"Notes on discipline"

in Writing Club2 years ago (edited)

Hello writing community;
Do you know that many of us see discipline as punishment?
Identifying what you know and what you do not know is very important in habit formation, being disciplined and becoming the person you have always wanted to be. The person you want to be is in you, it doesn't have to be anyone else, it is the better version of your current self, it is you at your best form. This realisation will save us from working ourselves out and punishing ourselves.

We all have dreams, desires and aspirations,but most times deseires are not enough, it is not enough to just dream or have aspirations. This dreams need to become reality and this is where discipline comes into play. Most people throw their dreams out of the window because they are too lazy to practice self discipline and this should not be so.
We should always realize that it is nice to dream, but reality sets in when we realise that the discipline that comes before these dreams can be achieved can be intense and if at any point we fail to exercise this discipline, we should be ready to kiss the thought of our dreams becoming a reality goodbye.

It is ok to be tired at some point, this will help one's mental health and that is fine. But, what is not fine is being down and refusing to get up. I am saying, learn how to care for your body in a way that still allows you to take care of your goals and dreams. Let go of excuses, push yourslef, acquire new knowledge and skills. Make constant effort to achieve your dreams while finding time to rest and re-energise.
Setting priorities, putting a time frame on our goals and vision and actually working towards achieving these goals are all part of being disciplined. A lot of times we procastinate, forgetting that time waits for no man. "If you do not take care of a day, you are going to loose a week, if you do not take care of a week, you will most likely loose a month". Every single moment should be cherished and utilised. So do not feel like you have got time because that way life will pass you by unnoticed.

I will share a short story of how in high school i wanted to join the debating society but never did because i kept procastinating and wasnt disciplined. I knew i had skills, i knew my oratory prowess were amazing and i knew i would do well in the debating and literary society, but what i needed most to excel i did not have and that is DISCIPLINE. I remember every term i would say to myself "i will join the debating society" befor i knew what was happening the term was over. I will then say to myself, "dont worry, i will join in tje coming year". I kept doing this for 6 years and reality dawned on me when i found myself in SS3 about to graduate high school.. i had wasted 6 years of my life because i lacked discipline.

You can only grow once you start seeing discipline as a training rather than a punishment. This is why visions and disciplines work hand in hand. You can't have a vision and not be disciplined and vice versa. Vision informs discipline and so does discipline inform vision.

At the end of the day, do not forget that your dreams are valid and that it is ok to dream but those dreams will remain dreams without discipline.
