How To Make Unique Bookmarks

in Build-It5 years ago

One of our favorite things to do as a family is take a trip to the bookstore and just hang out enjoying some good books (and the train set that’s there for the kiddos!). Sadly, I never think to buy bookmarks for all of that reading! I am a hopeless sticky note addict, and years ago I began using sticky notes as bookmarks. Functional, yes, but not very pretty. And, besides, I never have sticky notes to write lists on if they are all stuck in books! Today, we changed all of that.

How beautiful is that?! And it was so quick, easy and cheap! I made ten bookmarks in just a few minutes with things I already had around the house.

Here’s what you need:

  • Contact laminate sheets (try an office supply, craft store or wal-mart)
  • Paper (I used some scrap-booking paper I already had)
  • Scissors or a spiffy cutting tool like the one in the picture (I think I spent about $10 at the craft store for it years ago!)

Here’s what to do:

Cut the paper into bookmark-sized strips (we did some short, some long, some thick, some thin…).

Carefully peel the backing off of a sheet of laminate, set it down sticky-side-up and arrange the pieces of paper at least 1/4 inch from the edges and with at least 1/2 inch between them.

Even more carefully, peel the backing off of a second sheet of laminate and smooth it sticky-side-down on the other piece. You will be sandwiching the paper inside. The best way that I’ve found to do this is to line up one corner and slowly smooth down the laminate as I go, to prevent wrinkles and air pockets. Once it’s on, firmly press down all over the laminate.

Use the scissors or cutting tool to separate each bookmark, then trim off the excess laminate to 1/8 or 1/4 inch from the paper.

Easy-peasy! Now we have several bookmarks, each.

Aren’t they adorable? And they will last for years, thanks to the laminate.
