In this post I shall be sharing with you how I made a blouse and wrapper that is tied around the waist. This style is a traditional Nigerian style that is common among older women in those days but it is mostly adopted by young ladies nowadays. It has evolved over the years from a traditional attire to a modern and trendy fashion outfit that can be made using different types of fabrics as opposed to the asooke or adire that was used in those days.

Materials Needed

  • 4 yards of sequin lace fabric
  • Breast pad
  • 4 yards of black lining
  • Matching thread
  • Tailoring chalk
  • Zip

Step by Step

  • To start we will cut the blouse by placing the fabric on the table onflold making use of 15" wideness.

  • Next, we will take our shoulder line measurement which is 16" divided by 2 (8") and proceed to take the bust point measurement which is the distance between the shoulder and nipple point (12").

  • Then we shall take the underbust measurement which is the distance between shoulder point and underbust (16").
  • Next, we will take the half length measurement which is the difference between the shoulder to the waist (20").
  • The length of the top is 29". With the above measurements taken we will divide the nipple span (9") by 2 which will give us 4.5". So, the 4.5" will be taken through to the nipple point to the underbust, half length and full top length. Consequently the broken lines will be connected to each other.20250425_144759.jpg
  • Next we would create space for the breast pad and give allowance foe darting by taking 2" outwards after the nipple span measurement. The 2" will be taken from the underbust to the waistline. 20250425_143700.jpg
  • Next, using a French curve form your bust and connect it to the armhole. Note that the bustier is a princess dart bustier. In other to give the dress a fitting around the waist area we will have to make a dart from the waist to the full top length.

  • Next take the bodice measurements and cut it out. Then use the front piece to cut the back piece out and add zipper allowance of about 1½".
  • Then use the front and back pieces of the lace fabrics to cut out the lining and satin fabric. 20250425_145244.jpg
  • Now you will iron the hairstay on each of the pieces and join the pieces together using the sewing machine. Afterwards attach the sleeves to the armholes. 20250425_151635.jpg
  • Next attach the zip to the back piece. Then hem the sleevs and bottom edge of the dress for a clean finish.

  • For the wrapper, hem the four edges neatly and attach ywo ropes at the upper edge which will be used to stylishly tie it.
  • Give the dress a good press and it is ready to be delivered.
