I’m not a very Christmassy person and I never decorate my home for the holidays. But this year, something shifted. I don’t know exactly what it was, but suddenly I felt the urge to change that reality a little bit. A little bit because I ended up making a very small decoration, but honestly, even that tiny effort made me feel like I had the biggest Christmas spirit in the world.
Since I didn’t want to spend any money, I challenged myself to use only what I already had at home. My idea was to create a mini crochet Christmas tree that could work as a table arrangement or simply sit on a shelf, which is what I ended up doing.
For the base, I used cotton T-shirt yarn, a size 10 crochet hook, and an empty T-shirt-yarn spool I had lying around. I crocheted a long cord using only chain stitches and measured it as I went to make sure it would wrap nicely around the spool. Then I rolled the cord around the base and glued everything in place with hot glue so it would stay secure.
Once that was done, it was time for the fun part: decorating. I used pink pom-poms and tiny green pom-poms I already had at home. I felt like it still needed a pop of color, so I wanted to add some red. Since I didn’t have any red pom-poms, I drew little red circles on paper, cut them out, and glued them onto the tree with hot glue.
The final step was finding something to place on top. My original idea was to add a star, but I didn’t have one, and I was too tired to make one from scratch. So instead, I used an illustration of my cat, Topo Augusto, that a friend had made for me. I glued a small stick to the back, placed it at the top of the tree, and honestly, I think it looked even better than a star would have.

It turned out beautiful, and original. I don't think I've ever seen a cat crowning a Christmas tree 😄.
