A Physical HIVE Wallet
For some time now, I've had the idea of building a small, secure storage solution for all the cards you carry around with you. Sure, you can buy something like this, but I prefer to build things like this myself. On the one hand, the satisfaction is greater when you make something yourself and on the other hand, I then have a unique item in my hands.
Schon seit längerer Zeit hatte ich die Idee, eine möglichst kleine, sichere Aufbewahrungsmöglichkeit für all die Karten, die man so mit sich rumschleppt, zu bauen. Sicher, man kann so etwas auch kaufen, aber ich baue solche Sachen lieber selbst. Einerseits ist die Befriedigung größer wenn man etwas selbst herstellt und andererseits halte ich dann ein einzigartiges Exemplar in den Händen.
Rather by chance, I discovered a wallet called "TheSummit" on Thingiverse. At first glance, the thing looked pretty cool. At second glance, it also looked like it would fulfil my needs and work well. I then made my HIVE wallet based on this design. I then looked for other wallets, but they either didn't offer enough space for the 12 cards I currently have in my wallet or they just didn't look that cool.
Eher zufällig entdeckte ich bei Thingiverse eine Wallet namens "TheSummit". Auf den ersten Blick sah das Ding ziemlich cool aus. Auf den zweiten Blick sah es auch so aus, als würde das auch meine Bedürfnisse erfüllen und gut funktionieren. Auf Basis dieses Designs habe ich dann meine HIVE Wallet hergestellt. Ich hatte dann zwar noch gezielt nach weiteren Wallets gesucht, diese boten aber entweder nicht genug Platz für die aktuell 12 Karten in meiner Geldbörse oder sie sahen einfach nicht so cool aus.

The design is very flexible. The covers can be attached with screws or glued. The base parts can be printed in different thicknesses. The elastic band with the clip for banknotes can be omitted. You can print the parts in different colours, as I did with my HIVE wallet. The clip is also available in different versions, for example for attaching a smart tag. As the 3D models for the different parts are quite simple, you can also create them yourself in a short time and thus customise them to your own requirements. Extensions are also easy to implement, such as the compartment for coins, which I have included. This is not part of the original design. A compartment for individual keys or other small items would also be conceivable. As the covers can also be glued, you can also use other materials such as leather, wood or aluminium. I have also built a very thin version with leather covers without an elastic band for banknotes. Next I will try my hand at making covers out of wood.
Das Design ist sehr flexibel. Man kann die Cover mit Schrauben befestigen oder verkleben. Die Basisteile kann man in verschiedenen Dicken drucken. Das Gummiband mit der Klammer für Geldscheine kann man weglassen. Man kann die Teile in verschiedenen Farben drucken, so wie ich das bei meiner HIVE Wallet gemacht habe. Auch die Klammer gibt es in verschiedenen Varianten, zum Beispiel zum befestigen eines Smart Tags. Da die 3D Modelle für die verschiedenen Teil recht einfach sind, kann man diese auch in kurzer Zeit selbst erstellen und somit nach Belieben an die eigenen Bedürfnisse anpassen. Auch Erweiterungen sind einfach umzusetzen, wie das Fach für die Münzen, welches ich mit eingebaut habe. Dieses ist nicht Teil des Originaldesigns. Auch ein Fach für einzelne Schlüssel oder andere kleine Dinge wäre denkbar. Da die Cover auch verklebt werden können, kann man auch andere Materialen verwenden, wie Leder, Holz oder Aluminium. Eine sehr dünne Variante mit Covern aus Leder ohne Gummiband für Geldscheine habe ich ebenfalls gebaut. Als nächstes werde ich mich mal an Covern aus Holz versuchen.

In addition to the two base parts from the 3D printer, you will need the two covers, either also from the 3D printer or made from another material, as well as approx. 40 cm of 25 mm wide elastic band. If you want to screw the covers together, you will also need 14 M3 x 4 mm screws. The rubber band is sewn together and is then placed between the base and the cover. The assembly, including cutting and sewing the elastic bands, took about half an hour. Printing all the parts took about 3 hours. I used black PCTG for the cover of the HIVE Wallet. This stuff has a very high mechanical strength, much higher than PLA or PETG. However, high temperatures are required to print PCTG, between 260 and 270 °C at the nozzle, and the bed should be heated to at least 100 °C, preferably 110 °C. With some printers, these high temperatures cannot be controlled. Most PEI magnetic printing beds, which are so terribly popular, can only tolerate a maximum of 70°C. At higher temperatures, the adhesive with which the PEI film is bonded dissolves. I printed the base parts from red Extrudr NX2, a matt PLA. As you can see in the photos, this was not the best idea when using screws. The material cracked in some places. This has no influence on the stability, but it looks like crap.
Neben den beiden Basis Teilen aus dem 3D Drucker benötigt man die beiden Cover, entweder auch aus dem 3D Drucker oder aus anderem Material sowie ca. 40 cm 25 mm breites Gummiband. Wenn man die Cover verschrauben will braucht man noch 14 Schrauben M3 x 4mm. Das Gummiband wird zusammen genäht und kommt dann zwischen Basis und Cover. Das Zusammenbauen inkl. zuschneiden und nähen der Gummibänder hat ungefähr eine halbe Stunde gedauert. Der Druck aller Teile hat ungefähr 3 Stunden gedauert. Für die Cover der HIVE Wallet habe ich schwarzes PCTG verwendet. Das Zeug ist mechanisch sehr hoch belastbar, wesentlich höher als PLA oder auch PETG. Allerdings sind zum drucken von PCTG hohe Temperaturen erforderlich, an der Düse zwischen 260 und 270 °C, das Bett sollte auf mindestens 100°C geheizt werden, besser auf 110 °C. Mit einigen Druckern lassen sich diese hohen Temperaturen nicht steuern. Die meisten, so schrecklich beliebten PEI Magnetdruckbetten vertragen nur maximal 70°C. Bei höheren Temperaturen löst sich der Klebstoff, mit dem die PEI Folie verklebt ist. Die Basis Teile habe ich aus rotem Extrudr NX2, einem mattem PLA, gedruckt. Wie man in den Fotos erkennen kann war das nicht die beste Idee wenn man Schrauben verwendet. An einigen Stellen ist das Material gerissen. Auf die Stabilität hat das zwar keinen Einfluss, es sieht aber Kacke aus.

Unfortunately I didn't have a suitable elastic band. So I had to cut 30mm wide tape to size. That wasn't the coolest idea either. It also looks pretty rubbish in some places. I then got some suitable elastic band. The second wallet looked much better.
Leider hatte ich kein passendes Gummiband. Ich musste also 30mm breites Band zurecht schneiden. Das war auch nicht die coolste Idee. Das sieht an einigen Stellen auch ziemlich Kacke aus. Ich hab dann passendes Band besorgt. Die zweite Wallet sah dann schon viel besser aus.
I printed the HIVE logo separately and then stuck it on the cover. I would usually print this on the cover as well, but this is hardly possible with the PCTG. As the print bed is 110°C, the PLA I used for the logo would not set and would run. PLA melts at 80°C.
Das HIVE Logo habe ich separat gedruckt und dann auf das Cover geklebt. Ich würde das gewöhnlicherweise mit auf das Cover drucken, allerdings ist das mit dem PCTG kaum möglich. Da das Druckbett 110°C heiß ist, würde das PLA, welches ich für das Logo verwendet habe, nicht fest werden und verlaufen. PLA schmilzt bei 80°C.

Das geht auch mit einer Karte. Das Maximum hab ich allerdings noch nicht getestet. Vielleicht passen auch 20 rein. 😂

I like it a lot. That plastic logo seems like a 3D rendering. And you have some space for your cards, plus it looks very interesting. Re-purposing image and the signifiant (like in artistic Linguistics - Saussure)
