Hey lovelies ❤️
It's your favorite girl @debbie-ese 😍
Welcome to my blog 🤗

In this post I will be sharing with you the step by step process of making a short dress with ankara fabrics that I made for a customer. The customer needed an easy to wear yet stylish outfit, simple but elegant. So, she opted for this style which we decided on the kind of fabrics we will use and I had to source for it. The sourcing process was not stressful for me at all, I had to only take photographs of a number of fabrics and sent to her which she choose from.
Materials Needed
- 4 yards Ankara fabrics
- 1 yard chantilly lace
- 5-7 yards tomato trimming
- 3 yards lining
- Zip
- Elastic
- Matching threads
- Chalk
Step by Step
Let's start by highlighting the measurements we will be using for this gown. These are the measurements: bust (36"), underbust (28"), shoulder (15"), waist (28"), hip (38"), top length (34"), skirt length (41"), sleeve length(22"), round sleeve (15").

Start by folding your fabric into two and marking out the measurements on the fabric. Begin by taking the shoulder measurement of 15" and divide it by 2 which is 7.5". Then continue by taking the bust measurement 36" divided by 4 which is 9".

Next take the waist measurement 28" divided by 4 which is 7" and continue by taking the full length (34"). The dress is intended to pass the knee area a little bit.

The dress will have a little slit at the neckline of about 4".

Next, cut the marked areas out accordingly. Use the front piece to cut the back piece and include 2" allowance for zipper.

Now, cut out the front piece and back piece of the lining by recreating it with the main fabric you just cut.
Next, fold the chantilly lace into two, place it on the upper area of the ankara fabric as displayed in the picture and cut out 12" length.

Also, fold the chantilly lace one more time and place it on the lower part of the ankara fabric and cut out 12" length.
Next, to cut the sleeve the ankara fabric will be folded into four, then take the round arm hole measurements which is 24" and divide by 2 which will give us 12", then come down by 1", take the round sleeve measurements 15" divided by 2 which is 7.5". Add extra 1" for allowance totally 8.5".

Im making the full length of the sleeve 13" wide and I will connect the lines and cut the sleeves out.
Now, it is time to place the right side of the front piece of the main (ankara) fabric on your cutting table and place the black chantilly lace on it. Hold the lace down with pins to prevent it from flying around. Repeat the same process for the lower part of the dress as well.

Use your sewing machine to neatly sew it down.
Then at the rough edge of the lace we will use tomato trimmings to cover the rough edges by attaching them.
Next, use the lining fabrics to turn the ankara fabric, do this for both the front and back.

Then attach zipper to the back piece and join the shoulders together neatly and attach the sleeves. Also, add tomatoes trimming to the edge of the lace on the sleeves.
Next, give the dress a good press especially all the joinings.

For fittings, wear the dress on a mannequin to check for any necessary adjustments and you can also invite the customer in for fittings.

Your dress is ready.
