Tattoo Artist: Josabeth González

All of this happened just a few weeks ago. I'm still super excited and happy, so I plan to keep talking about this tattoo experience and sharing more details.
In my first post on the subject A blackout project: The HIVE tattoo, I talked about my feelings, impressions, and expectations from a more personal point of view, along with all the excitement I felt after having gone through all that so recently. However, there are other details that are just as important that I don't want to overlook and that I want to share now, along with the video that shows the tattooing process, which I finally finished editing, haha.
In the video, besides watching the artist's creative process and execution, we can begin to learn a little bit about her, something I would like to explore further in the following sessions because I think it is very important to highlight the person behind the work.
Josabeth talks to us about her presence on social media and her former anonymity, which led some clients to believe she was a man before meeting her in person to get a tattoo, highlighting the stigma that existed around women in the tattoo world. We also talk a little about music and have a few laughs along the way.
I hope you enjoy the video and that it will be useful for anyone interested in learning more about blackouts. As far as I can tell, there are no vlogs talking about this on Hive, so I would like to provide all the relevant information through the videos I will be recording in the upcoming sessions. Pocas semanas atrás sucedió todo esto. Yo sigo súper entusiasmada y contenta, así que pienso seguir hablando y detallando todo sobre la experiencia de este tatuaje.
En mi primer post al respeto A blackout project: The HIVE tattoo hablé sobre las sensaciones, impresiones y expectativas desde un punto de vista más personal, acompañado de toda la ilusión que tenía al haber pasado por ello tan recientemente. Sin embargo, hay otros detalles igual de importantes que no me gustaría pasar por alto y que quiero compartir ahora, acompañando el vídeo que ilustra el proceso de tatuado que finalmente terminé de editar jajaja.
En el vídeo, además de observar el proceso creativo y la ejecución de la artista, podemos comenzar a conocer un poco sobre ella, algo que me gustaría profundizar en las siguientes sesiones, porque me parece muy importante poner en valor a la persona que está detrás de la obra.
Josabeth nos habla sobre su presencia en las redes sociales y su antiguo anonimato, que hizo creer a algunos clientes que ella era un hombre antes de llegar a conocerla en persona para tatuarse, resaltando el estigma que existía sobre la presencia de las mujeres en el mundo del tatuaje. También hablamos un poco sobre música y nos echamos algunas risas durante el proceso.
Espero que disfruten del vídeo y que sirva a cualquiera que esté interesado en conocer más sobre los blackouts, por lo visto, hasta ahora no hay vlogs de personas que los tengan, hablando sobre ello en Hive, así que me gustaría ir aportando toda la formación pertinente por medio de los vídeos que vaya grabando en las siguientes sesiones que me esperan. The artist: Josabeth González
Josabeth González is a Chapinian (Guatemalan) artist who specializes in blackwork tattooing, particularly blackout and blastover designs. For those who don't know exactly what each style is about, I recommend visiting her Instagram profile @bacteria.negra, where you can see designs created with lots of black ink on large areas of skin. She has also posted a photo of our work with the #HIVE logo on her profile. If you happen to stop by, let me know if you found it. 😉
Now when I think about it, I believe I got to know her almost by heavenly grace, haha, because when I started following her work on social media about two years ago while she was touring Spain, I had no intention of going to Guatemala, so I think she came into my life in the best possible way and with enough time in advance for me to familiarize myself with what she does and feel confident enough to contact her to start the blackout project I had been dreaming about for so long.

Josabeth González es una artista chapina (guatemalteca) que se especializa en tatuaje blackwort, sobre todo el diseño de blackouts y blastover. Para los que no saben concretamente de que trata cada estilo, les recomiendo visitar su perfil de Instagram @bacteria.negra en donde podrán ver que se trata de diseños elaborados con mucho negro sobre grandes superficies de piel y, además, está publicada la foto del resultado de nuestro trabajo con el logo de #HIVE en su perfeil, así que si te asomas por allí, dejame saber si lo encontraste. 😉
Ahora que lo pienso, creo que yo llegué a conocerla casi por gracia divina jajaja porque cuando comencé a seguir su trabajo por redes sociales, hace unos dos años aproximadamente mientras hacía una gira por España, no tenía la más mínima intención de ir a Guatemala, así que creo que se me presentó de la mejor forma y con suficiente tiempo de antelación, para familiarizarme con lo que ella hacía y sentirme con la suficiente confianza de contactarla, para comenzar el proyecto de blackout con el que hace tantísimo tiempo había soñado.
The studio: Paralelo Tattoo
Pararelo is located in Zone 10 of Guatemala City, conveniently close to the airport and with several hotels nearby. Both aspects were very useful to me during my visit.
At the entrance to the studio, there is a small reception area and a lounge, which separate the general public from the interior of the studio, where each tattoo artist has their own individual room. I really liked that the studio is very well cared for. Although the style is extremely alternative and each artist gives their room a unique touch, everything is generally very tidy and clean.
Each space has containers for the respective waste, and at the entrance there is a certificate confirming that they have a professional biological waste management service.
On the day of my visit, I was the only customer in the morning, so we had the studio to ourselves until the rest of the artists and customers arrived in the afternoon.
El estudio: Paralelo Tattoo
Pararelo se encuentra ubicado en la zona 10 de la Ciudad de Guatemala, convenientemente cercano al aeropuerto y con varios hoteles a sus alrededores. Ambos aspectos me fueron de gran utilidad durante mi visita.
A la entrada del estudio te consigues con una pequeña recepción y una salita de estar, que separan al público general del interior del estudio, en donde se encuentran las salas individuales de cada tatuador. Me gustó mucho que el aspecto del estudio está muy bien cuidado, a pesar de que el estilo es sumamente alternativo y que cada artista le da su toque único a su sala, todo en general es muy ordenado y limpio.
En cada espacio hay envases para los respectivos desechos y a la entrada hay un certificado en el que se puede comprobar que cuentan con un servicio profesional de manejo de desechos biológicos.
El día de mi visita era la única clienta de la mañana, por lo que teníamos el estudio solo para nosotras hasta que llegaran el resto de artistas y clientes en la tarde.

It's fun seeing the transition and the difference in decor when you move from one room to another within the studio.
Josabeth's section is decorated in a very peculiar and tasteful way, in my opinion. Beyond the work tools and medical supplies in her display case, there are several decorative pieces on her shelf, basically bones, skulls, and some small animals preserved in jars, accompanying the awards and prizes she has won for her designs.
It's a little creepy, it's true, but it's good for getting into the mood, haha. It was even funny that in the afternoon, while I was getting tattooed, she and another artist were talking about a new piece, a small skull that the other girl had bleached and perfectly restored to use as ornamentation, haha. A very common conversation. 😵
In addition, there are magnificent, inspiring designs hanging on the walls, most of which I suspect are hers, with different motifs and examples of the style she follows in her work.
Another thing that I really enjoyed was the large number of stickers that were everywhere, decorating the mirrors or the paper dispenser, as this reminds me a lot of our Hivians meetings where we exchange stickers all the time.
Es divertido ver la transición y el constataste en la decoración cuando te mueves de una sala a otra dentro del estudio.
La sección de Josabeth está decorada de una forma muy peculiar y con mucho gusto, en mi opinión. Más allá de los implementos de trabajo y material sanitario en su vitrina, hay en su repisa varias piezas decorativas, básicamente huesos, cráneos y algún animalito conservado en frasco acompañando los reconocimientos y premios obtenidos por sus diseños.
Un poco tétrico, es verdad, pero bueno para entrar en ambiente jaja. Incluso fue gracioso que por la tarde junto a otra de las artistas, mientras me tatuaba, hablaban de una pieza nueva, un pequeño cráneo que la otra chica había blanqueado y recuperado perfectamente para tenerla de adorno jajaja. Una conversación muy normal. 😵
Además en las paredes cuelgan grandiosos diseños inspiradores, intuyo que suyos en su mayoría, con distintos motivos y muestras del estilo que sigue su línea de trabajo.
Otra cosa que me divirtió mucho fue la gran cantidad de pegatinas que estaban por todos lados, decorando los espejos o el dispensador de papel, esto me recuerda mucho a nuestros encuentros de Hivians en los que intercambiamos pegatinas todo el tiempo.

My idea and her creation
So, here's a rough draft of the overall idea for my blackout project, just for the first area to be tattooed, because the plan is much bigger than just the lower leg. I'll share the rest as the whole design comes together.
We made some minor changes and agreed to mark out the entire area in the first session, to finalize the design for the first part.
It won't be a bodysuit, and I'm not sure it will even cover half my body. What I do know is that my left limbs will be a full blackout, and I'll decide on the rest as I go along. Just for that, we'll need at least six sessions, and I'm pretty sure that's an understatement.
Mi idea y su obra
Bueno, aquí muestro un burdo borrador de lo que es la idea general de mi proyecto de blackout, esto es solamente de la primera zona a tatuar, porque la idea es mucho más grande, no incluye solo la parte inferior de la pierna, pero el resto lo iré compartiendo a medida que se vaya completando el diseño global.
Hicimos algunos cambios menores y acordamos demarcar tatuando toda la zona en la primera sesión, para fijar el diseño final de esa primera parte.
En general no se trata de un bodysuit, tampoco estoy segura de que llegue a ser medio cuerpo. Lo que sí se es que las extremidades izquierdas sí serán full blackout y el resto lo iré viendo con el tiempo. Nada más con eso ya necesitaremos al menos unas 6 sesiones y estoy casi segura de que me quedo corta.

Getting back to the first session, what interested me most was starting with the part where the Hive logo would be in negative space on the blackout. I thought it was a great idea and super eye-catching, so I didn't want to wait too long to get to that part of the project. We started from the lower part of the body and not from the forearm, which is what I had considered years ago.
For me, the edge of the logo had to be somewhat irregular, so that it would stand out a little from the austerity of the rest of the blackout design.
The purpose of this was for the logo to look like a freestyle design on a much more clean-cut pattern, representing Hive's core concept. The artist totally got it, with just a couple of requests I made when we started, and I was very pleased with the result.
Inciso, en la foto de arriba pueden ver lo cool de los tatuajes del brazo de la tatuadora, me encanta que lleve en si misma el estilo que ella predica, es una muestra directa de lo cool que queda.
Volviendo, lo que más me interesaba en la primera sesión era comenzar por la parte en la que el logo de Hive quedaría en espacio negativo sobre el blackout, me parecía una idea genial y súper llamativa, por lo que no quería esperar demasiado tiempo para llegar a esa parte del proyecto, así que comenzamos desde la zona inferior del cuerpo y no desde el antebrazo, que era lo que había considerado años atrás.
Para mí el borde del logo debía ser de cierta forma irregular, para que se saliera un poco de la austeridad de lo que será el resto del diseño blackout.
La finalidad de esto era que el logo se viera en como un estilo libre sobre un patrón mucho más definido, representando el concepto base de Hive. Eso lo captó muy bien la artista, con tan solo un par de peticiones que le hice al momento de comenzar, complaciéndome totalmente.

She printed the stencil with the logo and placed it on my calf to agree on the size and location. After centering it on the first try, she began to outline the area to be filled in with black and add the outer lines I wanted.
She filled in the upper outer corner a little to show me that it would all be black, which I found super funny. If only those guide lines were the final tattoo, along with the small filling in the shape of a rising sun, it would be sooo funny. But here we are more serious than funny, so of course we were going to fill everything in with black.
I really liked that she took the time to draw freehand on my skin, measuring, marking, and checking each part. She constantly asked me to change positions to make sure everything made sense, and that made me feel very confident that the final design would look good.
Ella imprimió el stencil con el logo y lo fijó sobre mi pantorrilla para acordar el tamaño y ubicación adecuada, luego de centrarlo a la primera, comenzó a delimitar a mano alzada la zona de trabajo en donde habría que rellenar con negro y a añadir las líneas externas que yo deseaba.
Rellenó un poco el vértice externo superior, para darme a entender que eso iría todo de negro, lo que me resultó súper gracioso. Si solo esas líneas guías fuesen el tatuaje final, junto con el pequeño relleno en forma de sol naciente, sería súuuuper divertido. Pero aquí somos más serios que graciosos, así que por supuesto que íbamos a rellenar todo de negro.
Me gustó mucho que ella se tomara el tiempo suficiente para dibujar a mano alzada sobre mi piel, midiendo, demarcando y revisando cada parte. Me pedía constantemente que cambiara de posición para comprobar que todo estuviese perfecto y eso me hizo sentir muy confiada de que el diseño definitivo quedaría bien.
Getting messy
Well, throughout the video, you can see how Josabeth works and that, despite all her care and cleanliness, it's impossible not to end up making a mess with ink when working with so much black.
I won't deny it, it's a mess that I loved witnessing, ha ha ha. In a way, it's very satisfying to see how something so solid and intense becomes part of me. I just loved it.
In the video, she also comments on how easily the pigment adheres to my skin, complimenting its beauty, ha ha ha. It was a very satisfying compliment, not only because it was nice to hear, but also because I had read that many people tend to reject the ink or have allergic reactions to it, and I, until that moment, had only tried a minimal amount of ink a few days earlier.
So even though I was confident because of my history of not having allergies, I wasn't 100% sure I wouldn't have a reaction to the process.
¡A ensuciarse!
Bueno, durante el transcurso del vídeo pueden ver la forma en que Josabeth trabaja y que, a pesar de todo el cuidado y limpieza que tiene, es imposible no terminar haciendo un desastre de tinta cuando se trabaja con taranta cantidad de negro.
No voy a negarlo, es un desastre que me encantó presenciar jajajaja de alguna forma es muy satisfactorio ver como algo tan sólido e intenso comienza a formar parte de mí. Simplemente me encantó.
En el vídeo ella comenta también lo fácil que el pigmento se adhiere a mi piel, halagando la calidad de la misma jajaja un cumplido muy satisfactorio la verdad, no solo por lo grato, sino también porque había leído que muchas personas suelen rechazar la tinta o reaccionar con alergias, y yo, hasta ese momento, no había probado más que con una mínima cantidad de tinta días antes, así que aunque estaba confiada por mi historial sin alergias, no estaba segura al 100% de no tener alguna reacción al proceso.

There was a lot of ink involved, haha, so much so that before she started tattooing, she covered her forearms with black plastic wrap to protect herself while tattooing, as gloves are not enough when she has to lean on the skin for support while working.
She explained to me that it's not just about the ink; during the tattooing process, blood secretion is something important to take into account. Ultimately, what you're doing is hurting the skin by injecting ink, and our bodies react immediately to the damage they receive. It's not only important to consider hygiene for the client, but also for their own sake.
Ah! Next time I see her, I have to check the brands of the supplies Josabeth uses so I can include those details in the article. I'm sure they could be useful to someone.
And yes, OK, it was a painful experience. It would be silly to deny it, but I already talked about that at length in A blackout project: The HIVE tattoo describing how hard the 5-hour session was, but despite that, the experience is totally worth it. It even rained during the hours we were there, and I wouldn't have noticed if @stunningstephie, my companion on this adventure, hadn't shown me photos of when she went out to get some fresh air.
Hubo muchíiiiiisima tinta en juego jajaja tanto así que antes de comenzar a tatuar, ella se cubre los antebrazos con papel film negro para protegerse mientras tatúa, pues los guantes no son suficientes cuando tiene que apoyarse sobre la piel como soporte para trabajar.
Me explicó que no solo se trata de tinta, durante el proceso de tatuado la secreción de sangre es algo importante a tener en cuenta. Al final lo que se hace es lastimar la piel inyectando tinta y nuestro cuerpo reacciona inmediatamente al daño recibido. No solo es importante tener en cuenta la higiene para con el cliente, sino con ellos mismos.
¡Ah! Tengo que comprobar con ella, en la próxima oportunidad, las marcas de los insumos que Josabeth emplea para incluir esos detalles en la crónica, seguramente le pueden ser útiles a alguien.
Y sí ok, fue una experiencia dolorosa, sería una tontería negarlo, pero de eso ya hablé largo y tendido en A blackout project: The HIVE tattoo describiendo lo duro que fueron las 5 horas que duró la sesión, pero a pesar de ello la experiencia vale totalmente la pena. Durante las horas que estuvimos ahí, incluso llovió, yo ni cuenta me hubiera dado si no fuese porque @stunningstephie, mi acompañante en esta aventura, me mostró fotos cuando salía a tomar algo de aire.
The funny closing
This first session ended when filling in the entire calf area in black, including the back of the leg and the popliteal fossa, that is the back of the knee, which hurt a lot. We spent a total of five hours in the studio, three of which were spent tattooing the skin and the other two on design, tips, and breaks.
There is probably another long session left to fill in the front area, but according to Josabeth's recommendations, it will take 2 to 3 months to get there, which is very interesting to note because I was thinking of continuing after just three weeks, ha ha ha, but I can see that after three weeks, the tattooed area is just beginning to recover properly.
To end the day, after having a good laugh when she was wrapping my leg with a pad, we took some photos together. It was hard to get a good one because we kept laughing about how it looked like I was in a cast and that she had to come up and sit with me because I had trouble getting down, ha ha ha.
El gracioso final
El cierre de esta primera sesión se dio al terminar de rellenar toda la zona de la pantorrilla, la parte de atrás de la pierna, incluida la fosa poplítea, que es la parte de atrás de la rodilla, la cual dolió muchísimo. Fueron un total de 5 horas que estuvimos en el estudio, de las cuales 3 horas fueron tatuando la piel y las otras dos entre diseño, recomendaciones y descansos.
Queda otra sesión, probablemente igual de larga, para rellenar la zona delantera, pero para llegar a eso deben pasar entre 2 o 3 meses según las recomendaciones de Josabeth, algo muy interesante a tener en cuenta, pues yo pensaba continuar pasadas tres semanas apenas jajaja pero ya veo que a las tres semanas, apenas y comienza a recuperarse la zona tatuada.
Para finalizar ese día, y luego de echarnos unas buenas risas cuando me envolvía la pierna con un empapador, nos tomamos unas fotos juntas. Costó sacar una buena, porque seguíamos riéndonos de que parecía que estuviese enyesada y de que ella tuvo que subir a sentarse conmigo, porque a mí me costaba bajarme jajaja.

Advice until next appointment
She wouldn't let me leave without first sitting down to listen to all the necessary recommendations for aftercare that would ensure a successful recovery process.
Josabeth works with the Costa Rican tattoo supply brand Katau Ink and recommended Katau ointment to heal tattoos. I decided to buy the chewing gum version, as it comes in a 50 mL format that is perfect for taking on the plane without any problems. The price is 100 Guatemalan quetzals, which is approximately $13.
She also recommended other typical creams that you can find in pharmacies, but I preferred to take the one that was available right there in the studio, as I would be moving around and traveling a lot over the next month and wanted to save myself any worries.
On top of everything else, she gave me a second pad and enough tape so that I could change the bandage the next day before continuing my travels, which was a great help and I am very grateful for it, because I doubt I would have been able to buy one without having to invest in a whole pack.
She made me a little package with the balm I bought and some of her stickers, wishing me a happy trip, it was a really nice gesture that made me super happy. Often, small actions like this can lift the spirits of those who least expect it.
I won't go into detail here about the aftercare process, because it would be an unnecessary digression, so I'll share it in a detailed way on a later post.
Consejos hasta la siguiente sesión
No me dejó irme sin sentarme a escuchar antes todas las recomendaciones necesarias para los cuidados posteriores que debía darle al tatuaje y que garantizarían un exitoso proceso de recuperación.
Josabeth trabaja con la marca costarricense de insumos para tatuajes Katau Ink y me recomendó el bálsamo para curar tatuajes Katau ointment. Decidí comprarla en su presentación de chicle, pues está disponible en formato de 50 mL que es perfecta para llevarla en el avión sin problemas. El precio es de 100 quetzales guatemaltecos, que son aproximadamente 13$.
Ella también me recomendó las otras cremas típicas que consigues en las farmacias, pero preferí llevarme esa que estaba disponible ahí mismo en el estudio, pues estaría moviéndome y viajando mucho durante el proximo mes y prefería ir ahorrándome preocupaciones.
Además de todo, me obsequió un segundo empapador y cinta suficiente, para que pudiera cambiarme el vendaje al día siguiente, antes de continuar mis viajes, algo que fue de gran ayuda y que le agradezco mucho, porque dudo que hubiese podido comprar una unidad de eso, sin tener que invertir en un paquete completo.
Me hizo un sobrecito, junto al bálsamo que compré y algunos stickers suyos, deseándome feliz viaje, un detalle muy bonito que me puso súper contenta. Muchas veces, pequeñas acciones así, le cambian el ánimo a quien menos lo espera.
No me voy a detener aquí a detallar el proceso del cuidado posterior, porque sería extenderme innecesariamente, así que lo compartiré en un siguiente post de forma más precisa.

So, let's talk about the price. 🤑
When I got back to the reception, I paid in cash the difference between what we had agreed when I booked the appointment and the final price, because to secure the booking I had to make a deposit or transfer of 300 Quetzales ($40) to the artist, which would be deducted from the final price of the tattoo. We initially agreed on 4,000 Quetzales (approximately $520), which could vary if something in the design changed during the session, but in our case, the price remained the same.
Before leaving, I jumped at the chance to swap stickers with Josabeth. I only had a mini version of the @worldmappin pins with me, which I printed at Lake Atitlán to share with the new members of Hive Hub Guate, so I left her a couple.
I'm glad she liked them and told me she was a fan of stickers, as we could clearly see in her workroom, haha. So now this tattoo studio is located on the #worldmappin map, and there will surely be more posts attached to that location.
My first experience with Josabeth was super cool, and I'm really happy that she turned out to be such a nice, respectful, and talented person who's in charge of doing this blackout project for me. I can't wait to continue with the sessions, despite the pain, hahaha.

El momento de la verdad, hablemos del precio 🤑
Al volver a la recepción, pagué en efectivo la diferencia restante de lo que habíamos acordado cuando reservé la cita, pues para asegurar la reserva había que hacer un depósito o transferencia de 300 Quetzales (40$) a la artista, que se descontarian del precio final del tatuje. En un principio acordamos el precio de 4.000 Quetzales (aproximadamente 520$) para esta sesión, que podía variar si algo en el diseño cambiaba durante la misma, pero en nuestro caso el precio se mantuvo.
Antes de irme, aproveché la ocasión de intercambiar pegatinas con Josabeth, solamente llevaba conmigo una mini versión de los pines de @worldmappin, que imprimí en el Lago de Atitlán para compartir con los nuevos miembros de Hive Hub Guate, y le dejé un par.
Me alegró que los recibiera con tanto gusto y luego me dijo que era fan de los stickers, como bien podíamos ver en su sala de trabajo jajaja. Así que ahora, este estudio de tatuaje está ubicado en el Mapa de #worldmappin y, seguramente, habrá más publicaciones anexadas a esa ubicación.
Mi primera experiencia junto a Josabeth fue genial, estoy muy contenta de que haya resultado una persona tan agradable, respetuosa y talentosa quien esté a cargo de elaborar este proyecto de blackout para mí. No puedo esperar a continuar con las demás sesiones, a pesar del dolor jajajaja.

Por lo vistó piensas cambiar de color de piel 😁, ser moreno tiene sus ventajas, lo descubrí cuando a los 10 años se discimulaban bien los correazos de mi mamá.
