Splinterlands Strategy - Know the Ruleset!!! ⚔️🧙

One of the great things about Splinterlands is that the rule set is always changing. This keeps things fun, exciting, and fresh. And it also means that you can't just use the same team over and over and expect to claim victory. It's also important to adjust your team based on the rule set. In today's post, I want to share an example of how important it is to chose the right units for the ruleset.

The Battle Begins

This was a 57 Mana match with the Ferocity and Reverse Speed modifiers in play. Ferocity means that all units deal double damage if the target has taunt, and Reverse Speed means that the units with the lowest speed attack first and have the highest chance of dodging the opponent's attacks. Additionally, only the Fire, Water, and Death Splinterers were active for this match.

The Main Point

As you can see from this match, my opponent made a pretty massive tactical blunder by putting Bellowmancer in the second position. This was a 10 Mana unit that had 8 health and the taunt ability. Normally, this could be a great way to soak up some damage and protect their frontline tank. However, the Ferocity rule set meant that all of my units dealt DOUBLE damage to Bellowmancer. Before the first round was even over, this unit was knocked out of the fight. That's 10 Mana down the drain simply because the ruleset turned the Taunt ability into a massive downside. The key point here is to know the ruleset and how it will affect your units. A unit that is a powerhouse in one context can be a complete weakling in another.

The Counter Point

Although my general strategy is to tailor my lineup to make the most effective use of the rule set, there are almost always exceptions to everything. As you can see, I decided to play Mystic Scaleweaver. This unit gives the slow ability, which is traditionally a benefit because it allows your team to attack first. However, in the Reverse Speed rule set, this slow ability actually worked as a disadvantage because it made my opponent's team slower, which ironically made them faster.

At first glance, this might seem like a mistake on my part. After all, why would I want to give a buff to all of my opponent's units? I knew that playing Mystic Scale Weaver in the Reverse Speed rule set would actually give my opponent a slight advantage. However, I also knew that I was going to be playing exclusively monsters with the magic attack type. So, I wasn't worried about the increased chance of them missing their attacks. I also really wanted that 3 magic damage output from Mystic Scaleweaver. However, there is a lesson to be learned here. Sometimes a card is so powerful that it's worth using even if the ruleset puts it at a disadvantage.

Did It Work???

At the end my strategy worked. Despite giving the speed advantage to my opponent, my team were able to use their strong magic attacks to quickly eliminate the opposing units. By the end of the first round, my team had eliminated 2 of the opposing units without sustaining any casualties themselves.

At the end of the fourth round, everything was said and done, as Thandalorian Scion scored the finishing blow against my opponent's last remaining unit.
