Picture this….. the year is 2021. Splinterlands is the hottest blockchain-based NFT game in the world, and Djinn Oshannus is one of the most powerful cards in the game. If the Water Splinter is available, you can almost guarantee that both you and your opponent will be playing this card. With its high speed, strong magic attack, and massive health stat, Djinn Oshannus is almost unbeatable in the right circumstances. There’s just one problem…. Djinn Oshannus is insanely expensive, and you doubt you’ll ever be able to own one. However, sometimes we underestimate what is possible, and in today’s post, I want to share a memorable Splinterlands experience of getting my first Djinn Oshannus.
The Backstory
Before I jump into the story, I want to take a trip down memory lane and explain how truly impactful the Djinn Oshannus meta of 2021 was. Back then, the Water Splinter was seriously overpowered. The typical meta was to put Kelp Initiate in the first position, Djinn Oshanus in the second position, Venari Wavesmith in the third position, and use Alric Stormbringer as the Archon. The reason this lineup was so hard to beat is that it provided defense against almost everything.
For only two mana, Kelp Initiate was able to soak up a lot of damage while Djinn Oshannus and Venari Wavesmith slowly whittled away at the opponent from the back line. When Djinn Oshannus moved into the first position, its high speed helped it dodge a lot of melee and ranged attacks, and its Void ability reduced the damage it took from Magic attacks. The +2 Armor boost Djinn Oshannus got from Venari Wavesmith made it even that much stronger. Basically, Djinn Oshannus was a must-have card.
The Journey to Getting Djinn Oshannus
Although I knew I wanted Djinn Oshannus, prices during the 2021 bull market were off the charts. I can’t remember the exact figures, but this post indicated that the peak was over $60 per card at its highest. As much as I wanted Djinn Oshannus, I simply couldn’t talk myself into spending that much on a single card.
As many of you know, Splinterlands is an evolving game. The rules and meta are always changing, and that can bring opportunities to scoop up bargains. After taking a few years off from the game, I recently returned and saw that Djinn Oshannus was now less than a dollar. When I looked at my account balance and saw that I had enough DEC to purchase a copy, it was a no-brainer.
I went to the market and purchased the cheapest copy on the list. It took just a few seconds for the blockchain transition to confirm, and then VOILA! The Djinn Oshannus was finally mine!
Let’s Try it Out
Naturally, the first thing that I wanted to do after waiting almost 4 years for this card was to try it out in a match. So I hopped into a match on survival mode and was pleased to find that the Water Splinter was playable. As you can see, I played a lineup that was pretty close to the Djinn Oshannus meta from 2021.
I placed Kelp Initiate in the first position to absorb some initial attacks from my opponent. And I used Creeping Ooze in the back line to give all my friendly units a little bit of a speed boost, while also serving as a sneak defense. Of course, Furious Chicken is a simple buffer unit in the second position. I put Coral Wraith in the second-to-last position, so that it could use its sneak attack to quickly eliminate the opponent's back-line units, and I placed Venari Waitsmith in the middle of the formation for its magic attack and to give the +2 armor boost. Of course, the star of the show was Djinn Oshannus, whom I placed third. The match went exactly like I expected. My combination of strong magic attacks, high speed, and effective use of sacrificial units allowed me to quickly secure the victory.
What's Next
As this post indicated, I have waited for many years to get my very own copy of Djinn Oshannus. As excited as I am to finally have this unit in my collection, I still lack the most important ingredient of the Djinn Oshannus meta: Alric Stormbringer. Although Kelya is a great Archon to have, I think the Djinn Oshannus lineup really works best when it has the +1 magic boost from Alric. So, I think getting my own copy of Alric will be the next item on my Splinterlands shopping list.
