Greetings, dear creative hivers. I wish everyone a wonderful new week. It's always exciting for me whenever I get the opportunity to share my sewing process with this wonderful community and also get to read about all of your lovely creations.
This time I made a Chic 'Blue me away' dress for my cousin Maureen who turned 20 yesterday, as expected, my phone didn't have peace as it kept buzzing every day two weeks before her birthday, I could feel the excitement and anticipation in her voice, I knew she is very eager to mark this birthday as she has always been talking about this birthday years before now, and also because it's sort of a double celebration for her as she also finished her national Diploma last month.
There is something about wanting to grow older fast and become that full adult, at this age, little do we know that as we get older, we will wish to go back to this age again, so I told her to make the best of this age as the decisions she makes from now henceforth can make or mar her future.
So how do you want your dress to look like, the very question she has been expecting me to ask her, she described wanting a wavy flare gown with a corset upper side and tiny straps which has a bow on top, as she explained, I made a sketch and yea she loved it, she also asked that I use a blue coloured fabric as that was her favorite colour, it's not hard to guess that she wants a chic kind of clothing.
Thinking about the fabric that would be suitable for this dress, I opted for a plain blue crepe fabric after checking out different fabrics at the fabric store, and it turned out just as I expected, looking chic and fabulous as you can see from the birthday photoshoots.
Without further ado, let's get right into the making process.
Cutting And Sewing Process
- I started by drafting the upper front pattern and also got her bra cup
- I drafted and cut out the back pattern as well too
- The base of the dress was cut using a 1440-degree flare, how I cut it was, by dividing her waist measurement by 6.28, then dividing the value I got by 4, then I made four circled flares with the value gotten, and the image above is what one flare looks like, then I sewed together all the four flares which makes together her full waist measurement, and fuller volume to the flare.
- I continued by sewing cases and boning inside the case of the corset upper side, I also covered the bra cup and sewed it to the corset base.
- I also fixed the case and boning to the back corset upper side and fixed eyelets where there rope will be used to tighten the dress.
Finally, I joined the upper and lower part of the dress by the waist, also made the bows that go above the strap, and using fabric glue, I attached rhinestones to the chest area, and here is the final beautiful look of Maureen's 'blue me away chic dress', that is how she felt when she fitted her dress for the first time.
It gives me great joy to be a part of the people's birthday celebration, making them feel special and beautiful on their special day.
