La palabra español viene del latín hispaniolus, que significa de hispania, o sea, la actual España. Castellano viene del latín castellanus que significa de Castilla, la cual es una región de España. Etimológicamente, castellano es la lengua que se habla en Castilla y español significa la lengua que se habla en España. ¿Pero, acaso la lengua que se habla en Castilla y en toda España en general no es la misma? Pues sí. Es correcto decir tanto español como castellano. ¿Pero por qué a veces las personas dicen que usar alguno de estos dos términos es incorrecto? Pues cuando los estados de la mayoría de los países americanos se independizaron se prefería usar el término castellano ya que español recordaba a la época colonial. La RAE (Real Academia de la Lengua Española) dice que ambas palabras son sinónimos (español=castellano). Sin embargo, recomienda usar español para referirse a la lengua que se habla en España, la mayor parte de América, Filipinas, Guinea Ecuatorial y otros, ya que es una palabra más internacional. La palabra castellano especifica el dialecto romance que se originó en Castilla y del cual se derivó el español. Entonces, se sugiere usar el término castellano para diferenciar este idioma de otros que también se hablan en España, como por ejemplo: el gallego, el catalán o el euskera. Conclusión: podemos usar la palabra que deseemos.
