Hello dear friends, I hope you are all doing well. Today, Sunday, marks the beginning of Holy Week in many countries around the world, commemorating the death of Jesus. For Venezuelans, it's a week of vacation. I've taken advantage of this time to return to painting some larger acrylic paintings, in a portrait style. Here, I used an MDF board which I painted white before sketching a female face to paint. I'll briefly show you the process I used.
Hola queridos amigos, espero que todos se encuentren muy bien, hoy día domingo comienza en muchos países del mundo la Semana Santa, en conmemoración e la muerte de Jesús, para los venezolanos es una semana de vacaciones. Yo he aprovechado para volver a hacer pinturas acrílicas un poco más grandes, estilo retratos. Aquí he utilizado una madera MDF la cual pinté de blanco para luego hacer el boceto de un rostro femenino el cual pintar. Aquí les voy a presentar de forma breve el proceso de como lo hice.

Those who have followed my previous work know that I've been making miniature portraits for some time now. They're easier to create, although you need more patience when it comes to the details. So now, working on something a bit larger, I'll put my skills to the test again, this time with a portrait of a woman's face. After painting the MDF board white, I use a pencil to sketch the entire shape of the face, including her hair.
Para quienes han seguido mis anteriores trabajos saben que tengo tiempo haciendo retratos en miniatura, los cuales son más fáciles de hacer aunque cuando se trata de detalles se debe tener más paciencia. Así que ahora haciendo algo un poco más grande pues, volveré a poner a prueba mis habilidades, esta vez con un retrato de un rostro femenino. Luego de pintar la madera MDF de color blanco, con un lápiz voy haciendo toda la forma del rostro, incluyendo su cabello.

I began painting the center of the face, using a mix of colors for each area, especially for darker areas and those where the light reflection was a bit stronger. In this portrait, the light comes from the left side, with a clear tendency towards shadow on the opposite side. The brush I used in this first step was a round brush.
Comencé a pintar el centro del rostro, con una mezcla de colores para cada zona, especialmente para zonas oscuras y aquellas en donde el reflejo de la luz estuviera un poco más fuerte. En este retrato la luz viene del lado izquierdo, con una clara tendencia a la sombre del lado contrario. El pincel que utilizo en este primer paso es el pincel redondo.

Next, I worked on the eyes and their pronounced expression line, since the character is looking up and to the left. According to body language experts, this way of looking to the side means we are imagining something. Then I added the first base colors for the hair, something similar to the skin tone, from which I will continue adding more light and dark tones.
Seguidamente fue haciendo también los ojos y su marcada línea de expresión, ya que se encuentra mirando hacia arriba y a la izquierda, segun los estudiosos del lenguaje corporal, esta manera de mirar hacia un lado significa que estamos imaginando algo. Así luego voy agregando las primeras bases para el cabello, algo parecido al tono piel, a partir del cual seguiré agregando más tonos claros y también oscuros.

As I mentioned before, I start adding more tones to the hair, to make it a sort of blonde shade, but one that's obviously influenced by the environment. Next, I add some of the clothing she's wearing: a gray vest over a black flannel shirt.
Como había dicho anteriormente, comienzo a agregar más tonos para el cabello, para hacerlo de alguna manera un tono rubio pero que obviamente esté influenciado por el ambiente donde está. Seguidamente agrego parte de la ropa que tiene puesta un chaleco de color gris sobre una franela de color negro.

Then I add everything I think is necessary to the hair, like small highlights that appear above the face, as well as the darker areas, which helps to better appreciate the hair's volume. Another important detail is the background, where I add a nighttime cityscape with some trees at the top, and that's how it's finished.
Luego voy haciendo todo lo que opino necesario en el cabello como pequeños destellos de loz, y que estos puedan verse encima del rostro, así también las partes más oscuras, con esto el volumen del cabello se puede apreciar mejor. Otro detalle importante es el fondo, donde agrego un paisaje de ciudad nocturna con algunos árboles en la parte superior, y así queda finalizado.
What did you think of the final result? I don't particularly enjoy doing realistic portraits, but I do like them to capture the essence of the person. I like to express my own style, and I believe that every painter has their own way of feeling comfortable with what they do. There are other techniques I'd like to explore, and I hope I can learn them, like painting with a palette knife, which I've found very ingenious for creating textures, and I know it would look fantastic on faces. ¿Qué les ha parecido el final? no me gusta mucho hacer retratos realistas, pero si que conserven la esencia de la persona, me gusta imprimir mi propio estilo y creo que cad apintor tiene su propia forma desentirse a gusto con lo que hace. Hay otras técnicas que me gustaría explorar, espero poder aprenderlas, como pintar con espátula, algo que he visto muy ingenioso para lograr texturas y se que con rostros quedaría genial. Por ahora me despido y será hasta muy pronto.

The result is pretty awesome! It looks beautiful, and the texture created by those paints makes it look way more interesting than a drawing done with colored pencils. The hair looks amazing!
