Hello friends! Today I share the process of making a small painting inspired by the wonderful novel Moby Dick, made from recycled materials.
Que tal amigos! El día de hoy comparto el proceso de la elaboración de un pequeño cuadro inspirado en la maravillosa novela Moby Dick, hecho a partir de materiales reciclados.
A few days ago I decided to resume and finish this little project I started a couple of months ago, which I had abandoned due to busy schedules and preparations for the birth of my daughters.
At that time I felt like drawing, so I decided to recover some dry cold paints and I had the idea of painting on a piece of MDF board (medium density fiberboard).
Hace unos días decidí retomar y culminar este pequeño proyecto que comencé hace un par de meses que había abandonado por ocupaciones y preparativos para el nacimiento de mis hijas.
En ese entonces tenia ganas de dibujar, así que se me ocurrió recuperar unas pinturas al frió que estaban secas y allí me surgió la idea de pintar sobre un trozo de tabla de MDF (fibropanel de densidad media).
A piece of MDF board (medium density fiberboard) of rectangular 35cm x 15cm.
An old wooden strip 50cm long.
Expired cold paints.
Water.
White glue.
Small C press.
Graphite pencil nº 2.
Brushes.
Un trozo de tabla de MDF (fibropanel de densidad media) de rectangular de 35cm x 15cm.
Un viejo listón de madera de 50cm de largo.
Pinturas al frío vencidas.
Agua.
Pegamento blanco.
Prensa C pequeña.
Lápiz de grafito nº 2.
Pinceles.
The first thing I did was to begin to make the sketch with the graphite pencil making clear lines and then when I was satisfied with the sketch I proceeded to highlight and darken the lines of the drawing and then apply the paint to the painting.
Lo primero que hice fue comenzar a hacer el boceto con el lápiz de grafito realizando lineas claras para luego al estar conforme con el boceto proceder a remarcar y oscurecer las lineas del dibujo para después ir aplicando la pintura al cuadro.
Once I finished the sketch I started to recover the dry paints for this I added a small amount of water to each container depending on the amount of paint that still contained each container and let them stand for a while so that the paints were hydrated, then I added a small amount of white glue to provide a little consistency to the paint.
Una vez culminado el boceto me puse a recuperar las pinturas secas para esto agregue una pequeña cantidad de agua a cada envase dependiendo de la cantidad de pintura que aun contenía cada envase y los deje reposar un rato para que las pinturas se fueran hidratando, después agregue una pequeña cantidad de pegamento blanco para brindarle un poco de consistencia a la pintura.
At this point I was mixing the paints to start applying the base colors of the painting, here I painted the base colors for the background, the whale, the boat and the harpoon, the sea waves and the fisherman's clothes and hair.
En este punto fui mezclando las pinturas para empezar a aplicar los colores base del cuadro, aquí pinte los colores base para el fondo, la ballena, el bote y el arpón, las olas del mar y la ropa y el cabello del pescador.
At this stage of the painting I was mixing the colors orange, yellow, brown and white to make the skin color to paint on the fisherman. I also retouched the base colors to start painting the small details of the characters like the fisherman's face and the whale's details.
En esta etapa de la pintura fui mezclando los colores naranja, amarillo, marrón y blanco para hacer el color piel para pintar en el pescador. Ademas fui retocando los colores base para comenzar a pintar los pequeños detalles de los personajes como el rostro del pescador y detalles en a ballena.
Hasta esta etapa fue que abandone este proyecto hace unos meses
Here I retake this painting a few days ago, again I had to perform the process of recovery of the paints with water and white glue as they had dried, it is worth noting that each time this recovery is done the paint is changing its tone or intensity.
Aquí retome esta pintura hace unos días, nuevamente tuve que realizar el proceso de recuperación de las pinturas con agua y pegamento blanco ya que las mismas se habían secado, vale destacar que cada vez que se realiza esta recuperación la pintura va aclarando su tono o intensidad.
Here I started to apply one more coat of paint to all the colors of the work, then I applied more details such as shadows, expression lines and detail lines on the boat.
Aquí comencé a aplicar una capa mas de pintura a todos los colores de la obra, luego fui aplicando mas detalles como sombras, lineas de expresión y lineas de detalles en el bote.
Once the painting was finished I found it a little difficult to detail the waves of the sea because I was not happy with the way they were turning out, so I was removing parts of them with black paint and repainting them again and again, it was trial and error several times until I painted the waves I felt more comfortable with.
I could say that it was the only stage that presented me with difficulty in this work.
Ya culminando la pintura me encontré con un poco de dificultad al momento de detallar las olas del mar ya que no sentía conforme como iban quedando así que fui quitando partes de las mismas con pintura negra y volviendo a pintarlas una y otra vez, fue varias veces ensayo y error hasta que pinte las olas con las que me sentí mas a gusto.
Podría decir que fue la única etapa que me presento dificultad en esta obra.
I cut two pieces of the old wood lath to glue to the frame at the top and bottom, using white glue and the C-press.
Corte dos trozos del viejo listón de madera para pegarlo en el cuadro en la parte de arriba y de abajo, para esto use pegamento blanco y la prensa C.
To finish, apply one more layer of paint to improve some colors and details in the paint.
Para culminar aplique una capa mas de pintura para mejorar algunos colores y detalles en la pintura.

Que gran cuadro has hecho, especialmente los protagonistas. Nada mejor que reutilizar madera para hacer estos trabajos.
