Hello dear community, I wish you a good evening. Today is Friday the 29th, and in this block, we will be launching our "Basic Garment Pattern Making" project for the first time. Today's class will show you how to draft a simple shorts pattern in the comfort of your own home. If you'd like to learn with me how to draft your own custom-made shorts, stay tuned and enjoy the process. Let's get started with the materials and measurements.

Materiales: | Materials:
- Papel para patronar (Bond, reciclado ,cualquiera que tengas)
- Tijera de papel
- Regla
- Marcadores y lápiz
- Medidas
- Pattern paper (Bond, recycled, any you have)
- Paper scissors
- Ruler
- Markers and pencil
- Measuring sticks

| Medidas a usar | Measures to use |
|---|---|
| •Contorno de cintura:70cm÷4=17.5cm | •Waist circumference:70cm÷4=17.5cm |
| •Contorno de cadera:74÷4=18.5cm | •Hip circumference:74÷4=18.5cm |
| •Largo total del short:28 cm | •Total length of the shorts: 28 cm |
| •Tiro:3.5cm a 4cm | •Incline: 3.5cm to 4cm |
We calculate the crotch depth by dividing the first number of the hip circumference by two (7 cm ÷ 2=3.5). We can increase this to 4 cm if the fabric of the shorts does not stretch.

Pasos a seguir: | Steps to follow:

Paso 01
Step 01
For the first step, we'll be making the front part of the shorts. We'll start by squaring up our paper. In this case, I started at one of the corners of the paper and drew a square with a quarter of the hip measurement, which is 18.5 cm. All four sides of the square are the same measurement. Now, on the right side where the square ends at the crotch, we'll measure 4 cm from the crotch measurement. We'll use a ruler to draw a horizontal line 4 cm outwards, as seen in the second image. From where we started drawing the line, we'll also go up 4 cm on the right side of the square and mark a point as a guide. Next, on the left side, we'll measure vertically from top to bottom the total length of the shorts. In this case, it's 28 cm. We mark a point and measure those 28 cm again on the left side, drawing a vertical and horizontal line below, connecting the points. This will be the leg part of the shorts.

Paso 02
Step 02
As a next step, at the bottom of the leg, we're going to go in 2 cm on the right side and 2 cm on the left side. On both sides, we'll make a point as a guide and draw an angled line from the crotch line to the points we made at the 2 cm mark. Now we're going to draw the curved line that defines the crotch of the shorts, going from the point where we went up 4 cm to where we ended up at the other point where we took out 4 cm, as shown in the image.

Paso 03
Step 03
Now we'll make the back pattern for the shorts. To do this, we leave a space of approximately 5 cm at the bottom of the paper, and then go up a few centimeters. We follow the same procedure as with the front, which is to make a square with four equal corners, 18.5 cm on each side. It's worth noting that these measurements I'm giving you are for a child, but you can adjust them to your own. Next, we measure 4 cm towards the right side where the square ends, and then another 2 cm. Why? Because we will only place half of another 4 cm for the back of the standard, this helps to ensure that our shorts have a loose fit in the buttocks area, whether for a child or an adult. Now, after we have taken out 4 cm plus the other 2 cm, remember to always make points and mark the lines with the ruler. Then we will also mark the total length of the shorts, which would be 28 cm. We mark and make a horizontal line and where the crotch ends downwards, a vertical line. Now we go in 2 cm at the top of the square and from there we go up 3 cm to give height to the piece.

Paso 04
Step 04
Then, at the bottom, we again measure in 2 cm on both sides of our leg. Now, since the paper wasn't long enough on the left side to measure the side centimeters, we'll glue on another piece of paper. At the top, where the square begins, we draw a 2 cm line outwards, make a point, and draw another slanted line down to where the slanted leg line ends. Finally, we draw a slanted line from the point where the 2 cm ends to where the 3 cm rise. With this, we'll then draw the crotch curve, respecting the points we've marked and drawn upwards. With the pink highlighter, you can see the curved line I made between the marked points. This completes our back pattern.

This is the final result of my pieces already cut, respecting the lines I made with markings. Here we can see how we already have our pieces ready to cut in the fabrics. Before I go, I want to give you a recommendation: when you go to cut these patterns in stretch fabric, make sure not to leave any seam allowance. But if you are going to cut your shorts in fabrics that do not stretch, you can leave between 1-2 cm.

I hope you enjoyed this first lesson. If you have any questions, feel free to leave them in the comments and I'll be happy to answer them. See you next Friday for flannel pattern making. Don't miss the next lesson! Best wishes, and thanks for reading. 🫂🥰
