But now I can say that it is one of my favorite animated movies so far, so I will share my opinion about it with you.
So we have Chihiro who is barely ten years old. The little girl is on a long road trip since her parents decided to move to another city, which Chihiro does not like at all. She is quite moody despite the fact that her parents try to cheer her up a bit. Her father takes a shortcut that he has just discovered but this makes them find a mysterious tunnel which they decide to explore; The girl doesn't like the idea but when she sees that her parents enter anyways, she without hesitating runs to follow them.
On the other side they find a ghost town since only rubble remains. However, when exploring, her father thinks that it is more like an amusement park and that surely there are people in charge there. Trying to find them, they discover food stalls with dishes served, apparently freshly made. They call for someone to attend to them but no one comes. The two adults were too hungry to wait for what they start to eat. They would pay later when someone comes.
Chihiro prefers to continue exploring. As she walks, she runs into a boy around her age. He seriously tells her that she should run to find her parents and escape the place before it gets dark, she has little time left. Scared Chihiro runs to the restaurant but at the same time she realizes that out of nowhere everything begins to come to life, the lights come on and
Chihiro flees terrified and sees how the whole town is inhabited by spirits of all kinds. She also realizes that she doesn't know what to do as she sees that her body seems to be vanishing. The boy finds her again, his name is Haku and he offers to help her escape from that strange place.
The Characters
There are a lot of characters but I will focus on just a few:
Our little protagonist. She starts out as a somewhat spoiled child as well as immature, of course. But in this great adventure in the literally ghost town, Chihiro is going to grow up in a very short time. She will be exposed to so many tests that she becomes a brave, empathetic, responsible and much more mature little girl. On this magical journey she finds herself.
She is also a character that in her innocence is adorably funny, with jokes and comic reactions that I think is what brings the childish part of the story.
Despite working for the antagonist of the story, Haku cannot suppress his natural nobility. He is the one who helps Chihiro at all times because he is a good person and he wants her to be able to live free, not to be trapped in that place like him and so many others since this meant that Chihiro would forget her true identity, just as it happened to him.
Haku knew that he did not fit in that place, even less for the evil tasks entrusted by Yubaba, but he did not know who he really was or why he was there. Throughout the story he manages to remember who he is, finally feeling free because everything makes sense. I think this character conveys a certain message, something like you're not totally happy until you discover yourself, who you truly are.
A picturesque character. He gives Chihiro a job even though he shouldn't (orders from his superior). He seems to be the reasonable character of the story although he has a tough personality. He analyzes situations coldly and although somewhat grumpy he has a good heart. He is weird because of his appearance as an older man with six arms that makes him look like a kind of humanoid spider, also his personality is somewhat mysterious since he is a "man" of few words. He will also help Chihiro on her journey.
Another of the most curiously weird characters. No Face can create gold out of nowhere, he is also friendly with people he likes or has an interest on, as well as surprisingly he can imitate other people's characteristics such as body parts, voice, among others. But of course, this is achieved only if he first eats those people. Yes, he is some kind of cannibal spirit.
However the true nature of this character is not clear to me, I can't tell if he is good or evil since he finally becomes friends with Chihiro. I also can't say what his purpose is in the story, but what is certain is that he is very entertaining because of how strange the character is.
The "ying and yang". Yubaba is the antagonist, a greedy and narcissistic sorceress who will do whatever at anyone's expense in order to achieve the greatest possible benefit solely for herself. To guarantee this, her employees have no choice but to sign a contract where they can work for her in exchange for what they want to achieve, but little by little whoever signs will forget who they really are. A truly evil being.
Yubaba has a twin sister who is identical to her physically, but in personality she turns out to be kind. Zeniba contrary to her sister, although she is equally a sorcerer, she works for good, she is benevolent so she is always willing to help others. It's like having the bad witch and the good witch.
However, they are characters that I don't have much to say about, they seem quite common to me, although there is nothing wrong with that in this story since they fulfill their function, that is: Yubaba provides the reason for the continuity of the plot, her actions are the origin of the conflict in the plot. Zeniba is the "deus ex machina", the miracle that will help Chihiro to win.
My opinion
From every point of view Spirited Away is nothing more than the Japanese version of Alice in Wonderland, the premise is basically the same: “an immature girl who magically appears in a dreamland where she will live various extraordinary adventures that will make her grow. However, Spirited Aways's magic is on the Japanese culture, with the incorporation of mythological creatures such as yōkai (japanese ghosts or demons) in addition to the particular way of the Japanese when telling their stories, this is the way in which everything happens quickly as well as with that mystical aura.
Apart from the fact that the situations that the protagonist lives are strange to say the least. I know that Alice also experiences strange situations, but Chihiro is persecuted by a faceless creature, her parents are turned into pigs with no reasoning capacity, she works in a hot spring house for spirits... I mean, even though they both weird they are not the same. The Japanese are superior when it comes to weird stuff hahaha.
On the other hand, speaking of awards, this film is the only one with anime-style animation to win an Oscar for best animated film. It also won several other awards.
So I think it's fair to say that this movie is worth a lot to watch. Even though it's a bit long, it's so entertaining that you don't even realize. So I invite you to watch it at least once, it's really beautiful despite being a children's movie. I believe that anyone at any age can actually enjoy it.

Pero ahora puedo decir que es una de mis películas animadas favoritas por lo que les compartiré mi opinión
Tenemos a Chihiro de apenas diez años de edad. La pequeña se encuentra en un largo viaje en auto puesto que sus padres decidieron mudarse a otra cuidad, cosa que a Chihiro no le agrada en lo más mínimo. Está bastante malhumorada apesar de que sus padres intentan animarla un poco. Su padre toma un atajo que acaba de descubrir pero esto los hace encontrar un misterioso túnel al cual deciden entrar; a la niña no le gusta la idea pero al ver que sus padres entrar sin dudarlo ella corre a seguirlos.
Del otro lado encuentran un pueblo fantasma puesto que solo quedan escombros. Sin embargo al explorar el padre piensa que se trata mas bien de un parque de diversiones y que seguramente allí están personas encargadas. Intentando encontrarlos descubren puestos de comida con platillos servidos, aparentemente recién hechos. Llaman para que alguien los atienda pero no acude nadie. Los dos adultos estaban demasiado hambrientos como para esperar por lo que comienzan a comer. Después pagarían.
Chihiro prefiere seguir explorando. En su andar se topa con un chico más o menos de su edad. Este seriamente le dice que corra a buscar a sus padres y huya del sitio antes de que se haga de noche, le queda poco tiempo. Chihiro asustada corre al restaurante pero a la vez se va percatándose que de la nada todo comienza a cobrar vida, las luces se encienden y
Chihiro huye aterrorizada y ve como todo el pueblo está habitado por espíritus de todas clases. También se percata de que no sabe qué hacer así como ve que su cuerpo parece estar desvaneciéndose. El chico vuelva a encontrarla, su nombre es Haku y se ofrece a ayudarla a huir de aquel extraño lugar.
Los personajes
Hay un montón de personajes pero me centraré en sólo algunos:
Nuestra pequeña protagonista. Comienza siendo una niña un tanto malcriada además de inmadura, por supuesto. Pero en esta gran aventura en el pueblo literalmente fantasma Chihiro va a madurar en muy poco tiempo. Será expuesta a tantas pruebas que se convierte en una pequeña valiente, empática, responsable y bastante más madura. En este viaje mágico se encuentra a sí misma.
También es un personaje que en su inocencia resulta adorablemente graciosa, con ocurrencias y reacciones cómicas que creo que es lo que aporta la parte infantil de la historia.
Apesar de trabajar para la antagonista de la historia Haku no puede reprimir su nobleza. Él es quien ayuda a Chihiro en todo momento porque es una buena persona y desea que ella pueda vivir libre, que no quede atrapada en ese lugar así como él y tantos otros puesto que esto significaba que Chihiro olvidaría su verdadera identidad, tal como le pasó a él.
Haku sabía que no encajaba en aquel sitio, menos aún para las malvadas tareas encomendadas por Yubaba, pero no sabía quién era realmente ni porqué estaba allí. A lo largo de la historia logra recordar quién es, sintiéndose finalmente libre porque todo cobra sentido. Creo que este personaje transmite cierto mensaje, algo como que no eres totalmente feliz hasta que te descubres a ti mismo.
Un personaje pintoresco. Éste le da empleo a Chihiro apesar de que no debería hacerlo (órdenes de su superior). Parece ser e personaje sensato de la historia aunque de carácter duro. Analiza las situaciones en frío y aunque algo cascarrabias tiene buen corazón. Resulta curioso por su aspecto de señor mayor con seis brazos que lo hace parecer una especie de araña humanoide, además su personalidad es un tanto misteriosa puesto que es de pocas palabras. Él también ayudará a Chihiro en su viaje.
Otro de los personajes más curiosos. Sin Cara puede crear oro de la nada, también se muestra amigable con personas que le agradan o llaman la atención así como increíblemente puede imitar características de otras personas como partes del cuerpo, la voz, entre otras. Pero claro, esto lo logra si primero se come a esas personas. Sí, es una especie de espíritu caníbal.
Sin embargo la verdadera naturaleza de este personaje no me queda clara, no sé decir si es bueno o malo puesto que finalmente se hace amigo de Chihiro. Tampoco sé decir cuál es su finalidad en la historia pero lo que sí es cierto es que resulta muy entretenido por lo raro que es el personaje.
El «ying y el yang». Yubaba es la antagonista, una hechicera avariciosa y narcisista que hace lo que sea a costa de quien sea con tal de poder conseguir el mayor beneficio posible únicamente para ella. Para garantizar eso hace que sus empleados no tengan otra opción más que firmar un contrato donde podrán trabajar para ella a cambio de lo que desean conseguir, pero poco a poco quien firme irá olvidando quién es realmente. Un ser verdaderamente malvado.
Yubaba tiene una hermana gemela que es idéntica a ella físicamente, pero en personalidad resulta ser bondadosa. Zeniba contraria a su hermana aunque es igualmente hechicera ella obra para el bien, es benévola por lo que siempre está dispuesta a ayudar a otros. Es como tener la bruja mala y la bruja buena.
Sin embargo son personajes de los que no tengo mucho que decir, me parecen bastante comunes aunque esto no tiene nada de malo en esta historia puesto que cumplen con su función, es decir, Yubaba aporta la razón para la continuidad de la trama, es el origen del conflicto. Zeniba es el «deus ex machina», el milagro que ayudará a Chihiro a vencer.
Mi opinión
Bajo todo punto de vista El viaje de Chihiro no es más que la versión japonesa de Alicia en el País de las Maravillas, la premisa es básicamente la misma: «una niña inmadura que mágicamente aparece en un país de ensueños donde vivirá diversas aventuras extraordinarias que la harán crecer». Sin embargo, la magia de Chihiro está en la cultura japonesa, con la incorporación de criaturas mitológicas como los yōkai (espectros o demonios japoneses) además de la manera particular de los nipones al narrar sus historias, esto es la forma en la que todo ocurre rápidamente así como esa aura mística.
Aparte de que la situaciones que vive la protagonista son cuanto menos extrañas. Ya sé que Alicia también vive situaciones raras, pero es que Chihiro es perseguida por una criatura sin cara, sus padres de convierten en cerdos sin capacidad de razonamiento alguno, trabaja en una casa de aguas termales para espíritus... O sea, aunque extrañas no es lo mismo. Los japoneses en eso son superiores jajaja.
Por otro lado hablando de reconocimientos, esta película es la única con animación de estilo anime en ganar un Óscar a la mejor película de animación. También gano varios galardones más.
Así que creo que es justo decir que esta película vale la pena, de hecho mucho aunque sea un poco larga. La verdad es que es tan entretenida que no notas eso mientras la ves. Así que te invito a verla al menos una vez, es realmente hermosa apesar de ser una película para niños. Creo que cualquier persona a cualquier edad puede llegar a disfrutarla.

There was a time where I was addicted to this film. I suffered from very bad insomnia and struggled to sleep without background noise of some sort. I'm still a bit like this, but there week or so where only Spirited Away could send me to sleep. I'd make it to that part where she crosses the bridge, and that was it. I think it was something about the atmosphere; the music up to that point. All the gentle mystery.
Oh I can totally get what you mean about the gentle mystery, I get that feeling too. It's sort of relaxing because the mix of everything, the music, the animation, the story. Everything about it is too nice.
I hope it can still help you sleep and transmit you that same feeling.

El Studio Ghibli sin duda nos dejo las mas grandes y bonitas peliculas del mundo del anime, he visto muchisimas por no decir todas jajaja
Esta en particular es un clasico del cine japones, marco la infancia de muchos aunque admito que yo la vi siendo mas grande jaja
Me encanta con cuanto cariño la describes y destacas los personajes mas importantes o que mas te gustaron, sin duda es una excelente pelicula y muy entretenida, la version de Alicia japonesa jeje Haku es mi preferido, siendo tan noble y valiente 😍

Es que a cualquier edad se puede disfrutar de las pelis de Studio Ghibli. Son muy hermosas y pueden llegar al corazón del que sea.
Realmente le tengo mucho cariño a esta en particular porque fue la primera que ví aparte que es la que más me gusta, aunque «La Princesa Mononoke» es su rival en mi corazón jajajaja.
Creo que todos queremos a Haku, es mi personaje favorito.

Te agradezco mucho que le hayas dedicado tiempo al "viaje" . Yo la vi siendo ya mayor y me dejó cautivado. La he visto varias veces durante los últimos años y siempre me genera cierta inquietud, sin saber el por qué.
EN 2016 Hayao Miyakazi en Twitter decía sobre su película lo siguiente:
"cuenta la historia de una niña dubitativa que acaba haciendo frente a sus miedos y acaba encontrando la energía para vivir"
Quizás por eso me engancha tanto esta historia, porque con el lenguaje de los sueños narra un viaje que ya no recordamos o que todavía no hemos terminado.

Creo que esta es sin duda alguna una de las mejores películas animadas que existe, sin exagerar. Quizás es comparada con Alicia, pero yo pienso que logra profundizar mucho más que esa. Lo que madura Sen es increíble, sin duda es una de mis evoluciones de personaje favoritas.
No sabría no escoger qué punto es mi favorito en ella, la historia, la animación, el trabajo de los seiyuus, o la música, de verdad que todo es excelente.
Estoy totalmente de acuerdo contigo. Quizá Alicia fue un influencia pero por supuesto esta peli lleva las cosas a otro nivel, sobretodo con Sen.
Tampoco sé decir qué parte es mi favorita porque el conjunto de todo es lo que crea la magia de la historia.
