Sometimes we find inspiration in unexpected places and in this case it was while scrolling through the reels where an audio took me back in time and I remembered an old painting. Do you want me to show it to you?

El cuento comienza cuando andaba navegando en Instagram y encontré un audio que decía "One day or day 1" que no es más que la traducción de "Un día o el día 1" y esto del primer día me llevo justo a viajar veinte años atrás a una pintura titulada por mi familia como El dinosaurio.
The story begins when I was surfing on Instagram and I found an audio that said "One day or day 1" which is nothing more than the translation of "One day or day 1". "One day or day 1" and this first day thing took me right back twenty years to a painting titled by my family as The Dinosaur.
Desde 2004 más o menos mi madre comenzó a inscribirme en talleres de dibujo y pintura. Por supuesto siendo una niña y con los pocos conocimientos que supongo había adquirido hice esta pintura. Recuerdo que la imagen de referencia fue de un calendario chino, pero bueno este "dinosaurio" fue el resultado.
Después de ver este trend de Instagram decidí hacer una nueva versión de esta obra y traerla como mi dibujo número 9.

Since 2004 or so my mother started to enroll me in drawing and painting workshops. Of course being a child and with the little knowledge that I guess I had acquired I made this painting. I remember that the reference image was from a Chinese calendar, but well this "dinosaur" was the result.
After seeing this Instagram trend I decided to make a new version of this artwork and bring it as my #9 drawing.

The night before I did a quick sketch with new materials I was able to buy to start my new dinosaur the next day.

Uno de los nuevos materiales que compré fueron unos óleos pastel Premium de la marca Pointer. Estos creyones son una locura de cremosos y me encantaron por eso decidí hacer esta nueva versión con este material.
Te cuento que tampoco es que soy experta usando este tipo de creyones pero si he visto varios artistas que los usan de distintas formas y bueno una de ellas es la siguiente.

One of the new materials I bought were some premium oil pastels from Pointer. These crayons are crazy creamy and I loved them so I decided to make this new version with this material.
I'm not an expert in using this type of crayons but I have seen several artists that use them in different ways and one of them is the following.
Estos óleos los usan a veces en una base de color y no directo en el blanco del papel y a mi se me ocurrió hacer lo mismo. Sin pensarlo mucho le aplique unas dos capas de pintura acrílica azul a mi hoja y ahora si tenia la base para comenzar.
These oils are sometimes used on a colored base and not directly on the white of the paper and I thought of doing the same thing. Without thinking too much I applied two coats of blue acrylic paint to my sheet and now I had the base to start.
El boceto fueron lineas básicas que me sirvieron como guía para comenzar con el creyón rosa a hacer las flores.
The sketch were basic lines that served me as a guide to start with the pink crayon to make the flowers.

Te confieso que es bien difícil dibujar en una base de color, no sé como hacen los otros artistas para tener buenos resultados y puedo pecar un poco de envidia o frustración por sus trabajos, pero también te cuento que se me pasa rápido porque algo que he llegado a entender es que cada uno tenemos un proceso distinto y que al final todo es cuestión de práctica. Así que tengo que seguir practicando.

My reference image here was just the painting from 20 years ago and all the information my brain has stored in this time.
I confess that it is very difficult to draw on a color base, I don't know how other artists do to get good results and I can be a little envious or frustrated by their work, but I also tell you that I get over it quickly because something I have come to understand is that everyone has a different process and that in the end it's all about practice. So I have to keep practicing.
Y hasta aquí dejé este primer intento de rehacer la pintura, no me estaba gustando el proceso y por eso me costo para disfrutarlo pero como realmente quería hacer esta obra fui directo a un segundo intento.
And here I left this first attempt to redo the painting, I wasn't liking the process and that's why I found it hard to enjoy it but as I really wanted to do this work I went straight to a second attempt.

Como te decía, no me gusto la anterior así que cambie de pagina y esta vez si trabajando sobre fondo blanco comencé a dibujar, de nuevo.
As I said, I didn't like the previous one so I changed the page and this time, working on a white background, I started drawing again.
Decidí comenzar con el cielo para tener eso de base a la hora de ir dibujando las hojas de ese arbusto.
I decided to start with the sky to have that as a base for drawing the leaves of that bush.
Luego fue cuestión de ir haciendo trazos cortos en distintas direcciones con un verde claro para hacer la primera capa de arbusto, pues lo que continua es con un verde más oscuro hacer otros trazos que simulan las hojas por encima de la primera capa.
Then it was a matter of making short strokes in different directions with a light green to make the first layer of bush, then what continues is with a darker green to make other strokes that simulate the leaves above the first layer.
Hasta el momento me estaba gustando bastante el dibujo. Hice con rojo la forma de los pajaritos y para darle un toque un poco más real de arbusto agarre un marrón e hice unas lineas quebradas como si fueran pequeñas ramas.
So far I was really liking the drawing. I made with red the shape of the birds and to give it a more real touch of bush I grabbed a brown and made some broken lines as if they were small branches.
Para finalizar toco con el negro hacer la forma de la cabeza de los pajaritos y listo.
Finally, I use the black to make the shape of the head of the birds and that's it.
Y bueno ahora si terminé con esta interpretación de "El dinosaurio" de 2004, al final el primer intento me termino gustando que lo colgué de una vez en mi pared. También le mostré a mi familia las nuevas interpretaciones y les gusto bastante pero por supuesto que el original tiene ya terreno ganado en el corazón de todos nosotros.
Aún me falta mucho por aprender sobretodo de este material que me encanta tanto, todavía necesito seguir probando y experimentando así que si, voy a mostrarte más trabajos en óleo pastel.
Se sintió bastante bonito recordar esos primeros días en clases de arte y como desde pequeña he estado metida en algo que me gusta de verdad. Además del apoyo que siempre me ha brindado mi familia con el arte por más que la mayoría del tiempo no entienden mis garabatos.

And well now I am done with this interpretation of "The Dinosaur" from 2004, at the end the first attempt I ended up liking it so much that I hung it once and for all on my wall. I also showed my family the new interpretations and they liked it a lot but of course the original has already won ground in the hearts of all of us.
I still have a lot to learn about this material that I love so much, I still need to keep trying and experimenting so yes, I will show you more works in oil pastels.
It felt quite nice to remember those early days in art classes and how since I was little I have been involved in something I really like. Plus the support my family has always given me with art even though most of the time they don't understand my doodles.

Qué brutal ese efecto de los creyones óleo pastel, te leí decir cremoso y acercando las fotos se ve ese ligero relieve que dejan al pintar, la sensación al utilizarlos debe ser grandiosa!
O sea, veo demasiado al dinosaurio jajaja con qué cosas de uno se queda la gente. Súper bonito que hayas recordado esto y puedas tener guardados dibujos de esos inocentes inicios. Es una maravilla tu evolución y lo humilde que eres, diciendo todo lo que quieres mejorar luego de demostrar el buen trabajo que haces. Amiga, es usted toda una perfeccionista jaja.
A mí también me gustó el resultado con la base de color, en realidad ambas están preciosas y cada una transmite cierta personalidad distinta, jaja no sé como explicarlo pero son versiones que parecen transmitir algo diferente. Es admirable esa decisión de cambiar totalmente el dibujo hasta estar conforme, si de practicar se trata, vas muy bien encaminada.
