The Mallards Return Once Again -by Sunscape

It has been a few weeks now since the same pair of Mallard Ducks arrived. This will be the second year in a row that the same pair have come to enjoy the small pond next to my porch. I was delighted when I first saw them fly into the yard earlier this month. I knew right away that it was the same pair from last year as I recognized their markings.

They love the cracked corn I put out for all the birds. I actually got the female to eat corn right out of the palm of my hand. That was really cool to experience as I was not sure if she would come close enough to me. The male duck likes to lie down while eating most of the time which I find kinda funny.

After a snack of corn the pair always go into the pond for a drink and a nice swim together.

There is always the ritual preening time for them both after a little swim. Here the male stands guard while she works her way through her feathers. Then it is his turn and she returns the favor by watching over him, now that is true companionship.

Of course, after all that eating, swimming, and preening it was time for a long nap pondside. Now, for me, it does not get any sweeter than that!
