Fruit flies : A big threat to our beautiful tropical fruits!

At the back of my restaurant, there's quite a lot of space where we've planted a lot of different fruits, veggies and herbs!

Whole year round we get amazing fresh produces to enjoy, which is simply great both for the family and guests of my restaurant!

But we need a lot of care if we want to get some top quality fruits...

Fruits = Fruit flies haven!!!

Oh yes...when you have such juicy and delicious fruits around...expect a real lot of fruit flies too!!!

This can really get annoying in fact...

Fruit flies have been such a big problem all around the island, destroying hectares of fruits in matters of days...

The thing is that...once the fruit is semi ripe, that is; the skin a little soft...these flies will just sting the fruits and drop their eggs in there...

Surprise surprise!

And when it's harvest time...surprise...surprise!!!

The fruits are full of larvae...

Fruits with harder skin tends to resist these flies but Starfruits, Papaya and Guavas are sometimes completely affected.

Fighting fruits flies!!!

With the assistance of the ministry of health, they give out this little thing that you see hanging on our guava tree!

It is a trap for those disturbing fruit flies!

Very soon the guavas are going to start ripening and we had to place the trap as soon as possible to limit the damages!

The trap!

I can't say it is working at 100%, as we still can see a lot of flies flying around...but not as much as before putting the trap though!

Let me show you closer inside the trap for you to get an idea of how many flies are already in!

That piece of wood is dip into something (no idea what) and handed over by the ministry to all those having fruit flies problems!

And then we just use a plastic bottle and hang on the tree as you can see in the photos.

The fruit flies get attracted to that wood...smell it and boom!!!

Now imagine how much more we have out there!

Apart from this method, we also do fumigation from time to time which works also.

And the natural way we try repelling these flies are by planting curry leaves, aloe vera, basil and lemongrass plants here and there.

They are all well known flies repellent!

Sort:

Todas las fotografías están espectaculares, aquí en Venezuela esas frutas son: Tamarindo, papaya, Riñón, guayaba, (insectos), sábila, y no logro identificar la última.
Un saludo del otro lado del mundo chef.

Thank you so much for reading my post, really appreciate it!
🙏🙏🙏

The last photo is a herb we mainly use in curry...they are called curry leaves...very flavourful.

Apple cider vinegar works rly well too

Ohhh this is really nice to know! Will try spray some there under the trees, maybe it will make the flies go away.
Never knew about apple cider, thanks for sharing my friend!
🙏🙏🙏

it attracts them so you puyt it in a bowl with a bit of fairy liquid and they drown in it a bit sad but sommetimes need to do it.

Hi, thanks for sharing this information, combining the option of using a chemical and the option using plants.
Impressive the amount of Fruit flies in the bottle!
Cheers

My pleasure sharing my friend!
