I greet you again, Insects Of The World community. I have returned today, March 21, 2023, to show you a curious visitor that came unexpectedly to my home, and I say that it is unexpected, because I usually observe insects in my internal garden and in the backyard or solar patio, but this time it reached the main door, the one facing the street.

My husband had gone out in the morning to do some shopping, but when he came back he found this beautiful insect, perched on the protective grill of the door, and he was surprised (as was I), because it is rare to see grasshoppers this big here, they are generally smaller and of an intense green color, and not this one, because it had different colors, shades and its morphology is very peculiar, to the point that it made me remember a story that my Aunt Chichita told me, about when the plague of lobster reached this area of the Venezuelan plains. She knew that story because her mother and grandmother told it to her, and as I remember, it happened at the beginning of the last 20th century, more than 100 years ago, when a terrible plague of locusts came to these areas and destroyed all the vegetation, leaving to the population without food, (remember that at that time there were no food marketing and distribution chains in my country, and people lived off what they produced in the fields). The truth is, my aunt told me that her grandmother and her mother at that time collected the seeds from the ground, (already stripped of shell and pulp), of the mamones (Melicoccus bijugatus), which was the only thing that the lobsters left behind. their passage, and those seeds were roasted, ground and then made a kind of bread or arepas, with which my family was able to survive that terrible famine that lasted months or weeks (I don't know for sure). It could be said that fortunately, the plague arrived in the time of mamones, and at least the seeds of these fruits remained, it was the only thing that these insects did not consume.

According to the bibliographic review (see links in the bibliography section of this post), this insect is characterized by:
They are invertebrate insects, (obviously) related to crickets, but it is another species. They correspond to the order Orthoperas.
Its size is variable, from one millimeter to 15 centimeters, just like the one that came to visit my house.
They have two pairs of wings, and two pairs of legs, the hind legs being the strongest and allowing them to jump long distances.
Its body is divided into head, thorax and abdomen, its hearing being located in the abdomen, and its sense of smell in its antennae, which as I saw, are not so long.
At the ends of their legs they have structures similar to hooks, which give them the ability to adhere to surfaces and catch their food.
Apparently they are herbivores, except that they have nothing to eat and then consume smaller insects.
Its vital period goes from 9 to 11 weeks.

When doing a more extensive bibliographical review, I found that they are also called locusts, which corresponds to a stage of development of grasshoppers. They are solitary, but a change in their behavior can occur and they become gregarious (they form very large and dense groups), and also migratory, that is, they move from place to place in search of food. I suppose this was what happened with the locust plague that my Aunt Chichita told me about; and this worried me, because although I saw only one insect, according to the description of colors, shapes and size, it corresponds to a specimen with gregarious habits, that is, a lobster

Here I end my post today, in which I wanted to share my observations, about a beautiful but worrisome insect, that came as a curious and unexpected visit to my home. Greetings.
