I was doing a tour on a mountain I frequent, on that mountain there is a cave.

As it was hot in the mountain, I decided to go down to the first room of the cave to feel the coldness of its environment. After a few minutes when I went towards the entrance of the cave, I saw a hunting wasp on the ground. The place is marked with a yellow arrow in the following photograph.
Como hacia calor en la montaña, decidí bajar a la primera sala de la cueva para sentir la frialdad de su ambiente. Transcurridos unos minutos cuando me dirigí hacia la entrada de la cueva vi en el suelo a una avispa cazadora. El lugar lo señalo con una flecha amarilla en la siguiente fotografía.
The wasp was very active and close to it were the remains of a millipede. This wasp belongs to the family Pompilidae which is characterized by the fact that the females hunt spiders as prey to lay their eggs, so that the larvae can feed on the arachnids later, and each hatched larva develops on a single prey.
La avispa andaba muy activa y cerca de ella se encontraban restos de un milpiés. Esta avispa pertenece a la familia Pompilidae que se caracteriza porque las hembras cazan arañas como presas para poner sus huevos, de tal forma que las larvas se pueden alimentar de los arácnidos posteriormente, y cada larva eclosionada se desarrolla sobre una sola presa.
The wasp probably belongs to the subfamily Pepsinae, tribe Pepsini and is of the genus Hemipepsis or Pepsis.
Es probable que la avispa pertenezca a la subfamilia Pepsinae, tribu Pepsini y sea del género Hemipepsis o Pepsis.
After mating, females actively seek out spiders to paralyze them with their stinger, lay an egg and transport them to safety, or after paralyzing their prey they transport it, excavate a cell or safe place and lay the egg. In the family Pompilidae, this behavior has many variants, some wasps lay the egg on the spider and leave it in the same place of encounter with the spider without transporting it to a safe place.

En la familia Pompilidae, este comportamiento tiene muchas variantes, algunas avispas colocan el huevo en la araña y la dejan en el mismo sitio de encuentro con la araña sin transportarla a un lugar seguro.
I tried not to scare the wasp away with my movement or by bringing the digital camera too close to it. The wasp only allowed me to capture a few photographs of it, the following is an enlargement of part of the previous photograph.
Traté de no ahuyentar a la avispa con mi movimiento ni acercándole mucho la cámara digital. La avispa solo me permitió capturarle algunas fotografías, la siguiente es una ampliación de parte de la fotografía anterior.

When the wasp left I captured the following two photographs, in the first one I indicate with my finger what I assumed could be the wasp's nest, and in the next one the hole of the nest seen from another angle.
Cuando la avispa se fue capturé la siguientes dos fotografías, en la primera indico con mi dedo lo que asumí podría ser el nido de la avispa, y en la siguiente el agujero del nido visto desde otro ángulo.
At first glance, the size of the wasp seemed moderate to me, according to the literature they can reach a length of between 3 and 5 centimeters; or even more. In addition to indicating with my finger the hole in the nest, the purpose of this photograph was also to subsequently measure part of my finger, in order to obtain the length of the wasp by means of a procedure I developed some time ago by matching image sizes. In the photograph in which the length of the wasp is best appreciated, the value I obtained was 35 millimeters (3.5 centimeters).
A la vista, el tamaño de la avispa me pareció moderado, según la literatura pueden alcanzar una longitud de entre 3 y 5 centímetros; o incluso más. Además de indicar con el dedo el agujero del nido el propósito de esa fotografía también fue el de posteriormente medir parte de mi dedo, para mediante un procedimiento que desarrollé hace tiempo igualando tamaños de imágenes, obtener la longitud de la avispa. En la fotografía en la que mejor se aprecia la longitud de la avispa el valor que obtuve fue de 35 milímetros (3,5 centímetros).

Muy interesante publicación sobre esta avispa, me impresiono su método para poner los huevos. En una oportunidad fotografié una avispa parecida a esta pero de color negro, que me pareció que tambien pertenecía a la tribu pepsini. Maravillosos insectos. Saludos

Yo he visto a estas avispas en documentales y me parece aterrador su método de utilizar a las arañas para que sus huevos eclosionen (debe ser una muerte lenta y terrible) pero así es la naturaleza ¿qué le vamos a hacer?

I often thought about mini camera traps for situations like that .. but unfortunately it sounds ds better than it is practical is most cases 😅
