Hello friends of Hive and Insects of the world.
In the middle of last month a rare and beautiful butterfly arrived.
Hola amigos de Hive e Insects of the world.
With the identification application I was able to find out its scientific name.
It belongs to the family papilionidae ("swallowtail" butterflies, "Parnassians"), subfamily papilioninae, tribe papilionini ("striated swallowtail" butterflies).
It is a male of Heraclides torquatus.
It measures about 80 millimeters in wingspan. The fore and hind wings are black with white bands. Hindwings have white, pink and blue crescent-shaped markings, most visible when closed. The body is black dorsally and white ventrally. The legs and antennae are black, the eyes are slightly blue.
They mostly inhabit humid lowland forests. As they are migratory, they can also be found in forests at more than 700 meters above sea level.
The larva mimics the shape of bird feces. It is brown speckled with white and yellow with an extensible organ that secretes a noxious pheromone to defend itself against ants. It feeds on citrus plants.
The chrysalis is dark brown with green and mimics a twig with a piece of lichen.
They fly from southern Mexico to Argentina and are relatives of the butterflies of the genus Papilio, from the Holarctic.
The genus Heraclides is
Batesian imitator of the genus Parides.
They show sexual dimorphism. The males fly in groups of 10 to 20 individuals along the watercourses and stop from time to time on the ground to suck mineral salts. They are easily disturbed. Females are rare.
