Saludos, Hivers amantes de la naturaleza. Hace días quería hacer mi entrada en este concurso de naturaleza Asombrosa, pero aún me faltaba completar mi artículo con unas fotografías.

I wanted to make my entry in this Amazing Nature contest a few days ago, but I still needed to complete my article with some pictures.
Bueno, aquí está por fin mi participación para el concurso #amazingnature de mayo 2021-1.
El caso es que en mi casa tengo un patio y un pequeño jardín que frecuentemente es visitado por iguanas, aves, gatos, y hasta una que otra culebra. Pues esta noche del martes 4 de mayo, por fin pude tomar las fotos de un animal que nos ha visitado durante estas noches.
Well, here is finally my entry for the May 2021-1 #amazingnature contest.
The thing is that in my house I have a patio and a small garden that is frequently visited by iguanas, birds, cats, and even a snake or two. Well, tonight, Tuesday 4th May, I was finally able to take pictures of an animal that has been visiting us during these night.

Mi perro Roky nos ha despertado varias veces ladrando desesperado y he pensado que se trata de unos gatos que vienen en busca de la compañía de mi mínima.
My dog Roky has woken us up several times barking desperately and I thought that it was some cats that came in search of the company of my minimum.

El animal que me ha estado visitando es un marsupial, comúnmente llamado zarigueya (Didelphimorphia),y en mi país Venezuela se le conoce comúnmente como rabipelado común, por su cola carente de pelos; algo particular con respecto a el nombre de este marsupial es que a lo largo del continente americano casi ningún país coincide en el nombre ya que es muy variado.
The animal that has been visiting me is a marsupial, commonly called zarigueya (Didelphimorphia), and in my country Venezuela it is commonly known as rabipelado común, because of its hairless tail; something particular about the name of this marsupial is that throughout the American continent almost no country coincides in the name as it is very varied.
Su aspecto parecido a un gran roedor es desagradable para muchos, tienen unos afilados dientes y aunque en su mayoría se alimentan de insectos también su dieta incluye ratones, aves, principalmente sus huevos. Algo que me parece asombroso de esos animalitos es su adaptabilidad a diferentes hábitats, y que puede consumir una variedad de animales pequeños, entre ellos escorpiones, sepientes, roedores, cucarachas, y también garrapatas, esta característica de su dieta es importante ya que contribuye a mantener el equilibrio en cuanto a la propagación de estas otras especies.
Their large rodent-like appearance is off-putting to many, they have sharp teeth and although they mostly feed on insects, their diet also includes mice, birds, mainly their eggs. Something I find amazing about these little animals is their adaptability to different habitats, and that they can consume a variety of small animals, including scorpions, snakes, rodents, cockroaches, and also ticks, this feature of their diet is important as it helps to maintain the balance in terms of the spread of these other species.
Este de la fotografía es de la especie del género Delphis marsupialis, la más común de mi país, y pude tomar estas espléndidas fotografías gracias a que mi perro Roky lo correteo y la zarigueya se trepó en una de mis matas de plátanos, allí permaneció inmóvil y nerviosa porque la alumbramos con una lámpara mientras yo tomaba las fotografías.
This one in the photograph is of the Delphis marsupialis species, the most common in my country, and I was able to take these splendid photographs thanks to the fact that my dog Roky ran it around and the possum climbed into one of my banana bushes, where it remained motionless and nervous because we shone a lamp on it while I was taking the photographs.
Posee un pelaje corto y otro más largo. Sus ojos parecen dos esferas negras, tiene el hocico puntiagudo y con largos bigotes. El color de su pelaje es característico de esta especie, el tono es como un marrón muy claro y patas oscuras, sus orejas son casi negras y puntiagudas de hecho esa combinación de colores se me hace parecida a la de mi gata minina.
It has a short and a longer coat. Its eyes look like two black spheres, its muzzle is pointed and has long whiskers. The colour of his coat is characteristic of this species, the tone is like a very light brown and dark paws, his ears are almost black and pointed, in fact this combination of colours is similar to that of my kitten.
La carne de esta especie es considerada de suave y agradable sabor,es una carne de caza muy preciada por campesinos y pobladores locales, lo que la convierte en una especie en peligro de extinción. Un dato interesante de estos animales es que son considerados reservorios (portadores asintomáticos) de enfermedades zoonóticas como el mal de Chagas y la leishmaniasis.
The meat of this species is considered to have a mild and pleasant flavour, and is highly prized game meat by farmers and local people, which makes it an endangered species. An interesting fact about these animals is that they are considered reservoirs (asymptomatic carriers) of zoonotic diseases such as Chagas disease and leishmaniasis.
En cuanto a su periodo de gestación es apenas de uno 14 días, y las crías al nacer permanecen en un saco o repliegue de piel (marsupio) aproximadamente unos dos meses hasta terminar su desarrollo pleno y allí dentro se alimentan de las glándulas mamarias. Pasado este tiempo, es común verlos trepados en el lomo de las madres. Esta es una de las razones por lo que debería ser prohibida la caza de las zarigueyas que aún estén llevando sus crías.
The gestation period is only about 14 days, and the young remain in a sac or fold of skin (marsupium) for about two months until they are fully developed, where they feed on the mammary glands. After this time, it is common to see them climbing on the mother's back. This is one of the reasons why it should be forbidden to hunt possums that are still carrying their young.
Al parecer este visitante nocturno de mi patio es macho por la característica que apreciamos en la foto, tampoco pudimos observar que llevará crías consigo, está muy bien desarrollado y calculamos que debe medir unos treinta y tres centímetros.
It seems that this nocturnal visitor to my patio is a male because of the characteristic that we can see in the photo, nor could we observe that he is carrying young, he is very well developed and we calculate that he must measure about thirty-three centimetres.
Es muy común toparse con estos animalitos en los patios de las casas donde hay árboles con nidos de pájaros, ahora puedo deducir por que he encontrado tantos niditos tirados en el piso de mi patio, algo que había atribuído a otro tipo de depredadores.
It is very common to come across these little animals in the backyards of houses where there are trees with bird nests, now I can deduce why I have found so many nests lying on the ground in my yard, something I had attributed to other types of predators.
Otro dato asombroso es que cuando se ve acorralado muestra sus poderosos y afilados dientes y aunque no es considerado un animal peligroso, si puede llegar a morder.
Un mecanismo de defensa muy utilizado por este animal es que al verse acorralado en el piso finge estar muerto, tal vez para que su depredador lo deje tranquilo.
Another amazing fact is that when cornered it shows its powerful and sharp teeth and although it is not considered a dangerous animal, it can bite.
A defence mechanism used by this animal is that when it is cornered on the ground it pretends to be dead, perhaps so that its predator will leave it alone.
Particularmente en la familia no consumimos estos animales como alimentos, preferimos verlos y aprender de ellos.
Particularly in our family we do not eat these animals as food, we prefer to watch them and learn from them.
