Organic Holster

I used the bad weather of the last few days to sew myself a leather holster. It holds a Leatherman Wave, a holder for various bits for the Leatherman and an Emisar D4V2 torch. Everything the light painter needs on the road. You can also hang the things in individual holsters on your belt, but I find it much more comfortable in a holster. The holster should fit as snugly as possible on my shapeless body and not stick out too far from the belt so that I don't get stuck somewhere with the equipment all the time.

Ich habe das schlechte Wetter der letzten Tage genutzt um mir ein Holster aus Leder zu nähen. In diesem haben ein Leatherman Wave, ein Halter für verschiedene Bits für den Leatherman und eine Emisar D4V2 Taschenlampe Platz. Alles was der Lightpainter unterweges braucht. Man kann zwar die Sachen auch in einzelnen Holster an den Gürtel hängen, aber in einem Holster finde ich das wesentlich komfortabler. Das Holster sollte möglichst bequem an meinem unförmigen Körper sitzen und auch nicht zu weit vom Gürtel abstehen damit ich nicht dauernd irgendwo mit dem Geraffel hängen bleibe.

Day 1

First I thought about how I wanted to arrange the three tools in the holster and made a sketch. In the end, I didn't use the sketch for cutting, but it was useful for the approximate size.

Zuerst überlegte ich wie ich die drei Tools im Holster anordnen will und machte eine Skizze. Letztendlich habe ich die Skizze zwar nicht zum Zuschneiden verwendet, aber für die ungefähre Größe war das schon nützlich.

I cut the two pieces of leather slightly larger than the pattern. The shape did not yet correspond to the finished holster. For other work I usually cut the pieces in the final shape and size right away. But these works are then only for a tool or a torch. Here, however, I wasn't sure whether everything would actually fit in the end.

Ich schnitt die zwei Lederstücken etwas größer als die Vorlage zu. Die Form entsprach noch nicht der des fertigen Holsters. Bei anderen Arbeiten schneide ich die Teile meist gleich in der endgültigen Form und Größe zu. Aber diese Arbeiten sind dann nur für ein Werkzeug oder eine Taschenlampe. Hier war ich mir allerdings nicht sicher, ob das dann am Ende tatsächlich alles passt.

I put the leather for the top of the holster in water for 15 minutes. I wrapped the three tools in cling film. Then I fastened the leather over the tools with a stapler on a wooden board. It was important that the holes pierced in the leather by the staples were as close as possible to where the seam would be later.

Ich legte das Leder für das Oberteil des Holsters für 15 Minuten ins Wasser. Die drei Tools wickelte ich in Frischhaltefolie ein. Dann befestigte ich das Leder über den Tools mit einem Tacker auf einen Holzbrett. Dabei war es wichtig, dass die Löcher, die durch die Tackernadeln ins Leder gestochen wurden, möglichst dort sind, wo später die Naht sein würde.

Day 2

After about 24 hours, the leather had dried and taken on the shape needed to hold the tools as securely as possible. I glued the two halves together and cut the final shape.

Nach ungefähr 24 Stunden war das Leder getrocknet und hatte somit die Form angenommen um die Tools möglichst sicher zu halten. Ich verklebte die beiden Hälften miteinander und schnitt die endgültige Form zu.

For colouring I used wood stain in three different shades (cherry, walnut and black). I apply the colour in different places to have a special look that fits the idea of the "organic" holster better than a single, clean colour.

Zum Färben verwendte ich Holzbeize in drei verschiedenen Farbtönen (Kirsche, Nussbaum und Schwarz). Ich truge die Farbe an verschiedenen Stelle auf um einen besonderen Look zu haben der zur Idee des "organischen" Holsters besser passt als eine, einzlene, saubere Farbe.

Wood stain has a distinct advantage over professional leather paint. Wood stain costs only a fraction and works almost as well.

Holzbeize hat gegenüber professioneller Lederfarbe ein ganz entscheidenen Vorteil. Holzbeize kostet nur einen Bruchteil und funktioniert fast genauso gut.

Day 3

The next day the holster was dry. I first marked the position of the seam. To have an even distance I then marked the position of the stitches with a seam roller.

Am nächsten Tag war das Holster trocken. Ich markierte zuerst die Position der Naht. Um einen gleichmäßigen Absand zu haben markierte ich dann die Position der Stiche mit einem Nahtroller.

I then used a sword awl to poke the holes in the leather at the marked points. The holes are not round. I poked the holes at an angle of about 45°. I use an awl with a flattened handle. This makes it easier to always hold the awl at the same angle.

Mit einer Schwertahle stach ich dann die Löcher an den markierten Stellen ins Leder. Die Löcher sind nicht rund. Ich stach die Löcher im Winkel von ca. 45°. Ich verwende eine Ahle mit abgeflachtem Griff. Damit ist es einfacher die Ahle immer im gleichen Winkel in der Hand zu halten.

To make it easier to thread the waxed yarn into the eye of the saddler's needle, it is advisable to cut the yarn at an angle. I use a very sharp Japanese leather knife for this.

Um das gewachste Garn einfacher in die Öse der Sattlernadel einfädeln zu können, empfiehlt es sich, das Garn schräg anzuschneiden. Dafür benutze ich ein sehr scharfes, japanisches Ledermesser.

A saddler's seam is sewn with two needles. There is therefore no top and bottom seam as with a sewing machine. The top and bottom seams alternate with each stitch. The waxed thread knots in the eyelets. A saddler's seam is therefore much more durable than a machine seam. If the seam is damaged in one place, the rest of the seam remains as stable as before. There is no machine that can produce a seam like this. It can only be done by hand.

Eine Sattlernaht wird mit zwei Nadeln genäht. Es gibt somit keine Ober- und Unternaht wie bei einer Nähmaschine. Bei jedem Stich wechseln die Ober- und Untenaht. In den Löschern verknotet sich das gewachste Garn. Eine Sattlernaht ist somit wesentlich haltbarer als eine Maschinennaht. Wenn die Naht an einer Stelle beschädigt wird, bleibt der Rest der Naht genauso stabil wie zuvor. Es gibt keine Maschine, die eine derartige Naht herstellen können. Das geht nur in Handarbeit.

At the end of the seam I sew back a stitch, cut the yarn and fuse the ends with a lighter. As a German, I would actually have to sew back at least three stitches. I hope I won't be deprived of my citizenship now. 🤣

Am Ende der Naht nähe ich einen Stich zurück, schneide das Garn ab und verschmelze die Enden mit einem Feuerzeug. Als Deutscher müsste ich eigentlich mindestens drei Stiche zurück nähen. Ich hoffe, mir wird jetzt nicht die Staatsbürgerschaft aberkannt. 🤣

And this is how the finished seam looks on the front and back.

Und so sieht dann die fertige Naht auf der Vorder- und Rückseite aus.

Then I punched the holes for the belt in the holster with a punch. Unfortunately I don't have a punch in the right size. So I had to "extend" the first hole by punching a second hole in the leather. This is not so easy because there is a risk of not getting the right position and angle. Without practice and experience, I would have punched the holes in the leather before sewing. I use a non-rebound nylon hammer for this and put the leather on a wooden block.

Danach schlug ich mit einem Locheisen die Löcher für den Gürtel in das Holster. Leider habe ich kein Locheisen in der passenenden Größe. Ich musste also das erste Loch "verlängern" in dem ich ein zweites Loch ins Leder schlug. Das ist nicht ganz so einfach weil die Gefahr besteht, dass man nicht die richtige Position und den richtigen Winkel erwischt. Ohne Übung und Erfahrung hätte ich die Löcher vor dem Nähen ins Leder geschlagen. Ich benutze einen rückschlagfreien Hammer aus Nylon dafür und packe das Leder auf einen Holzklotz.

After a pause and loud swearing; I had hit my thumb with the beautiful nylon hammer; I polished the edges of the leather. The "professional" uses special liquid from a well-stocked specialist shop for this. I have no idea what's in these little bottles. Judging by the price, it's virgin's blood or something. Many years ago, an old master saddler told me what he used to seal and polish the leather edges. He mixed wood glue with water in a ratio of 1:4. And that's exactly what I do. The liquid in the bottle is enough for another 10 such holsters. The price is 1 or 2 cents. For smaller parts, you can also moisten the leather edge with spit. For larger pieces, like this one, however, it is very laborious and tedious. But it costs exactly nothing.

Nach einer Pause und lautem Fluchen; ich hatte mir mit dem schönen Nylonhammer auf den Daumen geschlagen; polierte ich die Kanten das Leders. Der "Profi" verwendet dafür spezielle Flüssigkeit aus dem wohlsortierten Fachhandel. Ich hab keine Ahnung was in diesen kleinen Flaschen drin ist. Dem Preis nach zu urteilen Jungfrauenblut oder so. Vor vielen Jahren hat mir ein alter Sattlermeister verraten womit er die Lederkanten versiegelt und poliert. Er mischte Holzleim mit Wasser im Verhältnis 1:4. Und genauso mache ich das auch. Die Flüssigkeit in der Flasche reicht für noch 10 solcher Holster. Der Preis dafür liegt bei 1 oder 2 Cent. Für kleinere Teile kann man die Lederkante auch mit Spucke befeuchten. Bei größeren Teilen, wie diesem, ist das allerdings sehr mühselig und langwierig. Kostet dafür aber genau gar nichts.

Finally, I applied some leather care. The stuff consists of beeswax and grease. If I don't forget, I put some more of this stuff on the leather once or twice a year.

Zum Schluss habe ich noch etwas Lederpflege aufgetragen. Das Zeug besteht aus Bienenwachs und Fett. Wenn ich es nicht vergesse, kommt ein- oder zweimal im Jahr wieder was von dem Zeug auf das Leder.

Now that I see the photo, maybe I should give the belt a little care. 🤣😂

Wo ich jetzt das Foto so sehe, sollte ich dem Gürtel vielleicht auch mal etwas Pflege angedeihen lassen. 🤣😂

The holster took about 30 hours to make. The material cost about 25€. The holster is unique. I could not reproduce it. I wouldn't do that either because of the amount of work involved. But instead, a unique piece of handicraft now hangs on my belt and will hopefully serve its purpose for many years.

In dem Holster stecken ungefähr 30 Arbeitstunden. Das Material hat ungefähr 25€ gekostet. Das Holster ist ein Unikat. Ich könnte das nicht reproduzieren. Das würde ich auch wegen des hohen Arbeitsaufwand nicht machen. Aber dafür hängt jetzt ein einmaliges Stück Handarbeit an meinem Gürtel und erfüllt hoffentlich viele Jahre seinen Zweck.

Light painting is a unique form of art. The darkness is illuminate by the artist with diverse light sources and light traces are paint into the picture with various light tools. Various techniques are use, such as camera rotation or other movements of the camera during the exposure. The creative possibilities are almost unlimited. All the pictures were taken during one single exposure. Apart from denoising, sharpening, cutting and possibly adjusting the white balance, the pictures are not processed on the computer.
