What is Tooth Carving?
It forms the basis of introduction to tooth anatomy, morphology and occlusion of primary and permanent teeth through practical approach.
Significance of tooth carving:
- Carving wax teeth will help develop hand-eye coordination and helps in identify tooth anatomy.
- Carving helps to fine tune one's skills in regards with shaping and contouring of tooth which will be essential in the future.
Basic Instruments:
- Wax.
- Wax Carver.
- Cotton.
- Scale.
Length of the Tooth:
Total length of the Maxillary Central Incisor is 23.5mm.
- Crown (length 10mm) &
- Root (length 13.5mm).
Procedure:
Take a wax block and mark the length of the crown at 10mm and root length is 13.5mm.
Draw a midline on the block and mark each site of the block like L= Labial Surface; P= Palatal Surface; M= Mesial Surface; D= Distal surface.
Crown Preparation:
Mark 3.5mm on both sides of the central line if the labial and palatal surface at cervical area (base of the crown) and 4.5mm at the top. Then connect those in line to make a shape like "Trapezoid". Remove the wax outside the lines. (Fig: 1)
Draw two horizontal lines (equal size) on the mesial surface and distal surface which will divide the surface into three parts. Cervically = Cervical one third, Medially = Mesial one third, Incisally = Incisal one third. (Fig: 2)
Mark another two horizontal lines (not equal, medially narrower) in the incisally which is also divide the surface into three parts. The mesial one is called incisal edge.
On the labial surface, make 'C' shape at cervical third and straight line connecting to the center of top of the incisal edge. On the palatal surface make 'S' shape that covers all three parts and connecting the bottom of the incisal edge. This to be done on both the side (Mesial & Distal surface). (Fig: 3)
Remove the wax outside the lines on Labial surface first and then move on to Palatal surface.
On the palatal surface, carve 'M' shape in the palatal fossa region with back end of the carver (scoop like end) by scooping out in straight following the margin on both side. The prominent part is called "Cingulum (a ridge about the base of the crown of the tooth)".
Also at this time round off the distal corner of incisal edge with cotton to replicate tooth anatomy.
Root Preparation:
Start with root carving by marking two lines from the cervical portion or cervical line of the crown to the baseline of root portion on LABIAL side. Remove the wax outside the lines.
Mark two lines from the cervical portion or cervical line of the crown to the baseline of root portion on MESIAL side. Remove the wax outside the lines.
Round off everything of the root by giving straight strokes and rotating tooth clockwise to make it "Conical" in shape. And with help of cotton do the finishing and polishing to get very smooth and polished surface.
At the end of the carving.
That's all for today. I am trying my best to show my creativity, so if you like my work give an upvote, and leave a comment about my post.
Good Luck to everyone. I wish, everyone will be fine.
