Succulent Planting 101: Tips, Tricks, and Must-Knows

in Amazing Naturelast month (edited)

Recently, I got obsessed with one thing- Succulent!! Planting trees is my second most favourite thing to do (the first one is painting!). As I don’t own any backyard or rooftop, I’ve to choose my baranda (balcony) for planting. That’s why I have to think about the space before buying any big plants.

It all started when the other day, I went on my neighbour’s house. She is a professional gardener and my mentor for planting trees. I always go to her whenever I’ve any issue with plants. Or sometimes, just to soak up some green vibes. She has different types of various plants in her collection. So when I went for her, she showed her new collection of succulents. I was equally surprised and excited seeing various types of plants in such a small place.

This is the first time I got to know what succulent is! She taught me all the details, how to plant and everything that a beginner needs to know.

When I came home, I tried to explore more about this plant. Mainly, the “Succulent” comes from the latin word, “sucus” which means juice or sap. This plant mainly grows in extremely warm or dry areas like the desert. Its nourishing leaves help them to survive in the warm conditions. For this reason, their characteristics are different compared with our regular plant. You only need to water them once or twice a week.

In our country, we are facing extreme heat waves for the last two months. And it’s getting really difficult for me to protect my indoor plants. Though I’ve been watering them regularly, they died out. It’s so painful to see your favourite plant die!

So in this time, succulent can be a game changer! As they have the superpower to fight with heat I think it’ll be an excellent choice to plant these things.

Not only this, to me, the best thing about succulent is, that I can plant hundreds of plants in just a small corner of my home. And that’s the thing I have been dreaming about for years! So I started to collect pots and plants to explore this new world of plants!

But to my utter surprise, it comes out that the price of succulent is unimaginable! Though the plant is so small, you have to pay a fortune for it! Check out this website for more details! And here is one of my country’s website from where I was planning to buy.

So finding no other alternative, I went to my neighbour apu’s home again to rant. Seeing my condition, she laughed for a while and gave me some of her plants. I got so emotional seeing all those pretty cute little buddies!

The next day, I ordered some succulent pots from a website. When they arrived I was pleased because these are exactly the same as what I wanted.

I always prefer clay pots over plastics for plants as they can get scope to breathe. But in our country, plastic pots are everywhere! It’s getting so hard for me to manage clay pots for my plants. That’s why when I saw these colourful little pots, I just couldn’t be happier!

Now, I’m not exactly a gardening pro. So I google again on how to plant these little buddies. For succulents, you don’t need regular soil for planting. They have shallow root systems and prefer soil that is well-draining. So I was preparing the pot with sand, brick sand and loose rocky soil. Also, as the plant needs to have a proper drainage system, I checked properly if these new pots have enough holes in the bottom. On those online pages, they have ready-mixed soil for succulents. If my homemade soil mix doesn’t work out, then I think I have to buy that ready-mix for the future.

Exploring those websites, I also found out that they sell succulent seeds which are comparably lower in price. I will keep this in mind too for my upcoming plant project!

After all this hustle and bustle, this is the outcome! Oh, my apu also said that for watering this plant, you need to be extra cautious. The best and safest way is, spraying water. Normally I used to pour water on plants but I have found something for spraying. Then I found an old body mist container which I bought 2 years ago from Minigood :P. I cleaned it out very well and made it my new water sprayer!

These days, I'm smitten with my succulents. Wherever I go to my little corner on the balcony, I feel an inner peace watching over these little plants. The chubby leaves have their way to attract others! These gorgeous plants can give you the warmest love that you can ever imagine! I highly recommend getting yourself some succulents. Trust me, they'll bring a smile to your face every time you see them. Who knew that something so small could have such a big impact?

My mom also have succulents in her garden. These are very cute plants and super easy to maintain. Are all succulents flower bearing? I remember I saw one of my mom's had a flower in it.

Unfortunately no, these aren't hold any flower. But I'm planning to collect those too!! Those succulents who bear flowers are little costly and need special care.
