Species of the genus Brachygastra form one of the common elements of the Neotropical social wasps fauna. The genus is widely distributed in Central and South America. Some of the species are: Brachygastra mellifica, Brachygastra augusti, Brachygastra bilineolata, Brachygastra azteca, Brachygastra lecheguana, Brachygastra moebiana, Brachygastra myersi, and Brachygastra scutellaris. Most species are black, with an abdomen colored with yellow stripes.
Las especies del género Brachygastra forman uno de los elementos comunes de la fauna de avispas sociales neotropicales. El género está ampliamente distribuido en América Central y Suramérica. Nests are quite variable, but are always arboreal and attached to plant structures (branches, leaves). The nest envelope has a "carton" appearance, is brown, brittle and composed of short chips or is composed of long, supple, gray fibers. The entrance is simple, sometimes aligned to form an internal passage between stories, or sometimes a long, vertical, peripheral slit, or there are multiple entrances arranged chaotically. The primary comb is rapidly built to full size, and may be planar or spherical. Secondary combs are attached underneath others, sometimes chaotic and start in several places in the gray nests, while they are orderly in the brown nests. A nest can reach a meter or more in length.

Species of the genus Brachygastra can form nests with very large colonies of up to 8000 adult wasps, among which up to 400 queen bees, 200 males and more than 7000 worker bees (uninseminated females) may be present. Queens to be larger than workers.

Among worker wasps it is common to find uninseminated individuals with ovarian development present. These individuals resemble queens in having somewhat developed ovaries, often with at least one mature egg, but unlike queens, they are uninseminated, and thus can produce males.

It is noteworthy that since workers are more numerous than queens, in a nest, about half of the mature eggs in the ovaries are from worker wasps, indicating a strong potential for worker egg-laying.

Hi, @crazy-bee. I enjoyed a lot, observing them, photographing them. If they don't get disturbed they don't attack. I have been stung and the pain is less than the sting of a bee.
