Buen lunes amigas de las agujas, por aquí me presento en este lunes que casi parece un renacer de las actividades que vengo teniendo por delante, pero en este nuevo comienzo, mientras miro el fin de año a pocos meses, les contaré distintas cosas, a la vez que me verán realizar trabajos de aprendizaje y otros también, de los que son un mimo al alma, como es el caso de hoy, ya demos comienzo por favor, a la magia que desbloquea una máquina de coser!
You may remember (or maybe not) that in March I was given a sewing machine, well, my happiness continued to grow. I'm not going to lie to you, at one point it was stressful, but very quickly I was able to figure it out and learn to sew, as I learn almost everything myself, self-taught. That's why I took advantage of this space to explore and learn, and today's story is going to be about a path I'm still traveling. We could say that while I'm learning something different, I'm adding to and helping with the work on this article, which is extremely useful for the murga, and you'll see why as we go along.

Quizás recuerden (o quizás no) que en Marzo me regalaron una máquina de coser, bueno, la felicidad siguió creciendo. No les voy a mentir, en algún momento fue un estrés adquirido, pero muy rápidamente pude desenvolverme y aprender a coser, como aprendo casi todo yo, de manera autodidacta. Well, the idea discussed with a colleague who helped me come up with it was to make something to cover the bass drums. Although there are some with a certain level of stitching, almost like a backpack, with zippers and waterproofing, pockets, etc., in short, a higher quality item. That wasn't the idea here, but rather to protect the wood of the bass drum as much as possible, without doing a crazy job. I still didn't know how to put in zippers when I started this. The specific idea was to make a strip of fabric and put foam rubber inside to prevent blows as well, looking for a way to cover the bass drum and not hinder the work of transporting them.

Bueno, la idea hablada con un compañero que me ayudó justamente a idearlo, era hacer algo para cubrir los bombos, que si bien existen algunos con un nivel de costura, casi como una mochila, cierre e impermeables, con bolsillos, etc. En fin, un artículo de calidad superior. La idea aquí no era esa, sino proteger lo más posible la madera del bombo, sin hacer un trabajo enloquecedor, yo aún no sabía colocar cierres cuando comencé con esto. La idea concreta era hacer una tira de tela y ponerle dentro gomaespuma para evitar golpes también, buscando cómo hacer que cubra el bombo y no entorpezca el trabajo de transportarlos.
When I went to buy the fabric, I discovered that faux leather, or eco-leather, was clearly much stronger and more resistant than the fabrics I had been using for testing, so it was essential to research needles and find out which would be best, so as not to break my needle or my machine. I got a lot of help here. How wonderful the world of sewing is! But at the same time, I made mistakes that I'm proud of, because I didn't know any better and now I know from experience.

Cuando fui a comprar la tela, descubrí que claramente la cuerina, o cuero ecológico, era bastante más fuerte y resistente que las telas que venía usando yo para probar, entonces fue clave indagar sobre agujas, y cuál sería la mejor, para no romper mi aguja, ni mi máquina. Aquí tuve mucha ayuda, qué hermoso es el mundo de la costura, pero a su vez, cometí errores de los que estoy orgullosa, porque no los sabía y ahora los sé por vivencia propia.
It was the first time I had changed the needle, and I was stressed and sweating profusely, as I lost one of them inside the machine and everything was terrifying for a few minutes. When I tried to pick it up with tweezers, clearly without success, I decided to be a little rough and turned the machine over, which, without any difficulty, dropped my needle. I laughed, but the learning moment is so engraved in me that I will never make that mistake again, although I will make others, haha.

Fue la primera vez que cambiaba la aguja y pasé por estrés y sudor de gota gorda en la frente, ya que perdí una de ellas dentro de la máquina y todo fue terror por unos minutos. Cuando intenté tomarla con una pinza, claramente sin éxito, decidí ser un poco bruta y di vuelta la máquina, quien sin ninguna dificultad, dejó caer mi aguja. Me reí, pero el momento de aprendizaje está tan grabado en mí que no volveré a cometer ese error, otros sí, jaja.
Since each drum has a different size, I tried to start with all the largest ones (24 inches) and make several of these. They measure almost 2 meters in circumference, but I made them from 1.80 cm to 1.90 cm. I used variations in the extra and missing centimeters because I then added elastic so that they could be placed on the drum and not move. They are all between 30 and 33 centimeters wide. That at least simplifies cutting the fabric because I don't have much space to spread out so much fabric and cut it calmly, but I was able to figure it out anyway.

Como cada bombo tiene una medida distinta, traté de comenzar con todos los más grandes (de 24 pulgadas) y hacer varios de estos, miden casi 2 metros de circunferencia, pero yo los hice de 1,80 cm a 1,90cm. Use variaciones en los centímetros de más y de menos, porque luego coloqué elásticos y de esa manera poder colocarlos en el bombo y que no se muevan. De ancho todos tienen entre 30 y 33 centímetros. Eso simplifica al menos el corte de la tela, porque no tengo tanto sitio donde expandir tanta tela y poder cortar tranquila, igual lo pude resolver también.
The reality of sewing is that it's not difficult, but I found straight stitching challenging. My biggest problem was with the tension of the machine, as some parts ended up looking almost like a die cut due to the number of tiny holes and pressure made by the needle, but I repeat, you learn from everything! Besides, there are so many drums that need covers that you can always keep improving.

La realidad de la costura es que no es difícil, pero a mi me fue desafiante la costura recta, mi mayor problema fue con la tensión de la máquina, ya que algunas partes quedaron casi como un troquel de la cantidad de agujeritos y presión que hizo la aguja, pero repito, de todo se aprende! Además, hay tantos bombos que requieren una funda, que siempre se podrán ir mejorando.
We bought fabric for approximately 12 drums. Right now, I only have two left to finish, but it took many long months to make them, and I had to bring them to each rehearsal little by little, considering that I couldn't bring all 12 at once. I was able to bring one, try it out, see how it fit, glue the foam rubber, check which drum it fit best on, and then continue with the smaller ones. In short, it's a never-ending job, and I always want to do better than the last one.

Compramos tela para aproximadamente 12 bombos, ahora mismo solo me quedan dos por terminar, pero fueron largos meses de hacer, y de llevar a poco a cada ensayo, considerando que tampoco podía llevar las 12 juntas. Tuve la posibilidad de llevar una, probar, ver, pegar la goma espuma, chequear a qué bombo le va mejor, y luego también continuar con los más pequeños. En fin, un trabajo que no termina, y que siempre querré hacer mejor que el anterior.
On the one hand, the project aims to cover the drums, and on the other, to prevent damage to the paintwork that is gradually being applied (this is a beautiful detail that I will show you later, but it is clear that it must be cared for, because it is a unique work replicated by hand on each drum). And also, if when loading them into a vehicle, something gets dirty or damaged by the tensioners, what we achieve is to save problems in the future.

Por un lado, el proyecto tiene como finalidad cubrir los bombos, por otro, que no se dañe la pintura que de a poco se está realizando (esto es un detalle hermoso que les mostraré más adelante, pero es claro que debe ser cuidada, porque es un trabajo único replicado a mano en cada bombo) Y además, si al momento de subirlos a un vehículo, algo se ensucia o se daña por los tensores, lo que logramos es ahorrar problemas a futuro.
The fabric turned out great, and we had to sew some elastic bands onto it. I had some really good ones in scraps that I put together, so we didn't have to spend any money on that, or on the fabric scraps. To make them shiny and murgueros, I think the task was accomplished successfully and joyfully!

Lo que resultó de la tela fue genial, y a esto hubo que coserle unos elásticos, yo tengo unos muy buenos en retazos que uní y no hizo falta que gastemos dinero en eso, igual que los sobrantes de tela, para que queden brillantes y murgueros, creo que la tarea fue lograda con éxito y alegría!
I loved the fabric. In the end, with the right needle, it's very easy to sew, and I loved the color too. Maybe there are too many photos in the explanation of this project, but it filled me with energy and everything seemed new and unique to me, worthy of being remembered and shared. And before I finish, the happiness this work gives me is immense, not only because of the ingenuity displayed, but also because of the teamwork I feel we achieved, which means that they are now protected, and that my friend's painting will endure over time.

La tela me encantó, al final con la aguja adecuada es muy simple de coserla, y el color también, quizás hay fotos de más en la explicación de este trabajo, pero es que me llenó de energía y cada cosa me parecía nueva y única, digna de recordar y ser compartida.
