Changing Seasons: Working With my Personal "Seasons"

I stood outside this evening, waiting for our dog to do her business in the back yard. It was barely dinnertime and it was starting to get dark.

The seasons are changing. Fall is here, or certainly just around the corner. We have been harvesting all sorts of things in our vegetable garden, preserving food for winter. The leaves on most of the plants are starting to get that "tired" look that comes with the end of summer. There are still apples, and pumpkins, and lots of tomatoes... but things are visibly coming to an end.

There was a slight "bite" to the air, as the sun passed beyond the horizon.

As I stood there, I got thinking about my personal seasons.

Labor Day has just passed, and I'm about to ramp up.

As the days continue to get shorter and the nights longer, I start working a lot more on creative endeavors like my art and my writing. My sideline business of selling old postage stamps to collectors also ramps up because stamp collecting tends to be a winter season activity.

Thinking back on most of my adult life, I have always struggled to "get much of anything done" during the summer months. I try — and I have to, because there are always bills to be paid — but I just have never been able to sustain any sort of productivity during the summer months.

The more I thought about it, the more I realized that my "personal season" runs from about the first week in September (Labor Day) till maybe mid-May. During June, July and August, working is really a struggle.
