In this post I will be sharing with you how to make a two piece top and trouser using rib fabrics. The design is a stylish one that can be worn to both casual and formal outings, it depends on how best you can style and accesorise yourself.

I have worked with some rib fabrics before now but this one I used in making this outfit is of a different quality, not as standard as the one I'm used to but it is not bad though.

Materials Needed

  • 3½ Cotton rib fabrics
  • Gum stay
  • Hemming gum
  • Threads matching the outfit
  • Scissors
  • 20" elastic
  • Tailoring chalk

Measurements

  • Bust - 46"
  • Shirt Length - 28"
  • Sleeve Length - 24"
  • Sleeve Width - 16"
  • Neckline - 7"
  • Armhole - 11"
  • Crotch - 14"
  • Waist - 40"
  • Hip - 50"
  • Trouser Length - 45"

Step by Step

  • The material we will be using has a stretchy texture which means you have to be precise in cutting and joining them together to get a good result.

  • With the above point established we will begin to mark out the neckline (7"), armhole (11"), bust measurement (46") and the length of the shirt (24") on the fabrics.

  • Next, the pieces will be cut out and the focus will be shifted to marking and cutting out the sleeve using sleeve length (24") and sleeve width (16") plus 1" seam allowance. Then I carefully cut them out.

  • Next, I will be drafting the trousers. It is a palazzo trouser and I will be making out the following measurements crotch (14"), waist (40"), hip (50"), trouser length (45").

  • Considering that it is a palazzo trousers I make use of the waist measurement all the way down from the hip to the ankle. Next, I cut the pieces out.
  • Next use overlocking machine to weave the edges to prevent fraying over time.1000277507.jpg
  • So, we will continue by joining the shoulder together and also attach the sleeve to the armholes. 1000277516.jpg
  • Next, we will join the left and right side of the top together and move swiftly to working on the collar.
  • On the collar, iron some gumstay on it after you're done cutting and attach the collar to the top.
  • Next, for the trousers, join the front and back crotch together and attach the pockets before sewing the side seams.
  • Next, you would create the waistband by cutting a long strip of the fabric, fold and sew it and attach to the trouser. 1000277513.jpg
  • Also, leave a small opening where the two ends meet and insert your 20" elastic and close the opening.
  • Next, sew a double fold hem for a clean finishing of the trouser bottom. 1000277518.jpg
  • Then create button holes on the top and attach buttons. If you don't have the machine you can take to people who do it as their business.
  • Next, give all the seams and hems a good press for a great final look.
