Yard Sunflowers

May have gotten carried away with the sunflowers this year. When I was little, I spent a good deal of time with my granny and she always tried to pass on what she knew of making things grow. Don't know that I'll ever be as good at it as she was but I've definitely got her fondness for it.

My partner and I have been working towards a 'no mow' yard, which means growing things to keep the city code enforcement away. By things, I mean food and flowers, mostly perennials with some annuals for variety.

We try to always have some sunflowers, but this year I kind of went a little beyond 'some'. Tried to make a sunflower 'fence' along one side of the yard, and then planted a few more here, another one there, couple more hither, tither, and yon and the next thing you know there's a bit of an abundance of sunflowers. And that was before the transplantation experiment.

You'll get no complaints from me about that, but it has led to a rather curious phenomenon. Last week I happened to look out the window in time to see a lady come into the yard and cut herself a few sunflowers. Later that day another woman rang our doorbell and used Google translate on her phone to ask if she could have five sunflowers. Why five? Seemed odd and curiously specific.

Seems everybody loves sunflowers. Since then there's been a few more to stop and ask for flowers or just to come in the yard to take photos. I don't mind, it's nice to share the enjoyment of them with others, but it has been a bit curious and perplexing. In years past there's been an abundance of other flowers but never folks stopping by to ask for some. The other thing is that all the ones who've stopped have been Spanish speakers, only one interaction was in English. My Spanish is terrible and rusty, much too much to ask questions, but it got me to wondering if there's some sort of cultural connection or association with sunflowers that I'm not aware of. Any of y'all know?

Just gave everything a drink this evening, so if the weather forecast holds up there should still be plenty of sunflowers for the next little bit. Should be interesting to see if they keep bringing me visitors.

What an awesome pictures! I used to grow a sunflower but when it gets around this time of they year, it wilt and I wasn't able to revive it. Will probably try again since they do make a great object for a photo.

Thank you! I'm afraid mine are about to reach that stage as well, my early sunflower is already dead. I've got three different kinds growing in these photos, sometimes the giants will flower with one big head and after it gets full and droops it will start shooting off lots of smaller flowers, right after it convinces me it is dying.

Fantastic sunflowers shots @coloneljethro friend!!!... Thanks for sharing!
