Amigos de Amazing Nature, hoy les comparto fotografías de una planta de Onoto, tal y como la conocemos en Venezuela. Dicha especie recibe nombres como “achiote”, “rocu”, “bija”[3] a lo largo de América Central y del Sur. Otro nombre que se le ha dado es el "Azafran de los pobres". Su nombre científico es "Baixa Orellana"
Friends of Amazing Nature, today I share with you photographs of an Onoto plant, as we know it in Venezuela. This species receives names such as “achiote”, “rocu”, “bija”[3] throughout Central and South America. Another name that has been given to it is the "Saffron of the poor". Its scientific name is "Baixa Orellana".
Al ver la planta me atrajo el observar al mismo tiempo las flores, y frutos en diferentes etapas de desarrollo, y especialmente la hermosa paleta de colores, que incluye lilas, terracotas, rojos y marrones sobre el verde fondo de la copa del árbol.
Seeing the plant, I was attracted to observe the flowers and fruits in different stages of development at the same time, and especially the beautiful color palette, which includes lilacs, terracottas, reds and browns on the green background of the treetop.

Flores | Flowers
Estas flores fueron fotografiadas cerca del mediodía luego de unas gotas de lluvia, por lo que no se ven en todo su esplendor, sino algo mustias. Pero nos sregalan toda su hermosura y color lila, aunque puede aparecer en la gama de azul a rosado. Presentan muchos sestambres y se observa que se van secando sin caerse para ir dando paso al fruto.
These flowers were photographed around noon after a few drops of rain, so they are not seen in all their splendor, but rather withered. But they give us all their beauty and lilac color, although it can appear in the range from blue to pink. They present many sestambres and it is observed that they dry out without falling to give way to the fruit.

Frutos | Fruits
Los frutos son unas cápsulas cubiertas de vellos que luego se vuelven espinas suaves, se va secando en el árbol y se abren para dejar salir las semillas. Mismas que tienen uso en gastronomía casera e industrial, al igual que beneficios médicos y cosmeticos, y la de pintura. Esto se debe a la capa que recubre las semillas que contiene muchos betacarotenos que otorgan el color rojo intenso.[2]
The fruits are capsules covered with hairs that later become soft spines, dry on the tree and open to release the seeds. The same ones that are used in home and industrial gastronomy, as well as medical and cosmetic benefits. This is due to the layer that covers the seeds that contains many beta carotene that give the intense red color.[2]

Tronco y la Copa | Trunk and crown
El onoto es un arbusto, puede crecer hasta los cinco metros de altura[3]. Este ejemplar sin embargo apenas supera los 2 metros, pregunté a la dueña de la casa y ella me informó que lo poda con regularidad. La copa se abre ampliamente con forma cónica o piramidal.
The onoto is a bush, it can grow up to five meters high[3]. However, this specimen barely exceeds 2 meters, I asked the owner of the house and she informed me that she prunes it regularly. The cup opens widely with a conical or pyramidal shape.
