My best girl is getting married, and I have the incredible honor of being her designer for the civil wedding! I’m so excited to share this journey with you all.

Precious and I have been friends since high school that’s more than 10 years ago. We had a lot in common and were inseparable. We grew especially close during our second year when she lost her father; she was often moody and unhappy, but comforting and cheering her up brought us even closer.

When I got married three years ago, Precious was right there for me. She even purchased a new rivet machine just so I could use it to bead my wedding dress! That’s the kind of friend she is.
I feel more honored than words can say to be her designer for her big day. She has truly grown to be more than a friend, she is a sister to me.

Did I mention Precious is also a talented fashion designer? She could have easily chosen to sew her dress herself, but she decided to put her trust in me, and I’m determined not to let her down.
She recently sent in her fabric through the courier service and handwrote her measurements. Since this is my first time sewing for her, I knew a test fit was essential before cutting into the final fabric.

I immediately went ahead to draft her pattern. I really enjoy working with patterns rather than freehand, it gives you a glimpse of the final outcome and makes it easy to detect and fix errors or alterations before the first stitch on the real fabric.

I used some leftover fabrics to transfer the pattern and sew the test fit. She had requested a beautiful straight shape dress with plunge neckline and a cape. For this initial test, I omitted the cape and neck details, focusing only on the bodice. She specified she wants a deep, but not too deep, plunge neckline.

After I was done, she came in for her fitting, and the test fit looked almost perfect on her!

I realized I had made one small mistake, I had used a very short skirt zipper that only went to the waistline, so I had to pull it out just so she could slip the dress on! That’s why we do test fits, right?
The final conclusion, Precious wants the plunge deepened by 1.5 inches.

We noted some excess around her underbust area, which I’ll take out.
With these final notes, I am now ready to make the real, actual dress for her big day!

The final dress will be a beautiful white, featuring a luxurious Chantilly lace paired with soft scuba crepe fabrics.
Wishing you all a peaceful and fun weekend!
