[Zingtober] Day 21 - Blast

Hello everyone! I’m Lorentm, a digital artist passionate about creating stories through light, shadow, and expression. I’m very happy to welcome you once again to my art blog and to share with you my latest digital piece inspired by one of the characters from @holozing. Every new creation is an opportunity to explore new emotions and ideas, and I’m thrilled to be part of this year’s inktober challenge organized by holozing, known as Zingtober.

This artwork represents my participation for day 21 of the challenge, where the keyword is “Blast.” For this prompt, I decided to portray Xolo, a character who always sparks curiosity and energy. I imagined him in a comical and chaotic situation, just moments after an explosive accident, turning his wild fur and startled eyes into the heart of the scene.

While I was working on it, I wanted to capture that classic cartoon feel — the kind of humor where the character’s misfortune becomes endearing. I couldn’t help but think of the coyote from the Road Runner series, who always finds himself in hilarious trouble after his inventions backfire. That spirit of resilience, mixed with absurd comedy, felt perfect for Xolo.

I want to thank @acidyo and @holozing for constantly supporting my work and inspiring me to keep creating. Their encouragement means a lot and continues to motivate artists like me to grow and share our art with the community.

Hola a todos. Soy Lorentm, una artista digital apasionada por crear historias a través de la luz, la sombra y la expresión. Me alegra mucho darles la bienvenida una vez más a mi blog de arte y compartir con ustedes mi más reciente obra digital inspirada en uno de los personajes de @holozing. Cada nueva creación es una oportunidad para explorar emociones e ideas, y me entusiasma ser parte del reto de inktober de este año organizado por holozing, llamado Zingtober.

Esta obra representa mi participación para el día 21 del reto, cuya palabra clave es “Blast”. Para esta palabra decidí representar a Xolo, un personaje que siempre transmite curiosidad y energía. Lo imaginé en una situación cómica y caótica, justo después de un accidente explosivo, con el pelaje alborotado y una expresión de asombro que se convierte en el centro de la escena.

Mientras trabajaba en la pieza, quise capturar esa esencia de los dibujos animados clásicos, ese tipo de humor donde la mala suerte del personaje resulta entrañable. No pude evitar pensar en el coyote del Correcaminos, que siempre termina envuelto en situaciones disparatadas tras el fallo de sus inventos. Ese espíritu de resiliencia mezclado con comedia absurda me pareció perfecto para Xolo.

In this monochromatic piece, Xolo stands at the center of a smoky and chaotic moment. His fur is completely frizzed out, his eyes wide with shock, and his body stiff as he tries to process what just happened. The stick he was using to trigger the dynamite is still in his paws, and the ground beneath shows a dark, burnt mark — a classic cartoon aftermath.

Behind him, the stone wall adds a strong sense of setting. The rough texture of the rocks and the smoky marks on the surface reveal the force of the blast. Light and shadow interact across the wall, emphasizing the intensity of the moment and making it feel alive, as if smoke still lingers in the air. The grayscale tones give the scene that nostalgic, old-school animation feeling.

En esta obra monocromática, Xolo se encuentra en el centro de un momento lleno de humo y caos. Su pelaje está completamente erizado, sus ojos abiertos muestran sorpresa, y su cuerpo rígido intenta asimilar lo que acaba de suceder. La vara que usaba para accionar la dinamita sigue entre sus patas, mientras el suelo bajo él muestra una mancha oscura y quemada, el clásico resultado de un accidente caricaturesco.

Detrás de él se aprecia una pared de piedra que aporta una fuerte sensación de entorno. La textura rugosa de las rocas y las marcas de humo en la superficie revelan la fuerza de la explosión. La luz y la sombra se mezclan sobre la pared, destacando la intensidad del momento y dando vida a la escena, como si el humo aún flotara en el aire. Los tonos en escala de grises aportan esa atmósfera nostálgica de animación clásica.

Process / Proceso

The piece began with a rough sketch where I focused on Xolo’s pose and expression. I wanted his shock to feel authentic and slightly funny — the kind of exaggerated surprise you’d see in an old cartoon. His wide eyes and raised fur were essential to communicating the aftermath of the blast.

La obra comenzó con un boceto donde me concentré en la pose y la expresión de Xolo. Quise que su sorpresa se sintiera auténtica y un poco graciosa, como esas expresiones exageradas que solían tener los personajes en los dibujos animados clásicos. Sus ojos abiertos y el pelaje erizado fueron claves para transmitir el impacto de la explosión.

Then came the line art. I refined his silhouette and added more detail to his fur, giving it a spiky, uneven texture to enhance the sense of chaos. The lines also helped define his trembling stance and the still-smoking ground beneath him.

Luego pasé al delineado. Refiné su silueta y añadí más detalle a su pelaje, dándole una textura puntiaguda e irregular para reforzar la sensación de caos. Las líneas también ayudaron a definir su postura temblorosa y el suelo que aún desprende humo bajo él.

For the coloring stage, I worked with grayscale tones to keep the monochrome aesthetic. By balancing soft and dark grays, I highlighted the burnt areas, the smoky atmosphere, and the dusty look of the stone wall behind him.

En la etapa de coloreado, trabajé con tonos de gris para mantener la estética monocromática. Combinando grises suaves y oscuros, destaqué las zonas quemadas, la atmósfera con humo y el aspecto polvoriento de la pared de piedra que se ve detrás.

When adding shadows, I used them to reinforce the lighting from the blast’s aftermath. Darker tones around Xolo’s feet and the wall corners helped build depth and made the scene feel more grounded.

Al añadir las sombras, las utilicé para reforzar la iluminación posterior a la explosión. Los tonos más oscuros alrededor de los pies de Xolo y en los bordes de la pared ayudaron a construir profundidad y a que la escena se sintiera más real.

For the highlights, I focused on the reflection of light over Xolo’s fur and eyes. These small touches of brightness created a sense of heat and helped emphasize the comic tension in his expression.

Para los brillos, me enfoqué en los reflejos de luz sobre el pelaje y los ojos de Xolo. Estos pequeños toques de luminosidad aportaron una sensación de calor y ayudaron a resaltar la tensión cómica en su expresión.

Finally, I completed the background with smoky trails and blurred marks on the stone wall. This gave the impression of movement and energy still lingering in the air, tying the entire piece together into a single explosive and humorous moment.

Finalmente, completé el fondo con rastros de humo y marcas difuminadas sobre la pared de piedra. Esto dio la impresión de que el aire aún vibraba con movimiento y energía, unificando toda la pieza en un solo momento explosivo y lleno de humor.

Creating this artwork was pure fun. It allowed me to blend humor, chaos, and nostalgia into one expressive piece. I really enjoyed bringing Xolo into this cartoon-inspired world where even disasters can look adorable. It’s a reminder that art can make us smile, even in the middle of an explosion.

Crear esta obra fue realmente divertido. Me permitió combinar humor, caos y nostalgia en una sola pieza expresiva. Disfruté mucho dar vida a Xolo en este mundo inspirado en las caricaturas, donde incluso los desastres pueden verse adorables. Es un recordatorio de que el arte también puede hacernos sonreír, incluso en medio de una explosión.

The tools I used for the drawing were the following:

Android tablet.
Capacitive pen (Stylus).
Ibis Paint X program.
Brushes: Pencil, Airbrush, Fuzzy, Marker.
