As a guitar teacher, I've had the opportunity to experience countless things, mostly positive. But I've noticed some recurring themes throughout my entire teaching career, and even during my time as a student.
Today I'll talk about one that I'm sure you're familiar with, as it's not unique to teaching concert guitar: formal schooling alone isn't enough to be successful in your career.
You have to study a lot, and even more so, self-taught. Formal schooling, in any discipline, isn't sufficient without individual practice.
The first thing we need to make clear is this: formal schooling is just a starting point. A good point, a necessary one, but not the goal.
At school, whether a conservatory or a university, they teach you the established content, the accepted theory, the basic technique.
They give you a map.
But the truth of the profession, the real territory with its broken paths and unexpected shortcuts, is learned outside.
The true craft is learned by practicing for hours alone in your room, playing in small venues, listening to recordings no teacher assigned you, solving a technical problem at two in the morning because you can't sleep until you solve it.
But also by watching films, reading, learning foreign languages, participating in artistic events, and much more. Even in things that have nothing to do with your profession.
The content of school isn't the limit of what you need to improve yourself. It's the basics, the minimum.
To truly excel, you must keep reading, exploring, questioning. You have to learn new and different things every day.
In my case, it wasn't enough to know about trends and techniques. I had to learn about art history, anatomy to understand posture, basic acoustics, even psychology to manage stage fright and to understand how to teach better.
One profession isn't enough. You must know about other trades and practices to become increasingly well-rounded. A musician who only knows about music is incomplete. They need to understand the world that music speaks of and in which it exists.
I've noticed that truly intelligent people don't need to be told what to study, when, or how much. Much less how to think.
These people use school as a solid foundation and, from there, refine their own judgment independently. They research, compare sources, and experiment. They don't wait to be given a syllabus; they construct their own based on their questions and ambitions.
Every new thing we learn and refine is a new tool we can use to complement and professionalize everything we've learned so far.
Computer skills help you record your demos. Writing skills help you write your own projects. Knowledge of another language opens doors to foreign study methods.
The more complete our toolkit, the less work we'll do in the dark. We'll be able to solve problems more creatively and efficiently.
There's a saying that sums it up: "He who only knows medicine, doesn't even know medicine." If you only know your field from within your field, your vision is limited. Great advances usually come from connections with other disciplines.
Being self-taught doesn't mean isolating yourself from others. Nor does it mean stopping school. It's not wrong to listen to other people.
Quite the opposite.
Being self-taught means knowing that knowledge isn't acquired passively, waiting for someone to serve it to you. It means knowing that you have to seek it out, work for it, and conquer it.
School, the teacher, show you the initial path, point you in the right direction, and warn you of the first bumps in the road.
But it's your job, and yours alone, to travel it. It's your responsibility to put in the miles, sweat on the climbs, and enjoy the scenery that only those who venture out on their own get to see.
Success isn't a diploma on the wall. It's what you can do when no one is watching or evaluating you. It's the sum of everything you learned of your own volition, long after the starting bell rang.

Como Maestra de guitarra he tenido la oportunidad de vivir muchísimas experiencias de todo tipo, sobre todo de las buenas. Pero he podido notar cómo hay algunas que se repiten año tras año, a lo largo de toda mi carrera como Maestra, e incluso siendo yo alumna.
Hoy les hablaré de una que de seguro la conocen, ya que no es algo único en la enseñanza de la guitarra de concierto: la escuela no es basta para ser exitoso en tu carrera. Tienes que estudiar mucho, y más de forma autodidacta.
La escuela, en cualquier disciplina, no es suficiente sin el estudio individual.
Lo primero que tenemos que dejar claro es esto: la escuela es solo un punto de partida. Un buen punto, necesario, pero no es la meta.
En la escuela, ya sea un conservatorio o una universidad, te enseñan los contenidos establecidos, la teoría aceptada, la técnica base.
Te dan un mapa.
Pero la verdad de la profesión, el territorio real con sus caminos rotos y sus atajos inesperados, se aprende fuera.
El verdadero oficio se aprende practicando horas solo en tu habitación, tocando en lugares pequeños, escuchando grabaciones que ningún profesor te asignó, resolviendo un problema técnico a las dos de la mañana porque no puedes dormir hasta solucionarlo.
Pero también viendo cine, leyendo, aprendiendo idiomas extranjeros, participando en eventos artísticos, y mucho más. Incluso en aquello que no tenga nada que ver con tu profesión.
El contenido de la escuela no es el límite de lo que necesitas para superarte. Es lo básico, el piso mínimo.
Para realmente destacar, debes seguir leyendo, explorando, cuestionando. Tienes que aprender cosas nuevas y diferentes cada día.
En mi caso, no bastaba con saber de tendencias y técnicas. Tuve que aprender sobre historia del arte, sobre anatomía para entender la postura, sobre acústica básica, incluso sobre psicología para manejar los nervios en el escenario y para entender cómo enseñar mejor.
No basta con una profesión. Debes conocer de otros oficios y prácticas para ser cada vez más integral. Un músico que solo sabe de música está mutilado. Necesita entender el mundo del que esa música habla y en el que se mueve.
Observo que a la persona realmente inteligente no hay que decirle qué estudiar, ni cuándo, ni cuánto. Mucho menos, cómo pensar.
Esas personas utilizan la escuela como una base sólida y, a partir de ahí, afinan su propio criterio por cuenta propia. Investigan, comparan fuentes, experimentan. No esperan a que les den un temario; construyen el suyo propio en función de sus dudas y sus ambiciones.
Cada cosa nueva que aprendemos y perfeccionamos, es una herramienta nueva que podemos utilizar para complementar y profesionalizar todo lo aprendido hasta el momento.
Un conocimiento de informática te ayuda a grabar tus demos. Un conocimiento de redacción te ayuda a escribir tus propios proyectos. Un conocimiento de otro idioma te abre puertas a métodos de estudio extranjeros.
Mientras más completo sea nuestro set de herramientas, menos trabajo ciego pasaremos en la vida. Podremos resolver problemas de forma más creativa y eficiente.
Hay un dicho que lo resume: "El que solo de medicina sabe, ni de medicina sabe". Si solo conoces tu campo desde dentro de tu campo, tu visión es limitada. Los grandes avances suelen venir de conexiones con otras disciplinas.
Ser autodidacta no es aislarse de los demás. Tampoco es dejar de ir a la escuela. No es ilegal escuchar a otras personas.
Todo lo contrario.
Ser autodidacta significa saber que el conocimiento no se adquiere de forma pasiva, esperando a que alguien te lo sirva. Significa saber que hay que buscarlo, trabajarlo y conquistarlo.
La escuela, el maestro, te enseñan el camino inicial, te señalan la dirección y te advierten de los primeros baches.
Pero es tu trabajo, y solo tuyo, recorrerlo. Es tu responsabilidad poner el kilometraje, sudar en las subidas y disfrutar de los paisajes que solo quien se aventura por su cuenta llega a ver.
El éxito no es un diploma en la pared. Es lo que puedes hacer cuando nadie te está viendo, ni evaluando. Es la suma de todo lo que aprendiste por tu propia voluntad, mucho después de que sonó la campana de salida.
Cuando alguien como tú, con tu experiencia, magisterio y sencillez ante la vida, dice algo así, debemos simplemente tener en cuenta cada palabra. ¡Gracias por esa luz que ofreces a todos!
Ser humilde ante el conocimiento; sí.
La idea es que la escuela o lo académico nos enseñe a buscar.
En un mundo globalizado y tecnificado, es mucho lo que aprendemos a diario, además de lo que profesionalmente somos.
