Hello Hive and Creative needleworkers ๐Ÿ‘—๐Ÿ‘’๐Ÿ‘•๐Ÿ‘–๐Ÿ‘š๐Ÿ‘™๐Ÿ‘˜.

Traditional native caps are a very important aspect of our culture in Nigeria. Different tribes have their caps designed in different fashion and color.
Mere look at the color or types of cap one can decide from which tribe the wearer is from.

Least i forget to say Aso-Oke or ofi is our traditional woven fabrics used for making clothes in the olden times.

For this weeks needleworkMonday project i joined my boss @harlex in a collective work of learning how to make a traditional native cap from an Igbo origin.

This is the design for an Igbo cap, meanwhile in other post I have shown us in a similar fashion before how a traditional Yoruba cap was designed.

how to cut and sew a native cap

Okay to make this cap.

We need two distinct piece A straight rectangular cut for the cap height and the circle cut to cover the top of the cap.

Different materials can be used to add to the stiffness of the cap, for instance some people use thick collar stay while other prefer thick fibers.

In any case you can see the one we used in the pictures here.

The first piece cap height was cut in 12inches for the head circumference of the clients.
Then extra one inches was added for the overlap sewing ( this was cut on fold).

Both the Aso-Oke and the fiber was cut in the same way and measurement.

Next glue was used to hold the both overlaps of the cloth and fiber before it was placed round to get the circumference of the cap top that will be cut in circle as well.

To get the circle piece that covers the cap height, the cap circumference was placed round another fabric and traced out like this.

For the inner lining you may want to try different fabric color so the inside and out can be of different color.

Gum was used to glue the fabric and fiber together all through the edges down to the inside of the cap along side the linings as well.

The gluing part is a little technical as the cap ought to have a neat finishing both in and out.
This was all set in place and our traditional Igbo cap is ready.

Thank you for stooping by to see how our traditional native cap is designed.
