The Spartans didn't die at Thermopylae because of a reward contract; they died because their honor was stronger than their fear. Tacitus didn't write for the emperor's glory, but so that the truth wouldn't be lost to oblivion. That's what it means to be loyal: to not give up even if the world ignores you, even if the token falls, and even if no one votes for you.
