Greetings to all. Music is truly magical, it not only helps us to improve our moods but also to understand ourselves and at other times, it gives us wonderful inspiration. Last night I was listening to some of my playlist and out came the song "Secret Project", by the wonderful Japanese composer Yuki Kajiura for the soundtrack ".hack//SIGN Original Soundtrack 2", which I have known for more than 15 years and a story started to narrate in my head, I immediately jotted down some points and decided to turn it into a short story inspired by it. I hope you enjoy both the song and the story.
Un saludo a todos. La música es verdaderamente mágica, no solo nos ayuda a mejorar nuestros estados de ánimo sino también a entendernos y en otras ocasiones, nos da una inspiración maravillosa. Anoche estaba escuchando algunos de mis playlist y salió la canción “Secret Project”, de la maravillosa compositora japonesa Yuki Kajiura para el soundtrack “.hack//SIGN Original Soundtrack 2”, el cual conozco desde hace más de 15 años y se empezó a narrar una historia en mi cabeza, enseguida anoté algunos puntos y decidí convertirlo en un relato corto inspirado en ello. Espero disfruten tanto la canción como el relato.

–"I can't allow it. How are you guys okay with this? We are a team, we can't just leave him to his fate!"– Lucia's face was flushed, usually she didn't lose her composure but this time she couldn't help but feel she had to raise her voice. Her fists were clenched without threatening anyone, they contained all possible emotions.
–"Lower your voice, Lucia. You criticize us for our actions but you come to raise your voice for anyone to hear and expose us even more"– In front of her was Fred, a taller, thinner guy with glasses and a somewhat unkempt beard. His voice was soft but firm. He did not look her in the eyes.
–"Lucia, understand, it's not that we wanted this to be the way. We are aware that it is dangerous, but tell me something, what other option is there?"– Tony approached her as he asked his question, he was generally more animated and carefree but this time there was no smile on his face, he was sincere in his words and although there was reason in that they did not have many options, or rather, no options, Lucia did not agree with the decision Raul made.
– “No puedo permitirlo ¿Cómo están ustedes de acuerdo con esto? Somos un equipo, ¡no podemos simplemente dejarlo a su suerte!”– Lucía tenía el rostro colorado, usualmente no perdía la compostura pero esta vez no pudo evitar el sentir que debía alzar la voz. Sus puños estaban apretados sin amenazar a nadie, contenían todas las emociones posibles.
–“Baja la voz, Lucía. Nos criticas por nuestras acciones pero vienes tu a alzarnos la voz para que cualquiera escuche y nos exponga aún más” – Frente a ella estaba Fred, un sujeto más alto, delgado con lentes y una barba algo descuidada. Su voz era suave pero firme. No la veía a los ojos.
–“Lucía, entiende, no se trata de que hayamos querido que esta fuera la manera. Estamos conscientes que es peligroso, pero dime algo ¿qué otra opción hay?”– Tony se acercó a ella al formular su pregunta, él era por general más animado y despreocupado pero esta vez no había una sonrisa en su rostro, era sincero en sus palabras y aunque había razón en que no tenían muchas opciones, o más bien, ninguna opción, Lucía no estaba de acuerdo con la decisión que tomó Raúl.
Lucia, Fred, Tony and Raul have been friends since college. The three of them graduated together in administration and economy, and with a lot of effort they opened businesses and a couple of companies. They decided to form a partnership to manage everything between the four of them. A few months earlier, Fred noticed that the income in the two smaller companies they owned had decreased, but he didn't think anything of it because it didn't affect them from a macro point of view, and since they were dealing with merchandise and groceries, he assumed that it could have been influenced by the onset of winter. Until a month ago, when the two companies had an abnormal economic downturn, this not only alerted him, but also Lucia and Tony. They decided to have a meeting but Raul did not arrive at the agreed time. They started without him, discussing the ideas of what could have happened taking into consideration the season, employees, sales, purchases from suppliers, external relations and advertising and they noticed a "gap" that was getting bigger and bigger as the months went by. The money coming in was going out more and more each month.
They thought it was theft by the supervisors and coordinators, Lucia in her anger came close to calling them out until Tony stopped her and tried to calm her down. Fred stood up –"It was Raul."
Lucía, Fred, Tony y Raúl son amigos desde la universidad. Los tres se graduaron juntos en administración y contaduría, con mucho esfuerzo abrieron negocios y un par de empresas. Decidieron formar una sociedad y así dirigirlo todo entre los cuatro. Unos meses antes, Fred notó que los ingresos en las dos empresas más pequeñas que poseían habían disminuido, no le dio importancia porque no les afectaba desde el punto de vista macro, además que como se trataba de mercancías y comestibles, asumió que pudo ser influencia de la entrada del invierno. Hasta que un mes atrás las dos empresas cayeron económicamente de una manera anormal, esto no solo lo alertó a él sino también a Lucía y a Tony. Decidieron hacer una reunión pero Raúl no llegó a la hora acordada. Comenzaron sin él, comentando las ideas de lo que pudo haber ocurrido tomando en consideración la temporada, los empleados, las ventas, las compras a proveedores, las relaciones externas y publicidad y notaron un “hueco” que se hacía más y más grande conforme pasaban los meses. El dinero que entraba estaba saliendo más y más cada mes.
Pensaron que se trataba de un robo por parte de los supervisores y coordinadores, Lucía en su enfado estuvo cerca de llamarlos hasta que Tony la detuvo y la intentó calmar. Fred se puso de pie –“Fue Raúl”.
Hearing that made both Lucia and Tony's eyes widen in puzzlement. –"Wait, Fred, how come it was Raul? Raul what? Did he send you an SMS?"– Tony stammered a little despite his attempts to pretend he didn't think what Fred meant, even so, he didn't hesitate to clarify his statement.
–"It was Raul. I remembered that 6 months ago he asked me details about the companies that gave us the least income, of course, I gave him all the information and since he was telling me about his own analysis I thought it was just one of the usual conversations to improve and move forward."
–"And for sure that's what happened"– Lucia interrupted Fred raising her voice –"You know how Raul is, he worries too much and he's annoying about those things, so..."
–"No. That wasn't his intention"– This time Fred interrupted Lucia. –"The outflow of money started a month after that and although it wasn't considerable and even went unnoticed, the increase continued every month until it was unrecoverable unless we put in a high investment. The outflow of money was increasing on a weekly percentage basis and when we checked here..."– Fred looked through the various papers that the three of them were reviewing –"Aha, here. See that there are bank transfers to four unknown accounts".
–"But wouldn't they be from new suppliers?"– asked Tony, still not convinced of what Fred was saying.
–"No. It can't be that, remember I just checked and I'm sure we haven't had any different goods from new suppliers for a long time, the only different is from one that also supplies the other companies and we already have that one registered in the system. This is new"– Lucia no longer had the same strength she had a couple of minutes ago.
–"Exactly. The money is not falling in his account but in others', besides, he has not arrived and that is strange coming from him. He's very punctual and if he's going to be late..."
–"... He always warns..."– Tony finished saying with his hand on his head –"That means he is aware of what we are doing and what we are talking about. He's not stupid...".
–"Calm down, so far we only have an idea of what happened with the companies but we don't know the reason. I don't think he wants to steal the money, it had to be for something important"– Fred said while cleaning his glasses, he wanted to keep his composure but his arched eyebrows were always a sign of concern.
Escuchar eso hizo que tanto Lucía y Tony abrieran los ojos perplejos. –“Espera, Fred ¿Cómo es eso de que fue Raúl? ¿Raúl qué? ¿Te mandó un SMS acaso?”– Tony tartamudeaba un poco a pesar de sus intentos de simular que no pensó lo que Fred quiso decir, aun así, este no dudó en aclarar su afirmación.
–“Fue Raúl. Recordé que hace 6 meses me preguntó detalles sobre las empresas que menos ingresos nos otorgaban, por supuesto, le di toda la información y como él me hablaba de sus propios análisis pensé que se trataba solo de una de las usuales conversaciones para mejorar y avanzar”.
–“Y de seguro eso eso es lo que pasó”– Lucía interrumpió a Fred alzando la voz –“Ustedes saben cómo es Raúl, se preocupa en exceso y es fastidioso con esas cosas, así que…”
–“No. No era esa su intención”– Esta vez Fred interrumpió a Lucía. –“La salida de dinero empezó un mes después de eso y aunque no fue algo considerable y hasta pasaba desapercibido, el aumento siguió cada mes hasta ser irrecuperable a menos que pongamos una alta inversión. La salida de dinero se estaba haciendo porcentualmente cada semana y al revisar acá…”– Fred buscaba entre los varios papeles que estaban revisando entre los tres –“Ajá, acá. Vean que hay unas transferencias bancarias a cuatro cuentas desconocidas”.
–“¿Pero no serían de proveedores nuevos?”– Preguntó Tony aún sin querer estar convencido de lo que Fred decía.
–“No. No puede ser eso, recuerda que acabo de revisar y estoy segura de que no hemos tenido mercancías diferentes a lo usual por parte de nuevos proveedores desde hace tiempo, lo único diferente es de uno que también provee a las otras empresas y ya ese lo tenemos registrado en el sistema. Esto es nuevo”– Lucía ya no tenía la misma fuerza de hace un par de minutos.
–“Exactamente. El dinero no está cayendo en la cuenta de él pero si en la de otros, además, él no ha llegado y eso es raro viniendo de él. Es muy puntual y si va a tardar…”
–“… Él siempre avisa…”– Terminó diciendo Tony con su mano en la cabeza –“Eso significa que él está consciente de lo que estamos haciendo y de lo que hablamos. Él no es estúpido ¡Demonios!”.
–“Cálmate, hasta ahora solo tenemos una idea de lo que pasó con las empresas pero no sabemos la razón. No creo que quiera robarse el dinero, tuvo que ser por algo en especial”– Dijo Fred mientras limpiaba sus lentes, quería mantener la compostura pero sus cejas arqueadas siempre eran señal de preocupación.
They knew he had not left the country but he did not answer, until the fifth day, at 8 AM, the three of them received a message from him "Guys. I don't ask you to forgive me for disappearing, I know you well and I know that you must already know why those companies went down and yes, I was responsible. I am not going to deny it or make excuses, I will only explain the reasons for that". They met immediately, cancelled all pending commitments just to wait for Raul's call or message to explain what had happened. The night arrived and they were already tired of waiting, they were very anxious and sensed the worst until suddenly several messages arrived on their phones.
Good evening, my friends. I didn't want to take so long to write to you, I'm sure you were waiting for me. I will explain while I can: 6 months ago I received an interesting proposal from a client in Europe, I can't tell you from where or who it is for security reasons. At first it seemed well supported and reliable like all the ones we have dealt with and negotiated. But then I was asked not to discuss this with you to respect the integrity of the business, this was obviously suspicious but I ignored it out of curiosity. Anyway, I needed to invest money if I wanted to proceed, that was not complicated for me but I got into a very serious and above all very dangerous problem. I got involved in illicit merchandise business and I can't get out of it so easily. They started to swindle me asking for more money to help me erase my tracks from all this and that is why I decided to sacrifice the smaller businesses but it was too late. I didn't tell you anything so as not to involve you and so in any court of law you would be innocent. The reason why I am now telling you this is because I have decided to travel to Europe and turn myself in, I have made a power of attorney that totally disassociates me from the companies and our society. I am very sorry for this. I cannot give more details but as soon as I can I will communicate with you".
The message ended there and was deleted a couple of minutes later and Raul's phone number was eliminated and within hours they were able to confirm that he had left the country. Lucia was very anxious, she feared the worst. Fred didn't want to talk too much about it, he was very smart and was aware of all the shady and dangerous details of it. Tony didn't smile as he used to but he was the only one who had the strength to continue working as if nothing had happened.
Years went by and they never heard from Raul again, they received no notices, no unknown calls or messages, the money was not recovered but it was never lost again. Fred tried to find out as much as possible in case there were any trials throughout Europe in those months when Raul disappeared but there was no sign. Tony moved his contacts but also failed to find out anything. Lucia went on with her life and accepted that her friend was not coming back. In the end, the three friends ended the association and each one ran his own company, they had contact but there was a constant fear among them that one of them would drag the others into a decision that would lead them to oblivion.
Pasaron días 4 días sin noticias de Raúl, sabían que no se había ido del país pero no contestaba, hasta que en el quinto día, a las 8 AM, los tres recibieron un mensaje de él “Chicos. No pido que me perdonen por desaparecer, los conozco bien y sé que ya deben saber por qué esas empresas decayeron y si, fui responsable. No lo voy a negar ni pondré excusas, solo explicaré las razones de eso”. Se reunieron enseguida, cancelaron todos los compromisos pendientes solo para esperar la llamada o mensaje de Raúl que explicaría lo sucedido. Llegó la noche y estaban ya cansados de esperar, tenían mucha ansiedad y presentían lo peor hasta que de pronto llegaron varios mensajes en sus teléfonos.
“Buenas noches, mis amigos. No quería tardar tanto en escribirles, estoy seguro que me estaban esperando. Les explicaré mientras pueda hacerlo: Hace 6 meses recibí una propuesta interesante de un cliente en Europa, no les puedo decir de donde ni quién es por seguridad. Al principio parecía bien respaldada y confiable como todas las que hemos tratado y negociado. Pero luego me pidieron no hablar sobre esto con ustedes para respetar la integridad del negocio, esto era obviamente sospechoso pero lo ignoré por dejarme llevar por la curiosidad. En fin, necesitaba invertir dinero si quería proseguir, eso no era complicado para mí pero me metí en un problema muy grave y sobretodo muy peligroso. Me involucraron en negocios de mercancía ilícita y no puedo zafarme tan fácilmente. Me comenzaron a estafar pidiendo más dinero para ayudarme a borrar mis huellas de todo esto y por eso decidí sacrificar las empresas más pequeñas pero ya era muy tarde. No les dije nada para no involucrarlos y así ante cualquier corte ustedes serían inocentes. La razón por la que ahora les ando contando esto es porque he decidido viajar a Europa y entregarme, he hecho un poder que me desliga totalmente de las empresas y de nuestra sociedad. Lo lamento mucho. No puedo dar más detalles pero apenas pueda hacerlo me comunicaré con ustedes”.
El mensaje terminó ahí y fue borrado un par de minutos más tarde y el número de teléfono de Raúl fue eliminado y en horas pudieron confirmar que él había salido del país. Lucía estaba muy ansiosa, temía lo peor. Fred no quería hablar mucho del tema, él era muy inteligente y estaba consciente de todos los detalles turbios y peligrosos de eso. Tony no sonreía como solía hacerlo pero era el único que tenía las fuerzas para seguir trabajando como si nada.
Pasaron años y no volvieron a saber de Raúl, no recibieron avisos, ni llamadas ni mensajes desconocidos, el dinero no se recuperó pero no volvió a perderse más. Fred intentó averiguar todo lo posible en caso de si hubo algún juicio en toda Europa en aquellos meses cuando Raúl desapareció pero no hubo señales. Tony movió sus contactos pero tampoco logró averiguar nada. Lucía siguió su vida y aceptó que su amigo no volvería. Al final, los tres amigos terminaron la asociación y cada quien dirigía su propia empresa, tenían contacto pero entre ellos existía un constante miedo de que alguno arrastrara a los demás a una decisión que los llevara al olvido.
