In this post I will be sharing with you how I made a gown for a client's daughter. Just on a sunny afternoon I saw a bike parked in front of my shop and a woman and a girl were alighting as they approached my shop. They were first time customers and the mother wanted to make a dress for her daughter that she would be wearing to church for a Children/Youth event. They came with an ankara fabrics and they would like to use it to make an A-line gown. The daughter further explained all the details she want in the gown from the sleeves to the length and so on. So, I took her measurements accordingly and we discussed other things such as the price of making the dress and the day for pickup.

Materials needed

  • 3½ yards of Ankara fabric
  • 3 yards Lining
  • Measuring tape
  • Zip
  • Tailoring chalk

Step by Step

  • The following are the customer's measurements: shoulder - 14", bust - 34", underbust - 31", waist - 32", hip - 39", bustline - 13", half cut - 17", gown length - 55", sleeve length - 22" and 16", round sleeve - 13" and 8".

  • We shall start by cutting the front piece and back piece of the dress by folding the ankara fabric into two.

  • Next, we will mark the shoulder measurement on the folded edge which is 14" divided by 2 which is 7".

  • After that has been done, we will go ahead to mark the bust area (34" divided by 4 which is 8.5"). Also, add extra 2" for sewing allowance. 20250325_144939.jpg

  • Next, using tailoring chalk we will mark out the underbust and waist measurements and add 2" sewing allowance too.

  • We would then cut out the round neckline that we will be using. 20250325_144748.jpg

  • Next, we would mark the waistline and create the a-line effect to be able to get the length of the gown.

  • Now, cut out all the marked areas with care and get ready to join them together. You can weave the edges (overlock stitches) of the fabrics before you begin to join them together.

  • Join the front and back pieces and join the left and right shoulder together too.

  • Like I have pointed out earlier that the sleeves of the dress is a peplum, so we will cut it out by folding the fabrics into four. Then we will mark a length of 16" and the upper length will be 6.5" (13" divided by 2 plus 1").

  • For the peplum, the full sleeve is is 22" and we have cut 16" for the upper sleeve which means it's leaving 6" for the peplum. Now, fold the 6" piece into 8 layers so you can cut both sides at once. 20250329_151517.jpg

  • Next attach the sleeves to the armholes after joining it together and attach your zip to the back of the dress.

  • Then give all the joinings in the dress a good press.

Thanks for your time.
