en pequeños racimos y dependiendo de la especie el color varía entre rojo, rosado, lila y en algunos casos pueden ser blancas. En el caso particular de la especie que hoy les comparto, como pueden ver en las imágenes, su florecilla posee un hermoso color rosado.
The flowers of the Semeruco shrub are small and delicate, consisting of 5 petals and measure up to 15 mm. They usually develop in small clusters and depending on the species the color varies between red, pink, lilac and in some cases they can be white. In the particular case of the species that I share with you today, as you can see in the images, its small flower has a beautiful pink color.
El fruto es el mayor atractivo de este arbusto, primeramente, porque resulta un verdadero espectáculo visual cuando está en su período de dar frutos, el cual ocurre entre 3 y 4 veces al año. Durante este período es hermoso, porque las pequeñas bayas al madurar se tornan de un intenso y muy brillante color rojo, lo que las hace resaltar primorosamente sobre el verde follaje.
The fruit is the main attraction of this shrub, firstly, because it is a real visual spectacle when it is in its fruiting period, which occurs between 3 and 4 times a year. During this period it is beautiful, because the small berries when ripe turn an intense and very bright red color, which makes them stand out beautifully against the green foliage.
Pero, sus frutos no solo son atractivos a nivel ornamental, estas pequeñas bayas como ya les había comentado poseen una pulpa con una deliciosa mezcla de sabor entre dulce y ácido, que es realmente agradable al paladar. Poseen forma redonda y su tamaño aproximado es de unos 2 cm de diámetro y 20 g de peso; además, están recubiertas de una delgada, lisa y brillante piel. La piel cuando aún no llegan a madurar el fruto, es de un hermoso color verde que luego poco a poco va cambiando tornándose anaranjado hasta llegar a un intenso color rojo cuando están completamente maduras.
But, its fruits are not only attractive ornamentally, these small berries as I had already mentioned have a pulp with a delicious mixture of sweet and sour taste, which is really pleasant to the palate. They have a round shape and their approximate size is about 2 cm in diameter and 20 g in weight; in addition, they are covered with a thin, smooth and shiny skin. The skin, when the fruit is not yet ripe, is a beautiful green color that gradually changes to orange until it reaches an intense red color when they are fully ripe.
El fruto maduro, es como ver diminutas manzanitas rojas, son realmente primorosas, pero, lo mejor es que, además, son una potente bomba de vitamina C. Esto se debe, a que es la fruta comestible con más contenido de ácido ascórbico que se conoce, en proporción, puede llegar a contener de 20 a 30 veces más vitamina C que las naranjas.
The ripe fruit is like seeing tiny red apples, they are really beautiful, but the best thing is that they are also a powerful vitamin C bomb. This is because it is the edible fruit with the highest ascorbic acid content known, in proportion, it can contain 20 to 30 times more vitamin C than oranges.
Ahora, aunque en su exterior se asemejan a pequeñas mazanas o nos recuerdan a las cerezas del viejo continente europeo, interiormente son muy diferente, se encuentra separado en gajos formados por tres carozos, muy comprimidos entre ellos. Por otro lado, su pulpa de color de color amarillo es muy jugosa y suave, con un delicioso sabor ácido y dulce al estar completamente madura. Adicionalmente, tiene un delicioso e inconfundible aroma que evoca frescura y los más felices días de la niñez.

On the other hand, its yellow pulp is very juicy and soft, with a delicious acid and sweet flavor when fully ripe. Additionally, it has a delicious and unmistakable aroma that evokes freshness and the happiest days of childhood.
Sus usos son diversos, desde su valor ornamental como arbusto en jardines o en interiores, cultivado en forma de bonsái. Pasando por su valor nutricional, debido al alto contenido de vitamina C que ya les comenté, que posee esta fruta, además, también contiene vitaminas B1, B6, A y minerales esenciales como el hierro, calcio, fósforo, potasio y magnesio. Incluso, posee dosis considerables de fitonutrientes, como es el caso de los, flavonoides, antocianinas y carotenoides fenólicos. Estos dos últimos, por su alto contenido de pigmento son utilizado para la obtención de colorante alimenticio.
Its uses are diverse, from its ornamental value as a shrub in gardens or indoors, cultivated in the form of bonsai. Its nutritional value, due to the high content of vitamin C that this fruit possesses, also contains vitamins B1, B6, A and essential minerals such as iron, calcium, phosphorus, potassium and magnesium. It also has considerable doses of phytonutrients, such as flavonoids, anthocyanins and phenolic carotenoids. These last two, due to their high pigment content, are used to obtain food coloring.
Además, la cerecita es utilizada para preparar deliciosos jugos, helados, jaleas, mermeladas, dulces e incluso para elaborar licores. En el caso de sus usos medicinales, dentro de la cultura popular, es utilizada como terapia tradicional para combatir la fatiga, resfriado, diarrea e infecciones de garganta. Por ahora, la industria farmacéutica la utiliza en la elaboración de cosméticos y están en estudio sus propiedades antioxidantes, antitumorales y anti hiperglucémicas.
In addition, the cherry is used to prepare delicious juices, ice creams, jellies, jams, candies and even to make liqueurs. In the case of its medicinal uses, within the popular culture, it is used as a traditional therapy to combat fatigue, colds, diarrhea and throat infections. For now, the pharmaceutical industry uses it in the elaboration of cosmetics and its antioxidant, antitumor and anti-hyperglycemic properties are under study.
Como han podido leer, esta pequeña fruta es todo un estuche de monerías, todas estas razones que ya les he mencionado, le han permitido ganarse un lugar especial en el corazón del venezolano. Por ejemplo, es uno de los símbolos naturales del estado Lara, el reconocido cantautor Ali Primera, oriundo del estado Falcón, en varias de sus creaciones hace referencia a esta deliciosa fruta. Y como no nombrar a mi querida región oriental, donde sirvió de inspiración a mi paisano cantautor y cultor popular carupanero, el ilustre, Luis Mariano Rivera con su famosa canción Cerecita. As you have been able to read, this small fruit is a whole case of cuteness, all these reasons that I have already mentioned, have allowed it to earn a special place in the heart of Venezuelans. For example, it is one of the natural symbols of the state of Lara, the renowned singer-songwriter Ali Primera, a native of the state of Falcón, makes reference to this delicious fruit in several of his creations. I am so excited to see your article. I realise that acerola which is considered a superfood is my beloved cherries which I use as a child. I see it is the same for you. When I lived in the Caribbean I certainly had my fill of these delicious tart but sweet fruit. These cherries are amazing. It is nice to learn that it is now being cultivated in many countries around the world. Thanks so much for bringing back wonderful childhood memories.

As children, we loved these cherries so much - we planted our own tree and nurtured it. However, we never had a chance to eat any of the fruit it bore.
