What is guava?

The guava (Psidium guajava) is a tropical fruit native to the Americas and belongs to the myrtaceae family.

It was spread by the Spanish and Portuguese to all the tropics of the world, where it has become naturalized thanks to birds.

At present, it extends from Mexico and Central America to South America, specifically Brazil and Peru, the Antilles and southern Florida, as well as Taiwan, Hawaii, Thailand, the Philippines and Malaysia, Brazil being the main producer.

Improve digestion

Guava is rich in fiber, which stimulates bowel movements, helping to prevent constipation. In addition, when ingested with peel it also helps to combat stomach acidity, being very good to complement the treatment of gastric and duodenal ulcers.

Increase the body's defenses

Guava is one of the fruits richest in vitamin C, a nutrient that helps increase the body's defense cells, improving the immune system and making it more resistant to viruses.

Improve diarrhea

Some studies indicate that guava leaf extract has astringent, antispasmodic and antimicrobial properties, which help reduce both diarrhea (acute or chronic), abdominal pain and possible microorganisms causing it, and can be ingested as a tea to treat gastroenteritis and infantile dysentery.

Guava compote

A delicious guava compote or guavas in syrup can be made following simple instructions.

Wash and dry the guavas. Put water, cinnamon and lemon juice in a large pot. Turn the heat on medium. Lower the heat to low as soon as it starts to boil, and let it boil for twelve minutes to thicken.

While the syrup is simmering, cut the guavas on end and then in half. Remove the seeds with a small spoon, making sure the guavas do not break. Add the guavas when the syrup is thick, and when it starts to boil again, cook for two more minutes, cover, remove from heat and let cool.

Poner a fuego medio.
