Many people turn into abusers and manipulators if you are friendly to them. There's a Dutch expression that says: If you give them a finger they take the entire hand.
What happens is you can't say 'no' and you are not clear in stating your boundaries. This means they keep pushing, trying till you snap out and can't take it any longer.
I would say be realistic. Start with yourself, your own little world first. Focus on that and keep in mind we all are products of how we've been raised, who taught and brainwashed us, no one is a free spirit or perfect.
