Luffa acutangula, commonly known as the ridged gourd, angled gourd, or Chinese okra, is a flowering vine species in the cucumber family (Cucurbitaceae). Here’s a bit more about its flowers. The flowers of Luffa acutangula are typically bright yellow and about 4-5 cm in diameter. They have five rounded petals that give them a star-like appearance. Luffa acutangula plants have both male and female flowers. Male flowers are more abundant and are usually found in clusters, while female flowers grow singly and have a small, undeveloped gourd visible beneath the petals. These flowers rely on insect pollinators, primarily bees, to transfer pollen from the male to the female flowers for fertilization. They typically bloom in warm weather, usually during late spring to early autumn, depending on the climate.Luffa flowers are lovely to observe and crucial for the production of the ridged gourd, which eventually matures into the fibrous, sponge-like material used in scrubbing sponges when dried.
