School Network

The girl looks at the untidy shoes in the corner of the room, so absorbed that she gives the impression that, at any moment, one of them will move its tongue and tell her: "Don't go to school today, or tomorrow, or the following days... ever again".

Instead, they are unperturbed by her blank, broken stare, but maintain their impassive stillness, like the rest of the room. Not so for Marina. In the midst of her trance she feels the walls writhe, the ceiling come crashing down, the messy bed shake throwing her outward, toward the collision of her little world above her. The inhalations become heavier and heavier and the knot in her chest expands, hogging the space of her lungs, preventing them from working properly. Oxygen is running out...

-Marina, it's time to go," her father says abruptly, as he waits impatiently under the door frame. He pulls the girl out of her crisis with his interruption and the air takes its natural course in the young woman's body.

For her his attitude is nothing new. She couldn't call him a strict father, because between her carefree and unstable mother and him, who at least does take care of his daughter as every father should, it was obvious who would get full custody after the divorce. Only under situations where stress rules, her father becomes a ball of snappiness and tension.

Just as he is now because of what happened in the previous days.

Marina stands up and gives him a weak nod by way of response. She takes one last look at herself in front of the mirror before leaving and pulls her short hair into a loose ponytail, with strands sticking out to the sides and falling straight down her rosy cheeks from crying.

-We didn't talk last night," her father begins as he drives straight ahead. I think you should at least fill me in on what happened, I say, so I don't make a fool of myself at the meeting with the principal.

Marina moves her forehead away from the car window and leans back in the seat before speaking:

-What I told you the day it happened, that's all... at least what I know.

-Yes, but that's not enough, I need you to tell me what happened to get to the disaster! -ends shouting the man behind the wheel.

The girl tries to stop the tears in her eyes and swallows the thick lump in her throat to stop crying.

-All right, but don't scream anymore! -She pauses and continues as the car pulls up after the red light. I've been chatting with Franco, a boy from my class, for several weeks. He's new and he's a sensation at school. Everyone talks about him, either because of his incredible intelligence or his talent in karate. At first I didn't have high expectations, I wasn't interested at all; but one day, in the middle of Spanish class, he sent me a note that said: ¿Me envías un mensaje de texto? Quiero conocerte, cariño. Underneath it was her phone number. -The girl smiles wistfully, remembering the chills and butterflies in her stomach when she found out with that torn paper note that a boy was noticing her for the first time. It felt so cute, but I didn't talk to him all at once, but we started a secret, tentative game in which we flirted with each other through those little desk notes.

"A few weeks later, we were chatting. A few weeks sooner, he asked me for intimate pictures... And yes, before you say it, I know we got to that situation really fast too, but I really liked him; he made me feel safe and gave me no reason to be wary, plus, he was the first one to send his pack. I trusted and sent mine... after all, packs are like flowers and boxes of chocolates in this generation, aren't they? -Marina laughs wryly. Her father is not amused.

The car stops and her father gives her a stern expression.

-What the hell are the packs, Marina?

-A set of intimate photos and videos that people share with each other over the Internet. Just like mine, only the photos don't always end up being spread to every corner of the school network," she says in a half-voice.

The man sighs and lowers his head, looking tired and annoyed.

-And you think it's logical that a girl from home, fifteen years old, sends those packs to a hormonal boy as if nothing? Haven't I taught you to respect yourself?! -shouts her father, totally enraged by the situation.

Marina tries to remove herself from her reality and looks over everything as if she were just a third-person spectator. Her father's thinking is too ambiguous to respond to her scolding, and she is depressed enough to do so. The Marina from earlier would, "is it the fault of the girls who send their intimate content or the pigs who spread it to boost their bruised ego?". Sure, that's the rational argument with which she views that situation when it happens to another girl, but this time it's her who it happens to. Her mind wanders too much in a spiral of thoughts and arguments that never quite settle and form an idea, while sadness settles in and engulfs everything with its dull blue hue.

They both get out of the car. The street is deserted.

As they approach the building, the shrill murmur coming from the classrooms embraces Marina and as soon as they pass through the tall iron doors, she feels as if she has passed through a portal, which transports her to her worst nightmare. One where all eyes are directed at her in a contemptuous and mocking way, where whispers rush forward in waves that reach her ears like screams. It's a nightmare where those who judge her seem never to have made a mistake and where none of them raise the white flag and ask her, "How much has this affected you, Marina?"

The director waits for them in his office. They are the last to arrive, Franco and his mother are already there.

-Good morning, Mr. Hernandez," greets Director Gregorio to Marina's father. With his hand in a quick gesture he indicates where to take a seat. Okay, I don't have much time this morning, so let's finish with this problem as soon as possible -he says anxiously, while adjusting his tie-. It is clear that young Franco owes us all an explanation on this matter and, above all, a sincere apology for his morbid actions.

Franco shifts in annoyance in his seat, his foot drumming on the floor; he seems about to explode.

-I've said it so many times in the last few days and I'm not going to stop saying it: I didn't share the pack on the damn school network," he emphasizes each word, surprisingly, in a calm tone, although his foot carries the same unbridled rhythm.

-And I believe my son," Franco's mother says.
Marina's father lets out a snort and rolls his eyes in exasperation.

-Of course he believes him, if there is no abuser without someone to help him! -he shouts, surprising everyone.

From that comment on, the office turns into a shouting match that soon silences Marina's passive voice:

-I believe Franco, Dad. Now can they stop the scandal? -Her father looks at her in astonishment. Not one hundred percent. There is still a part of me that doubts his sincerity, but, if we look at the situation rationally, why would Franco spread my pack precisely through the school network if he is a student with a neat academic level? Why would he do something that would indisputably have an impact on his academic record?

Franco agrees with Marina. That argument was the first one that crossed his mind as soon as they started pointing the finger at him.

Deep down, everyone in the room knows that Franco could not have been the one who disseminated the photos; each one for different reasons, but they all keep quiet about it.

-You say it out of youthful infatuation, but I know it was him.

-Oh, yes, and what proof do you have, director Gregorio? -Franco is getting more and more tense.

-One of his friends from the karate team came to me and confessed that you told him about the photos and, besides, he sent them to you.

Franco falls silent and silence settles in the office. Yes, he sent those photos to his partner, but they were not Marina's. How does he deny the director if he really did that? Does the fact that those photos he shared were not spread on the Internet take away his guilt for having committed a horrendous act such as betraying that girl's trust by sharing her photos with his friend? If he clears up the matter he will look like a lousy person, but if he doesn't he will look guilty of something he didn't really commit. But in a matter of seconds another thought enters his mind: the principal completely controls the clubs and sports teams at school, everyone is afraid of him. His partner knew that those pictures he sent him were not Marina's, but he still decided to lie to avoid repercussions from the corrupt principal.

-Go to the trunks, you old baldy! -He stands up abruptly and knocks over the chair. What started as tension is now released as Franco's volatile temperament.

Everyone looks at the stage in surprise, but director Gregorio closes the subject sooner than expected.

-I will not allow any more insults and disrespect! -He adjusts his tie and proceeds to communicate the decision he made, without consulting the school board, prior to the meeting. Franco is permanently expelled from this academic institution. As for you, Marina, your expulsion will only be for three weeks and when you return you will have to complete one hundred hours of community service," he finishes.

Franco picks up his bag from the floor and shouts for his mother to follow him, but first he gives Marina a kind and sincere look.

-I didn't do it, Marina. I love you too much to do something like that," he says and leaves.
Marina just watches him walk away.

She and her father leave the premises after saying goodbye to the director. There was no need for any of them to object, it was clear that Director Gregorio would make the ambiguous and unfair law that the victim is also guilty... if not the most or only one guilty of everything.

Marina did not expect to find the culprit of her public humiliation in that meeting. After all, an apology would not turn back the clock.

Meanwhile, in his pleasant office, Director Gregorio gloats about having played God: he knows the whole truth and handles it as he pleases.

As an omniscient narrator, I think it is only fair that I tell you the truth that everyone ignores: the truth is that it was Gregorio who spread the pack.

In recent years, with the growth of social networks, the principal has found a disturbing pleasure in prying into the lives of his students, including their lives on the internet; as long as they are connected to the school's internet network, he can pry into their secrets. Marina's pack all over the school network was a fortuitous mistake on Gregorio's part; instead of spreading it on the internet, he spread it on the school network, the cloud where students upload and view their school work.

The harsh truth is that a possible adolescent romance was destroyed by the perversion and ravings of a man in his fifties who enjoys chaos.

The end.

Red Escolar

I want to meet you, honey.
